Na-K ATPase of healthy leucocytes is relatively low (109 +/- 20 nmol . mg-1 . h-1), as is the permeability of the plasma membrane to cations. In this study of leucocytes from leukaemic patients, the Na-K ATPase was increased. There was an associated increase in membrane permeability to sodium and calcium. In one patient, this led to a clinically dangerous and spurious suggestion of hyperkalaemia. It is suggested that some leukaemic conditions may be associated with 'leaky' membranes.

Collapse of the anterior chamber, choroidal and ciliary body detachments and ocular hypotony developed without explanation 2 weeks after uneventful intracapsular cataract extraction in a 60-year-old woman. Following an unsuccessful attempt to maintain an adequate chamber depth with air, sodium hyaluronate was injected into the chamber after surgical drainage of suprachoroidal fluid, allowing for spontaneous recovery of aqueous production while protecting the anterior segment from the ravages of chamber collapse.

The solubility of phenytoin sodium injection of two manufacturer's was studied in three intravenous fluids, 0.9% sodium chloride, lactated Ringer's, and four manufacturers 5% dextrose injections. This manifestation of gold toxicity has only recently been recognized. The temporal relationship to the introduction of gold therapy, an exacerbation following further gold injection in one patient, the resolution which followed gold withdrawal and the associated manifestation of gold toxicity in two patients favored a diagnosis of gold-induced pulmonary disease.

This study was designed to ascertain the most effective sodium solution for resuscitation after potentially fatal thermal injury. Solutions containing from 75 to 300 mEq/L of sodium were administered in various doses to mice subjected to a standarized scald. Two patients with sickle cell disease who had been maintained on sodium cyanante therapy for periods of 440 and 600 days on dosages up to 44 and 41 mg/kg per day developed a motor and sensory neuropathy. IgE synthesis requires IL-4 and a T cell-B cell interaction that involves the B-cell antigen CD40 and its ligand expressed on activated T cells. Nedocromil sodium (NS), an effective prophylactic agent in asthma, inhibits IgE synthesis by human B cells. In this report we examined the mechanisms of this inhibition. Sodium supplementation was done on 41 very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants with 25 other infants of similar weight status as controls.
