Glocalizing medical education through community clinical experiences: a model for socially accountable preclinical, community-based training.

Calls for "glocalization" in health professions education reflect growing expectations that global educational standards are meaningfully aligned with local priorities, in keeping with social accountability principles and shared values of relevance, equity, quality and cost-effectiveness. At the same time, increasing attention to the role of social determinants in shaping health outcomes challenges medical institutions to prepare practice-ready physicians who are culturally responsive and well-equipped to deliver holistic, patient-centered care. Scalable models that translate these priorities

A localized tracing technique to explore intra-amygdala functional and structural correlates of individual variability in behavioral response.

INTRODUCTION: The neurobiological basis for individual variability in behavioral responses to stimuli remains poorly understood. Probing the neural substrates that underlie individual variability in stress responses may open the door for preventive approaches that use biological markers to identify at-risk populations. New developments of viral neuronal tracing tools have led to a recent increase in studies on long range circuits and their functional role in stress responses and social behavior. While these studies are necessary to untangle largescale connectivity, most social behaviors are me

Evaluation of social cognitive measures in an Asian schizophrenia sample.

BACKGROUND: Converging evidence has indicated that deficits in social cognition may manifest as poor functioning; therefore, social cognition has emerged as an important research area and treatment target. However, few studies have examined the psychometrics of multiple social cognition measures in an Asian population. This study aims to evaluate the psychometrics of measures indexing the four core social cognition domains. METHODS: Schizophrenia outpatients (n = 116) and healthy controls (n = 73) completed a battery of nine social cognitive measures, twice, four weeks apart. Psychometric pro

The compounding burden of disability in Mexico: social protection gaps, chronic disease excess, and prospective mortality from national open data sources.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities (PWD) face disproportionate barriers to social protection and healthcare worldwide, yet comprehensive multi-source evidence linking social security coverage, morbidity, and mortality outcomes remains scarce in Latin America. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, multi-source population-based study with a prospective cohort component, integrating nine nationally representative Mexican data sources (2017-2023) encompassing over 125 million persons. Disability was operationalized using source-specific measures, including Washington Group-based instruments

Development and validation of the Social Emotional Assets (SEA) scale: a culturally responsive measure of social-emotional competencies in emerging adulthood.

Social emotional competencies in children and youth are associated with academic and psychological wellbeing. However, application to post-secondary students has been limited, and measures have been centered on the white, middle-class experience. Emerging adulthood is a time of heightened emotionality, instability, and relationship vulnerability. Therefore, the development of social emotion competences in post-secondary students could promote healthy self-regulatory and interpersonal skills. The aim of this work was to develop a culturally sensitive measure of social and emotional competencies

Perceived social support among depressed elderly, middle-aged, and young-adult samples: cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have concluded that the perceived quality of support is more strongly associated with mental health than with the actual structure of personal networks. This study examined clinical, historical, and phenomenological variables associated cross-sectionally and longitudinally with perceived social support. METHODS: Participants included elderly, middle-aged, and young-adult depressed samples derived from the Duke Clinical Research Center for the Study of Depression in Late Life. RESULTS: Cross-sectional multivariate analyses revealed that perceived social support

Disentangling Loneliness, Depression, and Social Media Use: A Gaussian, Mixed, and Bayesian Network Approach in the EU Loneliness Study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness, depression, and social media use (SMU) are increasingly interconnected phenomena in modern mental health research. While prior studies have demonstrated associations between these domains, their mutual dynamics and directional relationships remain unclear. Traditional analytical approaches often treat these constructs as unitary, failing to capture the complexity of symptom-level interactions. AIMS: This study aimed to disentangle the relationships between loneliness, depression, and SMU by applying advanced network modeling approaches to a large and representative Eur

Integrating the In-Laws: Class and Kin Support Within Marriage in Urban Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares affinal kin relationships in low-income and higher-income families in Nairobi, Kenya. BACKGROUND: In most studies of kinship structure and relationships in sub-Saharan Africa, culture serves as the basis upon which norms and expectations of kin are differentiated. While important, within the context of increasing economic inequality, it may be that marriage and kinship expectations and practices are also increasingly differentiated by social class, reflecting increasing social stratification in family formation and organization. METHOD: Narrative and thematic a

Countering the forgetting of novel health information with 'social boosting'.

The prevalence of misleading information, especially with respect to health care practices, poses a threat. While studies have shown the effectiveness of various intervention techniques in mitigating the adverse effects of low-quality or false information, the effectiveness of such interventions can decay. Here, we investigate the role of the detailed social structure within which the intervened individuals live, which provides opportunities for the individuals to discuss and internalize new knowledge. We evaluated this with respect to information about maternal and child health care, delivere…

The Moderating Role of Social Capital Between Parenting Stress and Mental Health and Well-Being Among Working Mothers in China.

UNLABELLED: Rapid economic growth has transformed social and family structure globally, including in China, over the past few decades. With women's engagement in the workforce, the dual demand of paid and domestic work has become a major source of stress, particularly among mothers. Working mothers face unique challenges of family obligations blended with contemporary values of women's career aspirations. METHODS: This study recruited 189 participants. This study employed quantitative methods to investigate the relationship between parenting stress and mental health, and the moderating role o

Network indicators of cultural resilience to anthropogenic removals in animal societies.

Social learning, information transmission and culture play vital roles in the lives of social animals, influencing their survival, reproduction and ability to adapt to changing environments. However, the effect of anthropogenic disturbances on these processes is poorly understood in free-living animals. To investigate the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on social learning and information transmission, we simulated individual removal from contact networks derived from long-term behavioural datasets. We simulate the effects of individual removal on network efficiency and social learning for

Functional and microstructural plasticity following social and interoceptive mental training.

The human brain supports social cognitive functions, including Theory of Mind, empathy, and compassion, through its intrinsic hierarchical organization. However, it remains unclear how the learning and refinement of social skills shapes brain function and structure. We studied if different types of social mental training induce changes in cortical function and microstructure, investigating 332 healthy adults (197 women, 20-55 years) with repeated multimodal neuroimaging and behavioral testing. Our neuroimaging approach examined longitudinal changes in cortical functional gradients and myelin-s

Spatial associations between social groups and ozone air pollution exposure in the Beijing urban area.

Few studies have linked social factors to air pollution exposure in China. Unlike the race or minority concepts in western countries, the Hukou system (residential registration system) is a fundamental reason for the existence of social deprivation in China. To assess the differences in ozone (O3) exposure among social groups, especially groups divided by Hukou status, we assigned estimates of O3 exposure to the latest census data of the Beijing urban area using a kriging interpolation model. We developed simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) models that account for spatial autocorrelation to iden

[Poverty, social exclusion, social capital and health].

Social capital is the social structure which facilitates the actions of individuals, stimulates production and allows for success. Poverty maintains basic needs unmet (food, health, autonomy) over time and unvoluntarily. Social exclusion does not allow individuals to participate in society. The following dimensions are assessed: financial poverty, social inclusion, employment, health and education. Social participation, work integration, empowerment, self-esteem, and personal achievement should be promoted. In Europe 15% of people is exposed to poverty; in Spain corresponding figures are 13.4%…
