Distinct Autism Spectrum Disorder Phenotype and Hand-Flapping Stereotypes: Two Siblings with Novel Homozygous Mutation in TRAPPC9 Gene and Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Pathogenic mutations of the TRAPPC9 gene are the rare genetic causes of autosomal recessive intellectual disability (ID). There are several features that are not fully penetrant such as microcephaly, dysmorphic facial features, obesity, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and brain abnormalities in TRAPPC9 mutations. METHODS: We performed whole-exome sequencing to evaluate 2 Turkish siblings with ASD and ID born to healthy and consanguineous parents. Parental samples were also analyzed, specifically targeting variants detected in these p

Stereotypes do not always apply: findings from a survey of the health behaviours of mental health consumers compared with the general population in New Zealand.

AIM: Research suggests that people with mental illness frequently have worse physical health than the general population. Our study sought to investigate the health behaviours of mental health consumers in New Zealand, as we hoped that by clearly describing this group more targeted healthcare could be provided. METHOD: We surveyed 404 adult mental health consumers about their: height and weight, fruit and vegetable intake, exercise activity, smoking, alcohol and drug use. RESULTS: We found that mental health consumers abstained from alcohol more often than those from the general population s

MEF2C haploinsufficiency caused by either microdeletion of the 5q14.3 region or mutation is responsible for severe mental retardation with stereotypic movements, epilepsy and/or cerebral malformations.

BACKGROUND: Over the last few years, array-comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) has considerably improved our ability to detect cryptic unbalanced rearrangements in patients with syndromic mental retardation. METHOD: Molecular karyotyping of six patients with syndromic mental retardation was carried out using whole-genome oligonucleotide array-CGH. RESULTS: 5q14.3 microdeletions ranging from 216 kb to 8.8 Mb were detected in five unrelated patients with the following phenotypic similarities: severe mental retardation with absent speech, hypotonia and stereotypic movements. Facial dysmorph

Dopamine characteristics in rat genotypes with distinct susceptibility to epileptic activity: apomorphine-induced stereotyped gnawing and novelty/amphetamine-induced locomotor stimulation.

Rat genotypes differ in their susceptibility to spontaneously occurring spike-wave discharges and in their dopaminergic properties. In a previous study, it was found that spike-wave discharge incidence decreased in the following order in four rat genotypes during baseline and following injection with the dopamine antagonist haloperidol: apomorphine-susceptible (APO-SUS) > WAG/Rij > apomorphine-unsusceptible (APO-UNSUS) and ACI rats. The question in the present study was to what extent certain dopaminergic properties are pathognomonic for epileptic rats. Therefore, behavioral responses were ass

Entrance-sealing behavior in the home cage: a defensive response to potential threats linked to the serotonergic system and manifestation of repetitive/stereotypic behavior in mice.

The security of animal habitats, such as burrows and nests, is vital for their survival and essential activities, including eating, mating, and raising offspring. Animals instinctively exhibit defensive behaviors to protect themselves from imminent and potential threats. In 1963, researchers reported wild rats sealing the entrances to their burrows from the inside using materials such as mud, sand, and vegetation. This behavior, known as "entrance sealing (ES)," involves repetitive movements of their nose/mouth and forepaws and is likely a proactive measure against potential intruders, which e

Five members of a mixed-sex group of bottlenose dolphins share a stereotyped whistle contour in addition to maintaining their individually distinctive signature whistles.

Most commonly, animal communication systems are driven by shared call repertoires, with some individual distinctiveness encoded as a byproduct of voice cues. We provide evidence that bottlenose dolphins produce both individually distinctive whistles, and a shared whistle type. A stereotyped whistle contour (termed the group whistle) is shared by five bottlenose dolphins that have lived, worked, and traveled together for at least 21 years. These five dolphins are members of a group of eight dolphins that work as a specialized team for the Navy Marine Mammal Program. Each dolphin is routinely re

The effect of stereotypes and prejudices regarding gender roles on the relation between nurses and "Muslim fathers" in health institutions within the Community of Madrid (Spain).

Modern Western societies are characterized by a considerable cultural and ethnic diversity whereby different groups and minorities live side by side. However, not all people are viewed in the same light by the autochthonous population. This is particularly true in the case of Muslim immigrants, who are often prone to negative stereotyping and prejudice. This has become increasingly apparent since the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and the subsequent attacks in various Western countries. This study seeks to analyze the relation between female nurses and those labeled by nurses as "Muslim fa…

Vigorous, aerobic exercise versus general motor training activities: effects on maladaptive and stereotypic behaviors of adults with both autism and mental retardation.

Examined the effects of antecedent exercise conditions on maladaptive and stereotypic behaviors in 6 adults with both autism and moderate to profound mental retardation. The behaviors were observed in a controlled environment before and after 2 exercise and 1 non-exercise conditions. From the original group of 6 participants, 2 were selected subsequently to participate in aerobic exercise immediately before performing a community-integrated vocational task. Only antecedent aerobic exercise significantly reduced maladaptive and stereotypic behaviors in the controlled setting. Neither of the les

Dissection of the relationship between anxiety and stereotyped self-grooming using the Shank3B mutant autistic model, acute stress model and chronic pain model.

Self-grooming is an innate, cephalo-caudal progression of body cleaning behaviors that are found in normal rodents but exhibit repetitive and stereotyped patterns in several mouse models, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). It is also recognized as a marker of stress and anxiety. Mice with Shank3B gene knockout (KO) exhibit typical ASD-like behavioral abnormalities, including stereotyped self-grooming and increased levels of anxiety. However, the exact relationship between anxiety and stereotyped self-grooming in certain types of animal models is not clear. We selected three animal model

Urinary organophosphate insecticide metabolite concentrations during pregnancy and children's interpersonal, communication, repetitive, and stereotypic behaviors at 8 years of age: The home study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to organophosphate insecticides may be associated with autism spectrum disorders and related behaviors. This association may be modified by single nucleotide polymorphisms in the paraoxonase (PON1) enzyme. OBJECTIVE: We examined the relationship of prenatal organophosphate insecticide biomarkers with reciprocal social, repetitive, and stereotypic behaviors in 8-year old children, and modification of this relationship by child PON1 polymorphisms. METHODS: Among 224 pregnant women, we quantified concentrations of six nonspecific dialkyl phosphate (DAP) metabolites

Stereotypic rheumatoid factors that are frequently expressed in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas are rare in the labial salivary glands of patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Among autoimmune diseases, Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is most strongly associated with the development of malignant B cell lymphoma, in particular mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-type lymphoma. Previously, we have shown that in ∼40% of cases of salivary gland MALT lymphoma, high-affinity stereotypic rheumatoid factor (RF) B cell receptors, specific for IgG-Fc, are expressed. This study was undertaken to investigate whether in the inflamed salivary glands of patients with SS, a similar RF-biased Ig repertoire is present. METHODS: Extensive analyses of the B cell Ig VH region r

Could dromedary camels develop stereotypy? The first description of stereotypical behaviour in housed male dromedary camels and how it is affected by different management systems.

Dromedary camel husbandry has recently been evolving towards a semi-intensive system, due to the changes in use of the animal and the settlement of nomadic populations. Captivity could restrict its social activities, limiting the expression of various behavioural needs and causing the manifestation of stereotypy. The aims of this trial were, firstly, to identify and describe some stereotypical behaviours in captive male dromedary camels used for artificial insemination and, secondly, to study the effects on them of the following husbandry management systems: i) housing in single boxes for 24 h

Gut microbiota transfer from autoimmune dry eye mice imprints stereotypic B cell receptor repertoires in the lacrimal gland and induces disease.

Gut microbiota and humoral immunity have been suggested as key players in the pathogenesis of Sjögren disease (SjD), but their mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we transferred the gut microbiota of SjD-like autoimmune dry eye disease model mice to B6 mice, then characterized the resulting gut microbiome composition, clinical ocular phenotype, and B cell receptor (BCR) repertoire. Notable changes were observed in the gut microbiome of NOD-FMT mice, accompanied by SjD-like clinical features, including elevated corneal fluorescein staining scores, reduced tear production, increased IL-6 m

Patients' perceptions of male and female nursing interns in Guangdong and Guangxi, Southern China: The interplay of gender stereotypes, patient satisfaction, and willingness to receive care.

Nursing remains female-dominated globally, with gender stereotypes hindering workforce diversity. Male nurses account for 2% to 5% of China's nursing workforce, and Guangdong/Guangxi lack studies on patients' perceptions of male nursing interns. This study aims to explore relationships between gender stereotypes, patient satisfaction, and willingness to receive care from male/female nursing interns in Guangdong/Guangxi and identify influencing factors. In this study, a multicenter cross-sectional survey (Mar-Jun 2025) enrolled 460 inpatients from 4 tertiary hospitals (2 each in Guangdong/Guang

Effects of the Partial M1 Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor Agonist CDD-0102A on Stereotyped Motor Behaviors and Reversal Learning in the BTBR Mouse Model of Autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a set of neurodevelopmental disorders marked by a lack of social interaction, restrictive interests, and repetitive behaviors. There is a paucity of pharmacological treatments to reduce core ASD symptoms. Various lines of evidence indicate that reduced brain muscarinic cholinergic receptor activity may contribute to an ASD phenotype. METHODS: The present experiments examined whether the partial M1 muscarinic receptor agonist, 5-(3-ethyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine hydrochloride (CDD-0102A), alleviates behavioral flexibilit

Ketamine acutely impairs memory consolidation and repeated exposure promotes stereotyped behavior without changing anxiety- and aggression-like parameters in adult zebrafish.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic in human and veterinary clinic, as well as an abuse drug that acts on several neurotransmitter systems. The use of alternative animal models, such as zebrafish, is emerging to study the effects of drugs on neurobehavioral responses. Here, we evaluated the effects of ketamine on memory consolidation (acute protocol), as well as on anxiety-, aggressive-like behavior, and whole-body cortisol levels in adult zebrafish after a repeated exposure. For the acute protocol, fish were tested in the inhibitory avoidance task (training and testing with a 24-hour interv
