Beyond collective intelligence: Collective adaptation.

We develop a conceptual framework for studying collective adaptation in complex socio-cognitive systems, driven by dynamic interactions of social integration strategies, social environments and problem structures. Going beyond searching for 'intelligent' collectives, we integrate research from different disciplines and outline modelling approaches that can be used to begin answering questions such as why collectives sometimes fail to reach seemingly obvious solutions, how they change their strategies and network structures in response to different problems and how we can anticipate and perhaps…

Autism spectrum disorder-like behavior caused by reduced excitatory synaptic transmission in pyramidal neurons of mouse prefrontal cortex.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is thought to result from deviation from normal development of neural circuits and synaptic function. Many genes with mutation in ASD patients have been identified. Here we report that two molecules associated with ASD susceptibility, contactin associated protein-like 2 (CNTNAP2) and Abelson helper integration site-1 (AHI1), are required for synaptic function and ASD-related behavior in mice. Knockdown of CNTNAP2 or AHI1 in layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons of the developing mouse prefrontal cortex (PFC) reduced excitatory synaptic transmission, impaired social interac

Understanding the dual role of individual position in multidimensional social support networks and depression levels: Insights from a nomination-driven framework.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the structural characteristics (e.g., single dimension friendship networks) and functional characteristics (multi-dimension) of social support networks and depressive symptoms among college students. Data were collected from 1784 students across six Chinese universities using questionnaire surveys and a nomination-based social network analysis approach. Friendship and social support networks (including four dimensions of support: appraisal, belonging, tangible, and self-esteem), were constructed to exploring relationships between network

Borderline personality disorder and social connectedness: A systematic review.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a debilitating disorder characterized by deficits in social connectedness, which is a multifaceted construct with structural (i.e., the number, diversity, or frequency of social relationships), functional (i.e., the actual or perceived resources relationships provide), and quality (i.e., the positive and negative aspects of social relationships) elements (Holt-Lunstad, 2018). However, the literature is sparse and lacks integration regarding which specific elements of social connectedness are deficient in BPD and why. This systematic review synthesized t

A "Lightweight" Support Circle: How Urban Chinese Older Adults Reconfigure Online Peripheral Ties Through Low-Cost Digital Practices.

Although peripheral ties are essential for social integration, traditional aging theories suggest that they naturally atrophy as older adults withdraw from physical social settings and prioritize intimate relationships. Digital technologies, however, offer new affordances that enable older adults to actively sustain such ties. Through six online focus groups with 32 older Chinese WeChat users (aged 55-74), this study examines how older adults manage their peripheral networks in the digital environment. Three findings emerge. First, older adults maintain a distinct typology of digital periphera…

Overcoming barriers to care for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: challenges and solutions in New Mexico and beyond.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) encompasses a range of neurodevelopmental impairments caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, affecting cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning. Despite its high prevalence, FASD remains underdiagnosed, particularly in regions like New Mexico (NM), where high rates of alcohol use, poverty, and unplanned pregnancies exacerbate the burden of the disorder. Individuals with FASD often face significant challenges in adaptive functioning, education, and social integration, with many experiencing adverse childhood events that compound developmental difficulti…

Brain-Wide Synaptic Inputs to Aromatase-Expressing Neurons in the Medial Amygdala Suggest Complex Circuitry for Modulating Social Behavior.

Here, we reveal an unbiased view of the brain regions that provide specific inputs to aromatase-expressing cells in the medial amygdala, neurons that play an outsized role in the production of sex-specific social behaviors, using rabies tracing and light sheet microscopy. While the downstream projections from these cells are known, the specific inputs to the aromatase-expressing cells in the medial amygdala remained unknown. We observed established connections to the medial amygdala (e.g., bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and accessory olfactory bulb) indicating that aromatase neurons are a

Empathy in electrodermal responsive and nonresponsive patients with schizophrenia.

Skin conductance response (SCR) to emotion-evoking stimuli has in previous studies suggested the existence of two subgroups of schizophrenia patients. One is characterized by absent SCR and the other by heightened or non-habituating SCR. These subgroups have also been shown to differ in symptoms, prognosis and social integration. The present project compared social cognition in the two subgroups. SCR from 28 patients with schizophrenia and 24 matched healthy controls was measured while they watched emotion-evoking and neutral video tapes. Assessments of symptoms, neurocognition, social cogniti…

Sexuality in subjects with intellectual disability: an educational intervention proposal for parents and counselors in developing countries.

In developing countries, the study of intellectual disability has enormous knowledge gaps, especially in the areas of intervention, utilization of services and legislation. This article provides information not only for aiding in the potential development of sexuality in individuals with intellectual disability, but also for fostering their social integration. In Mexico and the region, in order to develop educational interventions for promoting sexual health, it is necessary to consider the following priorities: a) mental health professionals should have the knowledge or receive training for c…

The Association Between the Occurrence of Sensory Integration Disorders, Depression, and Chronic Fatigue in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.

Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease associated not only with motor dysfunction but also with non-motor symptoms such as depression and MS-related fatigue (MSRF). Sensory integration disorders (SID) in MS remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the association between SID and depression, MSRF, disability level, disease duration, and disease activity in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Methods: A total of 205 patients with RRMS were assessed using the Daniel Travis sensory integration questionnaire, Beck Depression Invent

The patient costs of care for those with TB and HIV: a cross-sectional study from South Africa.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the post-diagnosis care-seeking costs incurred by people living with TB and/or HIV and their households, in order to identify the potential benefits of integrated care. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 454 participants with TB or HIV or both in public primary health care clinics in Ekurhuleni North Sub-District, South Africa. We collected information on visits to health facilities, direct and indirect costs for participants and for their guardians and caregivers. We define 'integration' as receipt of both TB and HIV services at the same facil

How to improve outbreak response: a case study of integrated outbreak analytics from Ebola in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The emerging field of outbreak analytics calls attention to the need for data from multiple sources to inform evidence-based decision making in managing infectious diseases outbreaks. To date, these approaches have not systematically integrated evidence from social and behavioural sciences. During the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, an innovative solution to systematic and timely generation of integrated and actionable social science evidence emerged in the form of the Cellulle d'Analyse en Sciences Sociales (Social Sciences Analytics Cell) (CASS), a socia

Adding insult to injury: neural sensitivity to social exclusion is associated with internalizing symptoms in chronically peer-victimized girls.

Despite evidence documenting activation of the social pain network in response to social rejection and its link to temporary distress, far less is known regarding its role in pervasive emotional difficulties. Moreover, research has not considered the intersection between neural activation to experimentally induced social exclusion and naturally occurring social adversity. This study examined an integrated social pain model of internalizing symptoms, which posits that (i) neural sensitivity in the social pain network is associated with internalizing symptoms, (ii) this linkage is more robust in

Harm reduction--from a conceptual framework to practical experience: the example of Germany.

Drug demand reduction programs must be integrated into a comprehensive strategy aiming at preventing drug misuse, facilitating access to counseling, to treatment of dependence, and to rehabilitation; and establishing effective measures to reduce the adverse health and social consequences of drug misuse. The continuous and even rising spread of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases (e.g., hepatitis B and C) among injecting drug users is alarming. Although, in many countries the prevalence of HIV infections is decreasing due to the implementation of effective harm reduction measures, such as sy

The mediation of resilience between physical activity, parenting style, and social anxiety among Chinese adolescents: evidence from a structural equation model.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent social anxiety is a common mental health problem. Although physical activity and parenting style have both been linked to anxiety, their joint associations with social anxiety and the mediating role of resilience remain unclear. This study tested an integrated model of physical activity, parenting style, resilience, and social anxiety in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A total of 1,094 adolescents completed measures of physical activity, parenting style, resilience, and social anxiety. Structural equation modelling was used to examine direct and indirect associations amon

[The abuse and dependence of chemical agents in an evolutionary approach/From adaptation to the phenomenon of "run-away" and beyond].

A recent paradigm shift in medicine resulted in the emergence of so-called evolutionary medicine, which studies the interactions between the environment and biological phenomena in a timeline to understand diseases and develop new treatments. In the course of evolutionary discussion of chemical substance abuse, the issue was approached through five steps. The biological level helps to understand the interference and coevolution of chemical agents and biochemical mechanisms, thus demonstrating the vulnerability toward chemical agents. The psychological level approaches behavior and its change,
