The potential impact of Octopus cyanea extracts to improve eggplant resistance against Fusarium-wilt disease: in vivo and in vitro studies.

The novelty of the present research is conducting a new method in the systemic resistance of plant diseases by using distinct marine extracts. The ability of two octopus extracts to reduce the wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum was observed. The applied methods are soaked roots (SR) and foliar shoots (FS). The antioxidant enzyme activities, percent disease index (PDI), and growth parameters were measured. In vitro antifungal potential of the octopus extracts against F. oxysporum was examined. The obtained result shows that SR extracts reduced PDI. Additionally, all the tested treatments

Adventitious root formation in crops-Potato as an example.

The root system of potato is made up of adventitious roots (AR) that form at the base of a sprout once it emerges from the mother tuber. By definition, AR originate from dormant preformed meristems, or from cells neighboring vascular tissues in stems or leaves. This may occur as part of the developmental program of the plant (e.g., potato), or when replacing the embryonic primary roots in response to stress conditions, such as flooding, nutrient deprivation, or wounding. AR formation is studied mainly in cereals and model plants, and less is known about its developmental program in root and tu

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) nutrient and lead uptake affected by zeolite and DTPA in a lead-polluted soil.

Development of alleviation strategies, which enhance plant growth under heavy metal stress, is important. Inorganic (zeolite) and organic (diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid, DTPA) amendments affecting the alleviation of lead (Pb) stress in a calcareous soil were tested by investigating leaf nutrient uptake of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) plants. Experimental quantities of lead (Pb) at 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg·kg-1 soil, zeolite (clinoptilolite) at 0%, 0.5% and 1%, and DTPA at 0, 50 and 100 mg·kg-1 soil were tested in a factorial experiment with three plant replicates. According to the

Phenotypic and genetic characterization of tomato mutants provides new insights into leaf development and its relationship to agronomic traits.

BACKGROUND: Tomato mutants altered in leaf morphology are usually identified in the greenhouse, which demands considerable time and space and can only be performed in adequate periods. For a faster but equally reliable scrutiny method we addressed the screening in vitro of 971 T-DNA lines. Leaf development was evaluated in vitro in seedlings and shoot-derived axenic plants. New mutants were characterized in the greenhouse to establish the relationship between in vitro and in vivo leaf morphology, and to shed light on possible links between leaf development and agronomic traits, a promising fie

Pretreatment of different food rest materials for bioconversion into fungal lipid-rich biomass.

Food rest materials have the potential to be used as media components in various types of fermentations. Oleaginous filamentous fungi can utilize those components and generate a high-value lipid-rich biomass, which could be further used for animal and human use. One of the main limitations in this process is the pretreatment of food rest materials, needed to provide homogenization, sterilization and solubilization. In this study, two pretreatment processes-steam explosion and enzymatic hydrolysis-were evaluated for potato and animal protein-rich food rest materials. The pretreated food rest ma

Properties of potato starch treated with microwave radiation and enriched with mineral additives.

The paper discusses how microwave radiation and mineral additives affect selected physical and chemical properties of potato starch. Potato starch was irradiated with microwaves of 440 W or 800 W and then enriched with ions of potassium, magnesium, copper, or iron. Atomic absorption spectroscopy showed an effective incorporation of ions, while mineral saturation depended on both the microwave radiation density and the element being introduced. The data obtained prove that the microwave radiation and saturation with minerals affect the rheology and thermal characteristics of the samples under e

Effects of simultaneous UV-C radiation and ultrasonic energy postharvest treatment on bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of tomatoes during storage.

The effects of a novel technology utilizing a simultaneous combination of Ultraviolet-C radiation and ultrasound energy postharvest treatment on tomato bioactive compounds during 28 days' storage period was investigated by varying Ultraviolet-C radiation intensities of 639.37 or 897.16 µW/cm2 at a constant ultrasound intensity of 13.87 W/L from a 40 kHz-1 kW transducer. A minimal treatment time of 240 s at Ultraviolet-C dosage of 2.15 kJ/m2 was observed to provoke a considerable increase in bioactive compounds content, proportionated to treatment time. Although treatment led to temperature inc

Hydrogen peroxide is involved in hydrogen sulfide-induced lateral root formation in tomato seedlings.

BACKGROUND: Both hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are separately regarded as a highly reactive molecule involved in root morphogenesis. In this report, corresponding causal link governing lateral root formation was investigated. METHODS: By using pharmacological, anatomic, and molecular approaches, evidence presented here revealed the molecular mechanism underlying tomato lateral root development triggered by H2S. RESULTS: A H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) triggered the accumulation of H2O2, the up-regulation of RBOH1 transcript, and thereafter tomato lateral root for

A sequential binomial sampling plan for potato psyllid (Hemiptera: Triozidae) on bell pepper (Capsicum annum).

BACKGROUND: Potato psyllids (Bactericera cockerelli Sulc) are a pest on solanaceous crop plants, including bell peppers. Potato psyllids vector Candidatus Liberibacter psyllaurous, but bell peppers (Capsicum annum L.) do not exhibit symptoms from infection. Potato psyllids show variation in spatial patterns and host choice with cultivar and plant species. Consequently, a study of spatial distribution and sampling plan specific to bell peppers is necessary for management of this insect pest, as those developed for other crops are unlikely to transfer among crops. RESULTS: Potato psyllids were

The potato suberin feruloyl transferase FHT which accumulates in the phellogen is induced by wounding and regulated by abscisic and salicylic acids.

The present study provides new insights on the role of the potato (Solanum tuberosum) suberin feruloyl transferase FHT in native and wound tissues, leading to conclusions about hitherto unknown properties of the phellogen. In agreement with the enzymatic role of FHT, it is shown that its transcriptional activation and protein accumulation are specific to tissues that undergo suberization such as the root boundary layers of the exodermis and the endodermis, along with the tuber periderm. Remarkably, FHT expression and protein accumulation within the periderm is restricted to the phellogen deriv…

Mathematical modeling of laser based potato cutting and peeling.

A mathematical model is developed and validated to predict the depth of cut in potato tuber slabs as a function of laser power and travel speed. The model considers laser processing parameters such as input power, spot size and exposure time as well as the properties of the material being cut such as specific heat, thermal conductivity, surface reflectance, etc. The model also considers the phase change of water in potato and the ignition temperature of the solid portion. The composition of the potato tuber is assumed to be of water and solid. The model also assumes that the ablation process i

Thermal priming enhances yield after recurrent heat stress and involves SlHSFA2-SlERFs in the regulation of transcriptional thermal memory in tomato.

Heat stress (HS) severely limits plant growth and productivity, threatening agriculture and food security. Plants cope with recurrent HS through adaptive thermal memory, which allows them to retain a memory of prior moderate priming stress. However, while this process has been well studied in Arabidopsis thaliana, it remains unclear whether the same molecular mechanisms operate in horticultural crops such as tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Here, we show that tomato plants display a longer thermal memory capacity than Arabidopsis. We found that thermal priming followed by recurrent HS enhanced y…

Tobacco Rattle Virus Coat Protein Targets Ferredoxin 1 for Degradation.

Plant virus infections commonly inhibit leaf photosynthesis, leading to characteristic symptoms such as chlorosis. However, whether a conser … plant, is also recognised by TRV CP, suggesting an ancient origin of this interaction. In addition, Solanum lycopersicum Fd1 interacts with TRV CP, and its overexpression suppresses TRV-GFP infection, supporting a defensive role. Together, these findings show that TRV CP targets Fd1 to impair host photosynthesis and promote symptom development, whereas hi …

A novel pyrimidine-guanidine derivative YYH-6 confers tomato resistance to TYLCV via multitarget regulation of host defense genes and proteins.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) poses a serious threat to global tomato production. Current management strategies remain limited, highlighting the need for novel antiviral agents. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of a newly synthesized pyrimidine-guanidine derivative, YYH-6, against TYLCV in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom) and investigated its underlying mechanisms. Foliar application of YYH-6 significantly reduced viral accumulation and alleviated disease symptoms. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that YYH-6 treatment upregulates defense-related pathways such as plan…

Unraveling the Intertwined Networks of Potato Tuberization: From Epitranscriptomic Signaling to Metabolic Reprogramming.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuberization is a complex developmental transition in which a subterranean stolon is converted into a starch-accumulating tuber. This process is governed by long-distance systemic signals, local hormonal dynamics, and extensive metabolic reprogramming. Recent advances have extended our understanding beyond the classical photoperiodic model, revealing the importance of chromatin remodeling, mRNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) epitranscriptomic modifications, and a developmentally regulated shift in phloem unloading pathways. Here, we synthesize these multilayered regulat…

Trichome acylsugar defenses are equally effective against leaf-mining and free-living insects.

Trichomes, epidermal projections, are crucial components of plant defense systems. Whether these epidermal defenses are effective against leafminers, which infest the internal mesophyll layers, remains unclear. Using the devastating invasive tomato pest, Phthorimaea absoluta (tomato leafminer), and the trichome-rich wild tomato, Solanum pennellii, we demonstrate that trichome-produced acylsugars effectively inhibit the growth of endophagous P. absoluta larvae feeding inside leaves. High-spatial-resolution leaf- and frass-metabolite analysis by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass s…

S-nitrosylation of GSNOR and LCD facilitates cadmium-induced programmed cell death in tomato seedlings.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) perform multiple regulatory functions in plants; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying NO and H2S interaction remain poorly understood. In this study, we aim to analyse the function of S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) and L-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD) in the programmed cell death (PCD) response to cadmium (Cd2+) stress using GSNOR and LCD knockout and overexpressing transgenic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Our results confirmed that GSNOR, an enzyme that mediates NO dynamic equilibrium, and LCD, an enzyme involved in H2S generation, …

A Pollen Carbonic Anhydrase Promotes Male Fertility Under Elevated Carbon Dioxide in Tomato.

Rising atmospheric CO2 is a defining feature of climate change and profoundly influences plant growth and productivity. While the effects of elevated CO2 on photosynthesis and vegetative biomass have been extensively studied, its direct impact on male reproductive development remains poorly understood. Here, we show that elevated CO2 improves pollen vigour and performance in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Through genetic and molecular analyses, we identify β-type carbonic anhydrase 2 (βCA2) as a pollen-enriched CO2 sensor required for this response. Loss of βCA2 abolishes the promoting effects…

Balancing tuber vitamin C improvement with trade-off side effect by fine-tuning regulation of StGGPs.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a globally important staple crop. Improving its nutritional quality without compromising yield-a classic manifestation of the growth-defense trade-off-remains a major challenge in modern agriculture. Traditional breeding in potato is hindered by its highly heterozygous genome and tetrasomic inheritance, making it difficult and time-consuming to introduce and fix new traits. To address this, we applied a gene-editing approach to enhance vitamin C (Vc) content in tubers by mutating the upstream open reading frames of two potato GDP-l-galactose phosphorylase genes…
