Social exclusion, health and hidden homelessness.

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness and poverty are extreme forms of social exclusion which extend beyond the lack of physical or material needs. The purpose of this study was to explore and expand the concept of social exclusion within the social determinants of health perspective - to understand how the social environment, health behaviours and health status are associated with material and social deprivation. STUDY DESIGN: Fundamental qualitative description with tones of focused ethnography. METHODS: Participants who identified as hidden homeless described their everyday living conditions and how t

Estradiol regulates L-type calcium channel-dependent social behavior deficits during cocaine abstinence in female rats.

Social withdrawal during cocaine abstinence is a significant predictor of relapse, yet the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying this vulnerability remain poorly understood, particularly in females. Estradiol, a potent neuromodulator of mesocorticolimbic circuitry, regulates dopamine-dependent processes that encode social motivation. L-type calcium channels (LTCCs) similarly regulate neuronal excitability and plasticity in corticolimbic regions implicated in addiction and affective regulation, and estradiol interacts with LTCC signaling through both membrane-initiated and transcriptional mechan

The Effect of Visual Perceptual Load on Auditory Awareness of Social vs. Non-social Stimuli in Individuals with Autism.

This study examined the effect of increasing visual perceptual load on auditory awareness for social and non-social stimuli in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n = 63) and typically developing (TD, n = 62) adolescents. Using an inattentional deafness paradigm, a socially meaningful ('Hi') or a non-social (neutral tone) critical stimulus (CS) was unexpectedly presented under high and low load. For the social CS both groups continued to show high awareness rates as load increased. Awareness rates for the non-social stimulus were reduced when load increased for the TD, but not the

Factors Associated With Reports to Child Protective Services Following Unintentional Ingestions in Children Younger Than Age 6.

OBJECTIVE: Unintentional ingestions in children are a common presenting chief complaint in the emergency department (ED). The decision to consult social work or report to Child Protective Services (CPS) relies on the provider's discretion. We sought to investigate the association between race or insurance status and providers' decisions. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study of children younger than 6 years of age presenting to 1 of 6 hospitals within the Yale New Haven Health system in 2013 to 2021 with an ICD-9/10 code of poisoning or accidental ingestion. Multivariable logistic re

The dynamic buffering of social support on depressive symptoms and cancer worries in patients seeking cancer genetic counseling.

PURPOSE: Social support is a crucial protective factor against psychological concerns in patients with cancer. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the differential impacts of social support on cancer worries and depressive symptoms in patients undergoing genetic counseling for hereditary cancer. The current study utilized a high-volume database from a multi-site cancer genetics clinic to assess the impact of perceived social support on depressive symptoms and cancer worries among patients of different age groups (young versus older patients) and diagnosis status (diagnosed survivors

Maternal education and adolescent drug use: a longitudinal analysis of causation and selection over a generation.

Current evidence indicates that in the USA illegal drug use among adolescents between the 1980s and 1990s became significantly more prevalent in families with lower maternal education in comparison to families with higher maternal education. In this study, we examine whether this inter-generational change results from either (a) a changing influence of socioeconomic status on drug use, as predicted by the inter-generational social 'causation' hypothesis, or (b) a negative influence of drug use on socioeconomic status, as predicted by the inter-generational social 'selection/drift' hypothesis.

Social support during pregnancy and the risk of postpartum depression in Polish women: A prospective study.

Social support has been proposed as an important determinant of women's physical and emotional well-being during pregnancy and after childbirth. Our study aimed to examine the association between the risk of postpartum depression (PPD) and perceived social support during pregnancy. A web-based prospective study survey was conducted among Polish women. The level of social support was measured with the Berlin Social Support Scales during pregnancy. Four weeks after the birth the risk of PPD was assessed using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale. Data from 932 mothers aged 19-43 (mean 30.95

Spatial associations between social groups and ozone air pollution exposure in the Beijing urban area.

Few studies have linked social factors to air pollution exposure in China. Unlike the race or minority concepts in western countries, the Hukou system (residential registration system) is a fundamental reason for the existence of social deprivation in China. To assess the differences in ozone (O3) exposure among social groups, especially groups divided by Hukou status, we assigned estimates of O3 exposure to the latest census data of the Beijing urban area using a kriging interpolation model. We developed simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) models that account for spatial autocorrelation to iden

Psychosocial Distress in Patients With Advanced CKD by Racial Group and Immigrant Status: A Canadian Cross-sectional Study.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been reported to experience profound psychosocial distress. Other work has established that patients with CKD from marginalized populations (including individuals who on the basis of race often face racism and related discrimination, termed "racialization") experience health care inequities. Given limited information on the intersection of these 2 phenomena, we assessed the association of psychosocial distress with racialized status and immigrant status in Canadians with advanced CKD. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analy

Contributions of the posterior cerebellum to mentalizing and social functioning: A transdiagnostic investigation.

BACKGROUND: Mentalizing-our ability to make inferences about the mental states of others-is impaired across psychiatric disorders and robustly associated with functional outcomes. Mentalizing deficits have been prominently linked to aberrant activity in cortical regions considered to be part of the "social brain network" (e.g., dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction), yet emerging evidence also suggests the importance of cerebellar dysfunction. In the present study-using a transdiagnostic, clinical psychiatric sample spanning the psychosis-autism-social anxiety spectrums-we ex

Understanding suicide in sexual minority youth: neural reactivity to social cues as a moderating influence.

Sexual minority youth (SMY) experience heightened suicide risk, partly because of stigma surrounding sexual orientation identity. Neurobiological characteristics can influence reactivity to social cues (e.g., perceived liking or rejection) and suicide risk. These effects are exacerbated during adolescence-a developmental period of heightened sensitivity to social contexts. In this cross-sectional study of youth at varying psychiatric risk, we examined whether neural reactivity to social cues moderated the link between sexual minority status and suicidal ideation (SI) and whether sexual orienta
