Emerging Object Representations in the Visual System Predict Reaction Times for Categorization.

Recognizing an object takes just a fraction of a second, less than the blink of an eye. Applying multivariate pattern analysis, or "brain decoding", methods to magnetoencephalography (MEG) data has allowed researchers to characterize, in high temporal resolution, the emerging representation of object categories that underlie our capacity for rapid recognition. Shortly after stimulus onset, object exemplars cluster by category in a high-dimensional activation space in the brain. In this emerging activation space, the decodability of exemplar category varies over time, reflecting the brain's tra

Introduction to special issue on social ecological approaches to community health research and action.

We have the potential to make new, substantive contributions to resolving our most pressing community health problems. However, to do so we must adopt a philosophy of science that is directed towards understanding the dynamic complexity and full contextual reality surrounding these issues. A social ecological approach to science is ideally suited to this challenge. This framework is systems-oriented and defines research problems in terms of structures and processes, generating research outcomes that give insight into the dynamic interaction of individuals with their environment across time and

The habitual, spatial and temporal conditions of everyday youth intergroup contact in an ethnically diverse city.

There is substantial evidence that positive intergroup contact can reduce prejudice. Most everyday interactions, however, are not deliberately structured to be positive, and individuals do not always engage in intergroup contact even when there is opportunity. The present research adopts a qualitative approach to understand how youth negotiate everyday contact with outgroup friends and acquaintances in the ethnically diverse city of Bradford, England. We explore how youth intergroup interactions manifest in everyday life, how urban spaces facilitate or inhibit them, and the psychological proce

Constant crisis management: service provider perspectives on adapting homeless resources for people who use drugs and alcohol.

Homeless service providers in Montreal, Canada face increasingly challenging circumstances in delivering services to people who use drugs and alcohol experiencing homelessness. While this group continues to be overrepresented in homeless counts and conditions to their sustainable exit to homelessness continue to be difficult, this research asks, 1) What are the limitations of the current service provision in Montreal for addressing the needs of homeless substance users? How can services be adapted?; and 2) Which larger societal conditions create barriers for homeless individuals who use drugs

Study on the extension law of fractures in shale reservoirs under impact loads.

Fracturing technology is an important technique in the development of shale reservoirs. Compared with conventional hydraulic fracturing, explosive fracturing technology has the advantages of low cost and environmental protection. Relevant research results have shown that this technology can effectively improve the efficiency of shale oil and gas extraction. To further reveal the mechanism of reservoir fracture propagation under explosive fracturing, this paper conducted experimental research on the propagation law of complex fractures in shale reservoirs under impact load. The dynamic elastic

Motorized and non-motorized mixed traffic characteristics and lateral opening spacing calculation for the section of arterial highway through small towns.

A large number of motor vehicles and non-motorized vehicles mixed in the section of arterial highway crossing the town leads to many traffic problems. Therefore, it is necessary to set up a side divider between motorized and non-motorized lanes, and the appropriate spacing of lateral crossing openings to meet the needs of non-motorized vehicles crossing the highway has become a key issue that must be resolved. This paper investigates the traffic flow characteristics of mixed traffic flow on arterial highways through small town sections, and from the two dimensions of highway access efficiency

Chosen postures during specific sitting activities.

This research study analysed the interaction between people's postures and activities while in semi-public/leisure situations and during transportation (journey by train). In addition, the use of small electronic devices received particular emphasis. Video recordings in German trains and photographs in Dutch semi-public spaces were analysed using a variation of Branton and Grayson's (An evaluation of train seats by observation of sitting behaviour. Ergonomics, 10 (1), (1967), 35-51) postural targeting forms and photos. The analysis suggests a significant relationship between most activities an

The psychology of memorial sites: Space, design and visitor experience.

Memorials are key sites for the study of collective memory, shaping how societies remember, grieve, and engage with the past. This article reviews current psychological research on memorials from three interrelated perspectives: space, design, and visitor experience. First, it examines how memorials transform contested spaces across their life cycle-from spontaneous emergence to official establishment, re-signification, and removal. Second, it traces the historical shift from vertical, heroic monuments to minimalist, participatory counter-memorials that foster reflection and plural remembrance

Structural damage to the rat eye following long-term simulated weightlessness.

To better perform space missions and develop human spaceflights, the eye health of astronauts is receiving increasing attention from researchers. In this study, we used prolonged tail suspension to simulate microgravity cephalad fluid shift in space to observe intraocular pressure (IOP) changes, retinal structure, and optic nerve damage in rats. We observed significant choroidal thickening and optic nerve demyelination lesions in the rats in each experimental group. At the cellular level, retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) survival was significantly reduced, optic nerve oligodendrocytes were reduce

Is open-angle glaucoma caused by impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation: around the optic nerve?

Chronic open-angle glaucoma is the most frequent type of glaucoma and a leading cause for blindness. The role of intraocular pressure (IOP) in the pathogenesis of open-angle glaucoma has been challenged by patients with typical glaucomatous optic disc changes and visual field loss in whom the IOP never exceeded normal values (normal-tension glaucoma), as well as by patients with persistently elevated IOP who do not develop glaucomatous disc or field changes. Recent research has demonstrated that the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is not evenly distributed in all CSF spaces and that the subarachnoid

Exposure of neonatal male rats to estrogen induces abnormal morphology of the penis and loss of fertility.

The research objectives are to determine whether estrogen-induced infertility is associated with abnormal morphology of the penis and if morphological alterations can be reversed by testosterone (T). Male pups received diethylstilbestrol (DES) on alternate days from postnatal days 2 to 12. They received T or empty implants at 180 days, were tested for fertility at 188 days, and terminated at 200 days. While 5/7 control males sired pups, only 1/6 did in the DES group, and 0/8 in the DES plus T group. In addition to reductions in penile length and weight, the novel structural change induced by D

The use of crystalloidal and colloidal solutions for volume replacement in hypovolemic shock.

A wide variety of colloidal and crystalloidal fluids, as well as blood and blood products, are available to the clinician for treatment of the hypovolemic patient. These fluids vary with respect to the size, shape, and concentrations of electrolytes, colloidal molecules, and/or cellular components, duration of volume-expanding effects, incidence of allergic reactions, and effect on the coagulation system. When these fluids are administered intravenously, their distribution in the vascular, interstitial, and cellular compartments can be predicted from fundamental physiological principles as wel

The generative potential of mess in community-based participatory research with young people who use(d) drugs in Vancouver.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is increasingly standard practice for critical qualitative health research with young people who use(d) drugs in Vancouver, Canada. One aim of CBPR in this context is to redress the essentialization, erasure, and exploitation of people who use(d) drugs in health research. In this paper, we reflect on a partnership that began in 2018 between three university researchers and roughly ten young people (ages 17-28) who have current or past experience with drug use and homelessness in Greater Vancouver. We focus on moments when our guiding principles of

A Multi-Scale Temporal Convolutional Network with Attention Mechanism for Force Level Classification during Motor Imagery of Unilateral Upper-Limb Movements.

In motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) research, some researchers have designed MI paradigms of force under a unilateral upper-limb static state. It is difficult to apply these paradigms to the dynamic force interaction process between the robot and the patient in a brain-controlled rehabilitation robot system, which needs to induce thinking states of the patient's demand for assistance. Therefore, in our research, according to the movement of wiping the table in human daily life, we designed a three-level-force MI paradigm under a unilateral upper-limb dynamic state. Based on th

DoE-Driven Development of an Organocatalytic Enantioselective Addition of Acetaldehyde to Nitrostyrenes in Water.

The development of an enantioselective enamine-catalysed addition of masked acetaldehyde to nitroalkenes via a rational approach helped to move away from the use of chloroform. The presented research allows the use of water as a reaction medium, therefore improving the industrial relevance of a protocol to access very important pharmaceutical intermediates. Critical to the success is the use of chemometrics-assisted 'Design of Experiments' (DoE) optimisation during the development of the presented new synthetic approach, which allows to investigate the chemical space in a rational way.

[The research progress in gingival invagination].

Gingival invagination is a type of gingival cleft that occurs during orthodontic space closure in some of the orthodontic patients who received tooth extraction. Clinical manifestations may be fine folds in attached gingiva surface, or deep cleft that penetrates the interdental papilla from the buccal to the lingual alveolar process. Gingival invagination can affect the health of local periodontal tissues, the effect and stability of orthodontic treatment. This article reviews the research progress of gingival invagination studies, including the definition, manifestations, causes, influencing

From protection to entitlement: selecting research subjects for early phase clinical trials involving breakthrough therapies.

Our goals are to (1) set forth and defend a multiprinciple system for selecting individuals who meet trial eligibility criteria to participate in early phase clinical trials testing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR T-cell) for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when demand for participation exceeds spaces available in a trial; (2) show the relevance of these selection criteria to other breakthrough experimental therapies; (3) argue that distinct distributive justice criteria apply to breakthrough experimental therapies, standard research and healthcare and (4) argue that as evidence of benefit increa

Implementing two treatment approaches to childhood dysarthria.

The paucity of evidence and detail in the literature regarding speech treatment for children with dysarthria due to cerebral palsy (CP) renders it difficult for researchers to replicate studies and make further inroads into this area in need of exploration. Furthermore, for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) wishing to follow treatments that the literature indicates have promise, little guidance is available on the details of the treatments that yielded the positive results. The present article details the implementation of two treatment approaches in speech treatment research for children wi

A New Era in Leptomeningeal Disease (LMD): Recent Advancements in Immunocellular and Radiation Therapies in Melanoma LMD, What Has Been Done and Future Directions.

Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) or leptomeningeal metastases (LM) occurs when tumor cells invade the leptomeningeal and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) space. Melanoma is the most common cancer causing LMD (M-LMD). Its biology and pathophysiology are very poorly understood. Research efforts are being made to explore the mechanisms underlying the immune landscape and antitumor response in LMD. The significant advances in immunocellular and targeted therapies in unresectable or metastatic melanoma in the last decade have not translated to patients with LMD and the prognosis for these patients remains dis
