[Taxonomy of anxiety disorders in comparison of ICD‑10 and ICD‑11. German version].

With the introduction of the 11th revision of the World Health Organization International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), structural and content-related adjustments to the diagnostic guidelines for anxiety disorders were made, which are presented in this review article. Previously classified as "phobic disorders" and "other anxiety disorders" within the group "neurotic, stress-related, and somatoform disorders", in ICD-11 "anxiety- or fear-related disorders" now constitute a separate group. The core diagnoses of agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder,…

Social support profiles and their association with sociodemographic and mental health characteristics among treatment-seeking adults in Arabic-speaking countries.

High prevalences of mental disorders have been found among people from Arabic-speaking countries. Perceived social support has often been identified as a significant factor in the development of mental disorders, and the social environment is especially important with respect to treatment-seeking. However, the extent to which different sources of perceived social support are associated with mental health remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined latent profiles based on perceived social support from different sources, and examined their relationship with sociodemographic characteris

Mentalising impairments in somatic symptom and functional neurological disorders: A systematic review.

Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) are among the most prevalent conditions within the DSM-5 category of somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRD) and are associated with substantial psychological distress and functional impairment. Although the aetiology of SSRD is multifactorial and remains uncertain, emerging evidence suggests that impairments in mentalizing - the capacity to understand one's own and others' mental states - may contribute to the development and persistence of functional somatic symptoms. Despite growing research interest, no systemat

Validity and clinical utility of distinguishing between DSM-5 somatic symptom disorder and illness anxiety disorder in pathological health anxiety: Should we close the chapter?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the validity and clinical utility of distinguishing between DSM-5 somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and illness anxiety disorder (IAD) in pathological health anxiety: the excessive and recurrent fear of, or preoccupation with, having or developing a serious health condition. METHODS: We compared SSD to IAD in pathological health anxiety (N = 334) with regard to concurrent, antecedent, and predictive validators. This was primarily a cross-sectional study, though we studied the effect of CBT longitudinally. Because we were interested in the discriminatory value of SSD and

Field-testing a psychosocial assessment scoring form for TMD patients - summarizing axis II instruments.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can be explained on the basis of a biopsychosocial model. However, psychosocial assessment is challenging in daily dental practice. The purpose of the current study was to field-test the practicability of a novel psychosocial assessment scoring form regarding the reliability of scoring procedures and the opinion of examiners. The working hypotheses were that the scoring results of inexperienced undergraduate students were similar to the results collected by a gold standard and that the scoring form was easy to use. METHODS: A psych

Neurosis: aspects of its conceptual development in the nineteenth century.

The concept of 'neurosis' does not have a very high priority in the history of psychiatry. The very few studies of the historical development of the concept are discussed, especially that of Pienero. The relations between psychiatry and neurology in the nineteenth century are described to provide a background for the constitution of the concept; its relationships to 'psychic shock' and 'psychic paralysis' are also analysed.

Obsessive-compulsive spectrum of disorders: a defensible construct?

OBJECTIVE: To explore critically whether there is a robust basis for the concept of an obsessive-compulsive (OC) spectrum of disorders, and if so, which disorders should be included. METHOD: Selective literature review concentrating on three proposed members of the OC spectrum, namely body dysmorphic disorder, hypochondriasis and trichotillomania. RESULTS: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) itself is a heterogeneous condition or group of conditions, and this needs to be appreciated in any articulation of a 'spectrum' of OC disorders. The basis for 'membership' of the spectrum is inconsisten

Elements of neuroticism in relation to items of mental and somatic content.

This study assessed relations of thinking with depression within Neuroticism items as suggested by Guilford. The sample of 600 university students were 500 men and 300 women. "Thinking" was measured by 12 items referring to mental or cognitive activity and contrasted with 11 items referring to somatic or physiological activity, selected from the Neuroticism scales of Forms A and B of the Eysenck Personality Inventory. "Depression," in contrast to "nervousness," was measured by a 10-item scale by Eysenck. A chi-square indicating scores on mentalistic and depressive items were significantly asso

Hypochondriacal concerns and somatization in panic disorder.

To clarify the relationship between panic disorder and the symptoms of hypochondriasis and somatization, we evaluated these symptoms and diagnoses in patients attending an Anxiety Disorders Clinic. Structured clinical interviews, self-report measures, and symptom diaries were used to assess 21 patients with panic disorder, 23 patients with social phobia, and 22 control subjects with no psychiatric disorders. Ten of the patients with panic disorder (48%) also met DSM-IV criteria for hypochondriasis, whereas only one of the patients with social phobia and none of the healthy control subjects met

[Panic attacks and panic syndrome--diagnosis and therapy].

Paroxysmal states of anxiety that cannot be traced back to somatic causes have been called panic attacks since the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III) of the American Psychiatric Association. This term has since been accepted as part of psychiatric everyday language in many countries. The present review discusses initially the diagnostic and differential diagnostic aspects against the background of nosological classifications as practised to date, with particular emphasis on the requirements of the practising psychiatrist. The authors of this revi

Concurrent incidence of depression and physical symptoms among hostile young women.

Analyses of questionnaire responses from 166 young women on the Cook-Medley Hostility scale of the MMPI, Beck Depression Inventory, and Wahler Physical Symptoms Inventory indicated significant differences between hostile and nonhostile women on depression scores, ranging from mild mood disturbance to borderline clinical depression. Hostile women also endorsed more items which indicated pervasive somatic complaints such as nausea, fatigue, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular distress. These results are discussed in the context of negative emotion and degenerative disease.

Secondary affective disorder in women with somatization disorder.

Of 60 women with somatization disorder (SD), 54 (90%) met DSM-III criteria for a major affective episode. This group with secondary affective disorder (SAD) was compared with 29 women who had primary affective disorder (PAD). SAD patients reported significantly more symptoms, more psychiatric admissions, more and longer episodes of depression; more had attempted suicide, and more had made multiple attempts. SAD patients had often been hospitalized and were likely to have been treated with lithium and a variety of antidepressants. Studying relatively homogeneous primary psychiatric diagnoses fa
