Explainable Machine Learning for Voice Disorder Screening Using Acoustic Features From Multiple Speech Tasks.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated and compared the performance of machine learning models across four acoustic feature sets designed to distinguish pathological voices from normal controls. Additionally, Explainable Artificial Intelligence techniques were applied to identify the specific acoustic parameters driving the models' predictions. METHODS: A total of 1111 voice samples were analyzed. Four feature sets were constructed: sustained vowel, connected speech, concatenated sample, and the combined feature set. Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting classifiers we

Neurofilament light chain and voice acoustics in dementia diagnosis (NAVAIDD): Protocol for a cohort study assessing the real-world diagnostic utility of blood and digital biomarkers in clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: The advent of disease modifying therapies for dementia has highlighted the need for simple, accessible and low-cost diagnostic tests. Blood and digital biomarkers increase accuracy in highly selected research populations. However, their real-world applicability for diverse clinical populations remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: We will investigate the utility of plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) and voice acoustic analysis in a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual population. We hypothesise that NfL and voice acoustic biomarkers will discriminate between individuals with a neurodegenerati

[How do results in BAKO 1-4 and H-LAD-test correlate with auditory processing?].

OBJECTIVE: An increasing number of children seem to have a deficiency in Central Processing as a reason for reading and writing difficulties (RWD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD). There is often also a delay in phonological consciousness. A test would therefore be useful to distinguish children with RWD and ADD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study involved 75 consecutive schoolchildren from the 1 (st) to 5 (th) classes (ages 6-11), and was carried out at the Department of Phoniatric-Paediatric Audiology at the University ENT Clinic Ulm. Various tests were undertaken: hearing tests for perip

Cochlear implantation in older patients: outcomes and comparisons.

OBJECTIVES: A review of adults receiving cochlear implants (Cls) at the Yorkshire Cochlear Implant Service (YCIS) was performed to assess whether age affects use or outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all patients over the age of 50 implanted and habilitated at the YCIS was undertaken. Outcome measures included quality of life (QoL) questionnaires and speech perception tests: CUNY sentences and BKB sentences. Comparisons were made between patients implanted age 50 to 59 (A), 60 to 69 (B) and 70 and over (C). Patients with English as a second language and those implanted for less th

Heparan sulfate derived disaccharides in plasma and total urinary excretion of glycosaminoglycans correlate with disease severity in Sanfilippo disease.

BACKGROUND: Sanfilippo disease (Mucopolysaccharidosis III) is a neurodegenerative lysosomal disorder characterized by accumulation of the glycosaminoglycan heparan sulfate (HS). MPS III has a large phenotypic variability and early assessment of disease severity is difficult. We investigated the correlation between disease severity and the plasma concentration of HS (pHS, defined by the sum of the heparan sulfate derived disaccharides obtained after enzymatic digestion) and urinary total GAGs level (uGAGs, measured by the dimethylene blue test) in a cross-sectional cohort of 44 MPS III patients

Interindividual variability in the benefits of personal sound amplification products on speech perception in noise: A randomized cross-over clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: The aging population is prone to hearing loss, which has several adverse effects on quality of life, including difficulty following conversations in noisy environments. Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs) are a less expensive, over-the-counter alternative to traditional, more expensive hearing aids. Although some studies have shown that PSAPs can mitigate hearing loss, the literature generally only addresses group differences without considering interindividual variability. This study aimed to 1) determine how PSAPs affect listening effort and speech perception in noise an

Recognizing Voices Through a Cochlear Implant: A Systematic Review of Voice Perception, Talker Discrimination, and Talker Identification.

OBJECTIVE: Some cochlear implant (CI) users report having difficulty accessing indexical information in the speech signal, presumably due to limitations in the transmission of fine spectrotemporal cues. The purpose of this review article was to systematically review and evaluate the existing research on talker processing in CI users. Specifically, we reviewed the performance of CI users in three types of talker- and voice-related tasks. We also examined the different factors (such as participant, hearing, and device characteristics) that might influence performance in these specific tasks. DE

Olfaction in the autism spectrum.

The autism spectrum (AS) is characterised by enhanced perception in vision and audition, described by the enhanced perceptual functioning (EPF) model. This model predicts enhanced low-level (discrimination of psychophysical dimensions), and mid- and high-level (pattern detection and identification) perception. The EPF model is here tested for olfaction by investigating olfactory function in autistic and Asperger participants. Experiment 1 targeted higher-order olfactory processing by assessing olfactory identification in nine Asperger, ten autistic, and eleven typically developed individuals.

Aspects in diagnostics of central neural hearing disorders.

The central neural hearing disorders - in contrast to central cortical lesions - can be concretely defined audiometrically, and they can be localized realiably within the 2nd-4th neurons. For this purpose a definite test program is needed; especially indicative are the behavior of the acoustico-facial stapedius reflex and the results in dichotic discrimination and ERA. SISI and difference limen mostly point to a neural dysfunction, but - in distinct patterns of impairment - they may correspond to the picture of a peripheral hearing disorder as well. A fatigue of hearing apparently only appears

Discrimination of normal and aphasic subjects on a test of syntactic comprehension.

An Anglophone population consisting of 37 aphasic patients and 23 normal control subjects, and a Francophone population consisting of 49 aphasic patients and 23 control subjects were given a task requiring the comprehension of syntactic structures for the correct assignment of thematic roles to nouns. Discriminant analysis was used to classify subjects into aphasic and normal groups according to their scores on the task. In both populations--Anglophone and Francophone--most of the subjects were classified into their actual groups except for an occasional normal subject classified with the apha

Effects of Age and Noise Exposure on Proxy Measures of Cochlear Synaptopathy.

Although there is strong histological evidence for age-related synaptopathy in humans, evidence for the existence of noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy in humans is inconclusive. Here, we sought to evaluate the relative contributions of age and noise exposure to cochlear synaptopathy using a series of electrophysiological and behavioral measures. We extended an existing cohort by including 33 adults in the age range 37 to 60, resulting in a total of 156 participants, with the additional older participants resulting in a weakening of the correlation between lifetime noise exposure and age. We
