Spontaneous resolution of exuberant localized sporotrichosis after childbirth.

Sporotrichosis is caused by the thermodimorphic fungi of the genus Sporothrix. It is the most common cutaneous mycosis in Latin America, but it is considered uncommon in pregnancy. We report a pregnant woman with with an exuberant ulcerated plaque that proved to be localized sporotrichosis. Therapy choice is a difficult decision in this group of patients. In this case, there was complete resolution of the infection after delivery, without any therapeutic intervention.

Sporotrichosis following a rodent bite. A case report.

A ten year old boy developed lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis following a wild rodent bite. The infection was successfully treated with potassium iodide. Sporotrichosis in humans has followed bites, pecks and stings inflicted by a variety of animals, birds and insects. Many species of animals are susceptible to infection by Sporothrix schenkii, but transmission from infected animals to man is uncommon.

Mucosal Sporotrichosis from Zoonotic Transmission: Descriptions of Four Case Reports.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic mycosis caused by a dimorphic fungus of the genus Sporothrix. Zoonotic-transmitted sporotrichosis has become a major public health concern and is characterised by a different clinical pattern from the traditional epidemiology of sporotrichosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the details of four patients with mucosal sporotrichosis with regional lymphadenopathy (three cases of granulomatous conjunctivitis and one case of nasal sporotrichosis). The patients' age range was between 23 to 46 years old and their gender was three female and one male…

The use of (1-3) β-glucan along with itraconazole against canine refractory sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis, caused by the Sporothrix schenckii fungal complex, is a zoonotic mycosis distributed worldwide. Itraconazole is the treatment of choice for domestic animals although some fungal isolates have shown resistance to this drug. The objective of this study was to report, for the first time, the use of (1-3) β-glucan along with itraconazole in the treatment of a canine with sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis. The animal had ulcerated and crusted lesions, especially on the nasal planum. Clinical samples were collected for a complete blood count, cytological analysis of th…

Outbreak of Feline Sporotrichosis with Zoonotic Potential in the Seventh Health District of Maceió-AL.

Sporotrichosis is a mycosis with zoonotic potential caused by species of Sporothrix. Once thought rare in northeastern Brazil, the disease has recently been spreading, leading to an emergency health issue. In this paper, we describe an outbreak of feline sporotrichosis in the Seventh Health District of Maceió-AL. We collected samples from 23 domiciled and non-domiciled felines without regard for age, breed, sex, and neutering state. Skin samples were analyzed cytologically under a light microscope and seeded onto Sabouraud dextrose agar at 25 °C for from 15 to 30 days. Fifteen of the twenty-th…

Inflammation and epigenetics of sporotrichosis disease.

Sporotrichosis, a fungal disease, is caused by exposure to soil that harbors Sporothrix schenckii or through inhalation of fungal spores. Skin is the most frequently exposed organ making sporotrichosis a primarily dermal disease. Many described reports in the literature suggest a connection of sporotrichosis with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with some connection between initial sporotrichosis diagnosis and treatment followed by development of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma at the very site. Conversely, there is also evidence for sporotrichosis subsequent to skin cancer diagnosis, even …

Ocular sporotrichosis: A frequently misdiagnosed cause of granulomatous conjunctivitis in epidemic areas.

PURPOSE: Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix sp., a dimorphic fungus. Although the cutaneous form is the most frequent form, the ocular presentation has been increasingly diagnosed in epidemic areas. We describe three cases of ocular sporotrichosis with the involvement of the ocular adnexa due to autoinoculation without trauma with successful antifungal treatment. OBSERVATIONS: Patient 1: A 68-year-old woman presented with granulomatous conjunctivitis of the right eye with an ulcerated nodule on the right temporal region for 5 months. Patient 2: A 46-year-old woman w…

Sporotrichosis: an overview and therapeutic options.

Sporotrichosis is a chronic granulomatous mycotic infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii, a common saprophyte of soil, decaying wood, hay, and sphagnum moss, that is endemic in tropical/subtropical areas. The recent phylogenetic studies have delineated the geographic distribution of multiple distinct Sporothrix species causing sporotrichosis. It characteristically involves the skin and subcutaneous tissue following traumatic inoculation of the pathogen. After a variable incubation period, progressively enlarging papulo-nodule at the inoculation site develops that may ulcerate (fixed cutaneou…

The importance of considering the possibility of ocular sporotrichosis in areas with high incidence rates of sporotrichosis.

Ocular sporotrichosis involving adnexa can present in 4 types: granulomatous conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, and bulbar conjunctivitis. The incidence of ocular sporotrichosis has increased in regions with high incidence rates of sporotrichosis. We present a series of three cases of ocular involvement by the fungus Sporothrix species, including its manifestations, approaches, and relevance in areas where sporotrichosis has considerable incidence rates.

Sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is a deep fungal disease caused by a dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii. It occurs more frequently in the tropical and subtropical areas and is mainly characterized by nodular lesions of cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues and adjacent lymphatics that suppurate and ulcerate. Infection occurs by manipulation of contaminated soil, cats, or some wild animals or by inhalation of spores. Itraconazole is the best drug for treatment of sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichoid lymphangitis due to group A Streptococcus.

We describe what is, to our knowledge, the first case of sporotrichoid lymphangitis caused solely by group A Streptococcus in an otherwise healthy patient. Infection with pyogenic pathogens, such as streptococci and staphylococci, as well as with the most common causes of sporotrichoid lymphangitis (i.e., Sporothrix schenkii, Nocardia brasiliensis, Mycobacterium marinum, and Leishmania species) should be considered in differential diagnosis for some patients.

Sporotrichosis in Mysore: a case report to emphasize the role of histopathology.

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis is unusual in southern India. The diagnosis was made by histopathological examination which is purported to have poor sensitivity. The culture of the specimen confirmed the diagnosis. The pre-eminent role of a careful study of serial sections is emphasized.

Clove Oil-Based Nanoemulsion Containing Amphotericin B as a Therapeutic Approach to Combat Fungal Infections.

Background/Objectives: Candidiasis, primarily caused by Candida albicans, and sporotrichosis, mainly caused by Sporothrix schenckii, are skin fungal infections that pose serious threats to global health. The Candida auris is a great concern in immunocompromised individuals, and while Sporothrix brasiliensis cause sporotrichosis, an infection commonly found in cats, this disease can be transmitted to humans through scratches or bites. Existing treatments for these fungal infections often cause problems related to resistance and significant side effects. Consequently, development of alternative …

Immune genes CD247 STAT1 and LCK mediate host-pathogen interactions in sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is a chronic subcutaneous infection caused by the Sporothrix complex, a dimorphic fungus that exhibits significant clinical heterogeneity. However, the molecular targets and underlying mechanisms of Sporothrix globosa infection remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to integrate whole-transcriptome sequencing analysis of skin lesion tissues from patients with sporotrichosis and healthy controls. In addition, differential gene expression screening, protein-protein interaction network construction, and functional enrichment analysis. We systematically identified the ke…
