Infection is a major cause of orthopedic implant failure. There are few studies assessing both tissue cell and bacterial adherence on common orthopedic implant materials in a co-culture environment. An in vitro co-culture model was created using K12 osteosarcoma cells and Staphylococcus aureus in a medium incubated over metal disks for 48 h. The argon laser microscope recently developed by the author is used to vaporize the stapes tendon, the posterior crus and a rosette of holes in the stapes footplate in the surgical treatment of otosclerosis. An autogenous vein--stainless steel piston assembly is used to reconstruct the stapes portion of the ossicular chain. The surgical technique and results in a preliminary series of 11 patients are reported. Rationale and advantages over conventional stapedectomy are discussed.

A technique has been developed for electropolishing the bore of metal capillary tubes. Although developed specifically for stainless-steel tubes, the technique should be directly applicable to other metals. Tubes with inside diameter as small as 0.20 mm and 110 mm long have been successfully electropolished. The electropolishing technique can be used to increase the critical flow of a capillary tube in a controllable way.

In rabbit knees 600 Staphylococcus aureus organisms produced progressive infection in 50 per cent of the knees injected, whereas 5.3 times 10-7 Micrococcus species caused only transient colonization of the joints. Methicillin, cephacetrile, and clindamycin administered before injection of the staphylococci gave protection.
