Investigating the role of interpersonal relationships on low-income SUD patients' recovery: a qualitative analysis of various stakeholders in New York State.

BACKGROUND: While positive impacts of recovery capital and social capital in facilitating substance use disorder (SUD) recovery is increasingly documented, research has shown that low-income and marginalized individuals have lower social capital and may rely on different networks. A more comprehensive approach is needed to understand the social capital of low-income individuals with SUD and how these relationships impact their treatment and recovery. METHODS: Qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed employing thematic analysis. Participants included indiv

Unravelling the impact of frontal lobe impairment for social dysfunction in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 is an autosomal dominant multisystemic disorder affecting muscular and extra muscular systems, including the central nervous system. Cerebral involvement in myotonic dystrophy type 1 is associated with subtle cognitive and behavioural disorders, of major impact on socio-professional adaptation. The social dysfunction and its potential relation to frontal lobe neuropsychology remain under-evaluated in this pathology. The neuroanatomical network underpinning that disorder is yet to disentangle. Twenty-eight myotonic dystrophy type 1 adult patients (mean age: 46 years ol

Co-creating community support strategies for chronic disease management: insights from our experience with two community groups in southern Quito, Ecuador.

Social support plays an important role in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), yet health promotion strategies often focus on individual behavior change while overlooking community structures that sustain supportive environments and facilitate adherence to healthy behaviors. Participatory approaches can help identify locally grounded strategies to strengthen community support networks for chronic disease management. This study aimed to co-create community-based strategies to strengthen social support networks for T2DM management. Between March and September 2024, we conducted a participat

Young adults' sourcing and supply of opioids in a changing drug market.

BACKGROUND: In Denmark, rising concern over young people's non-prescribed use of opioids such as tramadol and oxycodone has fueled media narratives invoking predatory suppliers and vulnerable youth, with a key emphasis on kiosks and social media as venues that make opioids immediately accessible to young people. To inform effective policy responses, more nuanced, empirically grounded understandings of youth opioid sourcing are needed. METHODS: The article draws on qualitative data from a Danish study on non-prescribed use of tramadol and oxycodone among treatment-enrolled young adults and sta

Social and economic factors associated with recent and lifetime incarceration among Puerto Rican drug users.

Using a sample of 280 Puerto Rican drug users with a history of incarceration residing in Massachusetts, we explore whether a significant association exists between social and economic factors (maintaining social network contacts, receiving public assistance) and lifetime incarceration. Analysis of survey data using regression methods shows that respondents who live in their own home, receive public assistance, and have recent familial contact are significantly less likely to have been incarcerated in the past 6 months. Among study participants, men and those who initiated heroin use at younge

The relationship between pain intensity and severity and depression in older people: exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Pain and depression are known to be associated in later life, and both have a negative effect on physical performance both separately and in combination. The nature of the relationships between pain intensity and depression in elderly persons experiencing pain is less clear. The objectives of this study were to explore which factors are associated with depressed mood in older people experiencing pain, and to test the hypothesis that older people experiencing pain are at risk of depressed mood according to the severity or frequency of their pain. In addition we explored whether othe

Brain networks of happiness: dynamic functional connectivity among the default, cognitive and salience networks relates to subjective well-being.

Subjective well-being (SWB) reflects the cognitive and emotional evaluations of an individual's life and plays an important role in individual's success in health, work and social relationships. Although previous studies have revealed the spontaneous brain activity underlying SWB, little is known about the relationship between brain network interactions and SWB. The present study investigated the static and dynamic functional connectivity among large-scale brain networks during resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in relation to SWB in two large independent datasets. The

Network Approaches to Substance Use and HIV/Hepatitis C Risk among Homeless Youth and Adult Women in the United States: A Review.

During the United States economic recession of 2008-2011, the number of homeless and unstably housed people in the United States increased considerably. Homeless adult women and unaccompanied homeless youth make up the most marginal segments of this population. Because homeless individuals are a hard to reach population, research into these marginal groups has traditionally been a challenge for researchers interested in substance abuse and mental health. Network analysis techniques and research strategies offer means for dealing with traditional challenges such as missing sampling frames, vari

Trust as a Driver of Pro-Ecological Behaviour: The Power of Experts and Interpersonal Networks in a Low-Trust Context.

Understanding the role of trust in shaping pro-ecological behaviour is essential for advancing effective environmental communication, particularly in societies characterized by low institutional credibility. This study examines how different forms of trust-scientific, institutional, mediatic, and interpersonal-predict pro-ecological behaviour in Bulgaria, a context marked by historically low levels of social and institutional trust. Drawing on a nationally representative survey of 1008 adults, participants rated their trust in six sources of environmental information (experts, public servants,

Cognitive and Interpersonal Factors in Adolescent Inpatients with Anorexia Nervosa: A Network Analysis.

The cognitive-interpersonal model of anorexia nervosa (AN) posits that cognitive and interpersonal traits contribute to the development and maintenance of AN. We investigated cognitive and interpersonal factors put forward by the model in a sample of 145 adolescent inpatients with AN using network analysis. Our main outcomes included core eating disorder symptoms, cognitive style, socio-affective factors, and mood symptoms. We estimated a cross-sectional network using graphical LASSO. Core and bridge symptoms were identified using strength centrality. Goldbricker was used to reduce topological

Network-level HIV risk norms are associated with individual-level HIV risk and harm reduction behaviors among people who inject drugs: a latent profile analysis.

The COVID-19 related U.S.-Mexico border-crossing restrictions disrupted social networks and HIV harm reduction services among people who inject drugs (PWID) in San Diego and Tijuana. We assessed associations of descriptive network norms on PWID's HIV vulnerability during this period. Between 10/2020 and 10/2021, 399 PWID completed a behavioral and egocentric questionnaire. We used Latent Profile Analysis to categorize PWID into network norm risk profiles based on proportions of their network (n = 924 drug use alters) who injected drugs and engaged in cross-border drug use (CBDU), among other v

Getting to know you: general and specific neural computations for learning about people.

Learning about other peoples' attributes, e.g. whether an individual is generous or selfish, is central to human social cognition. It is well documented that a network of cortical regions is reliably activated when we engage social processes. However, little is known about the specific computations performed by these regions or whether such processing is specialized for the social domain. We investigated these questions using a task in which participants (N= 26) learned about four peoples' generosity by watching them choose to share money with third party partners, or not. In a non-social cont

Theory of Mind Skills Are Related to Resting-State Frontolimbic Connectivity in Schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia (SCH) often demonstrate impairment in social-cognitive functions as well as disturbances in large-scale network connectivity. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is a core region of the default mode network, with projections to limbic structures. It plays an important role in social and emotional decision-making. We investigated whether resting-state functional connectivity (FC) relates to the cognitive and affective domains of theory of mind (ToM). Twenty-three SCH patients and 19 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance i
