We report the case of a patient with chronic granulomatous disease and acne treated with isotretinoin, who developed a diffuse staphylococcal skin infection during the therapy. Chronic granulomatous disease is a rare genetic disorder characterized by an altered innate immunity with an increased risk of potentially lethal bacterial and fungal infections. Although chronic granulomatous disease is rare, acne is a common manifestation in these patients, but there are no data about the gold standard therapy.

Epidermolytic ichthyosis is characterized by erythema and blistering at birth. We present a neonate with epidermolytic ichthyosis who had a subtle change in clinical findings while hospitalized, including increased fussiness, erythema, and a change in her skin odor, which represented superimposed staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. This case highlights the unique challenge of recognizing cutaneous infections in neonates with blistering skin disorders and emphasizes the importance of having a high suspicion for superinfection in this population.

Puncture wounds to the foot are a common occurrence. If treated properly, the majority will be resolved without major complications. Toxic shock syndrome and streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome are devastating complications of some staphylococcal and streptococcal infections. This paper discusses the similarities and differences between the two toxic states, reviews the pathophysiology, and presents a case report of near-fatal streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome secondary to a puncture wound of the foot.

Staphylococcus aureus is an extremely virulent pathogen that is capable of quickly evolving and developing antibiotic resistance. To overcome this problem, new antibiotics have been developed. Some of these have been licenced for use in clinical practice, mainly for the treatment of adults with acute skin and soft tissue infections, in addition to both community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and nosocomial pneumonia (hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia). In this paper, the main characteristics and clinical use of new licenced anti-staphylococcal drugs

Rapid bone destruction often leads to permanent joint dysfunction in patients with septic arthritis, which is mainly caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Staphylococcal cell wall components are known to induce joint inflammation and bone destruction. Here, we show that a single intra-articular injection of S. aureus lipoproteins (Lpps) into mouse knee joints induced chronic destructive macroscopic arthritis through TLR2. Arthritis was characterized by rapid infiltration of neutrophils and monocytes. The arthritogenic effect was mediated mainly by macrophages/monocytes and partially via

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus causes a wide range of infections from mild skin and soft tissue to severe life-threatening bacteremia. The pathogenicity of S. aureus infections is related to various bacterial surface components and extracellular proteins such as toxic-shock syndrome (TSS) toxin and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL). In this study we determine the antimicrobial resistance of isolated strains and their virulence genes in Ethiopia.
METHODS: A total of 190 archived S. aureus isolates from four Ethiopia Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance sites were analyzed. The identi

Bacterial species responsible for food infections and intoxication are sometimes carried through the food production and processing. Very few published literatures exist on integrons among antibiotic-resistant staphylococcal strains from foods of animal origin in Gauteng Province, South Africa, hence this study. A total of 720 samples (360 meat and 360 dairies) from a community abattoir of a research farm in South Africa, using conventional bacteriological and molecular methods. Nine (9) bacterial strains, including Bacillus subtilis AYO-123, Acinetobacter baumannii AYO-241, Staphylococcus len

Superantigens are thought to play a role in acute infections and in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases that are believed to have an infectious etiology. The effect of the superantigens staphylococcal enterotoxin A, staphylococcal enterotoxin B, and streptococcal M type 5 protein on T cells derived from inflammatory tissues and peripheral blood (PB) of arthritis patients was studied in seven rheumatoid arthritis (RA), two psoriatic arthritis, two reactive arthritis, and one ankylosing spondylitis patient. Superantigen-reactive T cells and T cell lines derived from the PB, synovial fluid (S

INTRODUCTION: Sternoclavicular infections are unusual, and it even more unusual for infection to occur here as a primary site.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 53-year-old patient with no prior medical history or risk factor who consulted because of sternal swelling of inflammatory character. CT-scan, bacteriological and histological analysis of samples concluded the diagnosis of primary sternoclavicular staphylococcal septic arthritis. Management consisted of antibiotics and was associated with a flattening of the lesion. The outcome at 6 months was favorable.
CONCLUSION: Sternoclavicul

Flomoxef (FMOX, 6315-S) was given intravenously to 21 children with the following acute bacterial infections; 10 cases of bronchopneumonia, 3 cases each of purulent lymphadenitis and urinary tract infection, 2 cases of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and 1 case each of peritonsillar abscess, pyothorax and purulent meningitis. Good clinical responses were obtained in 18 out of 21 patients, and bacteriologically, all of the 17 isolated strains were eradicated. No side effect was observed except for 1 case with soft stool and 2 cases of eosinophilia. From the above clinical results, it is ap

The characteristics of and prognosis for nosocomial spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and bacteremia were examined in a prospective study that included data from 194 consecutive episodes of SBP and 119 episodes of bacteremia, 93.3% of which were nosocomial, in 200 hospitalized cirrhotic patients. Gram-positive pathogens were predominant (70% of the total) among isolates from nosocomial infections; the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was 24.8%. Nosocomial and staphylococcal infections were associated with a higher mortality rate than were community-acquire…

This report concerns an 18-month-old boy who presented with a 6% total body surface area scald. The subject of this report is unique in that he developed the largest exfoliation described in literature. After 3 days an epidermal exfoliation with the appearance of a deliberately inflicted scald developed. As the exfoliation progressed to over 95% total body surface area the suspicion of child abuse or neglect could be abandoned. The diagnosis Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome was set, due to the finding of Staphylococcus aureus on swabs, the lack of mucosal engagement, and the patient's age.

Nongonococcal septic arthritis in adults is usually caused by infections with staphylococcal or streptococcal species. In patients with underlying diseases, especially those with chronic joint disease or malignancy, bacterial isolates from infected joint spaces may include group G streptococci. Occasionally, group G streptococcal arthritis may occur in otherwise healthy individuals. We report a case of pyogenic sacroiliitis in a healthy young adult and review the pertinent literature concerning group G streptococcal arthritis.

As the percentage of rabbit feed is very small compared to the bulk of animal feeds, there is a fair chance that rabbit feed will be contaminated with constituents (additives) of batches previously prepared for other animals. Contamination of rabbit feed with monensin derived from previous runs could occur. This contamination may result in anorexia, abortion, high mortality in breeding does and outbreaks of bacterial infections (pasteurellosis and staphylococcal infection) in affected populations.

The hyperimmunoglobulin E recurrent-infection syndrome is considered a primary immunodeficiency syndrome characterized by recurrent staphylococcal infections both cutaneous and pulmonary, chronic dermatitis, otitis and sinusitis. Our case report can be interesting for the age of the patient (39 years old), for the absence of visceral lesion and for the development of a peculiar gingival hyperplasia. The review of literature has shown that this kind of gingivitis is not usual but not extraordinary.

A patient with coarse facies, craniosynostosis, recurrent staphylococcal infections with pneumatocele formation is described. Laboratory features included moderately elevated serum IgE, cutaneous anergy, decreased numbers of T-suppressor cells and variable inhibition of neutrophil chemotaxis. The combination of clinical findings suggests the diagnosis hyper-IgE syndrome, though the total IgE serum concentration (800 U/ml) and the level of IgE-specific antibodies to staphylococci (9.4%, normal less than 5%) were only slightly elevated.

Staphylococcal skin infection (pyoderma) is a common clinical problem in dogs. The infection can be either superficial or deep. Most cases of staphylococcal pyoderma occur secondary to a definable underlying cause. Treatment consists of finding the underlying cause and correcting it, if possible, and treating the pyoderma with antibiotics. Antibacterial shampoos may be used as adjunct treatment, but corticosteroid drugs should not be used. When canine pyoderma recurs in the absence of an identifiable underlying cause, several treatment strategies can be effective in eliminating recurrence or l

The frequency, predisposing factors, therapy, and outcome of 45 episodes of bacteremia due to Staphylococcus aureus were reviewed in adult cancer patients. A poor performance status (i.e., patients largely bedridden), progressive neoplastic disease, and compromise of the mucocutaneous defense barriers characterized the patients with S. aureus sepsis. Seventeen patients died soon after the onset of infection: seven (16%) as direct result of staphylococcal sepsis, seven of factors unrelated to infection, and three of secondary sepsis due to gram-negative bacilli. The data presented here and repo

The prominence of Staphylococcus aureus as a cause of serious human infection has prompted extensive studies of the microbiology, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of staphylococci and staphylococcal infections. Staphylococci are of the family Micrococcaceae, although there are diverse genetic and phenotypic differences between them and other members of this family. Of the more than 20 species of staphylococci, only three are clinically significant: S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and S. saprophyticus. These species can be distinguished by coagulase production and novobiocin resistance. Staphylococci …
