Frequency and prognostic value of IgA and IgG endomysial antibodies in recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a common disease of the oral mucous membranes. Currently a hypothesis is being discussed that it might be pathogenetically related to coeliac disease. We evaluated the frequency of coeliac disease anti-endomysial (or anti-transglutaminase) antibodies in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Blood samples from 42 patients were evaluated and 2/42 (4.7%) were IgA- and IgG-endomysial antibody-positive. None of the 42 persons in the control group had antibodies, which was not statistically different from the patient group. The two antibody-positive patients h…

Arabidopsis FAMA controls the final proliferation/differentiation switch during stomatal development.

Coordination between cell proliferation and differentiation is essential to create organized and functional tissues. Arabidopsis thaliana stomata are created through a stereotyped series of symmetric and asymmetric cell divisions whose frequency and orientation are informed by cell-cell interactions. Receptor-like proteins and a mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase were previously identified as negative regulators of stomatal development; here, we present the characterization of a bona fide positive regulator. FAMA is a putative basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor whose activ

Crystal structure of the low-pH form of the vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein G.

The vesicular stomatitis virus has an atypical membrane fusion glycoprotein (G) exhibiting a pH-dependent equilibrium between two forms at the virus surface. Membrane fusion is triggered during the transition from the high- to low-pH form. The structure of G in its low-pH form shows the classic hairpin conformation observed in all other fusion proteins in their postfusion conformation, in spite of a novel fold combining features of fusion proteins from classes I and II. The structure provides a framework for understanding the reversibility of the G conformational change. Unexpectedly, G is hom…

The association of tobacco and other factors with recurrent aphthous stomatitis in an US adult population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine point and annual prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). SETTING: Reported prevalence of RAS in textbooks and much of the literature varies according to study location, patient selection and whether point prevalence (presence of lesions at examination) or period prevalence (history of lesions during a specified period) is reported. Many studies are based on non-probability samples and this may contribute to significant variation in reported prevalence and factors presumed to be associated with RAS. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Third National Health an…

Depolymerization of actin cytoskeleton is involved in stomatal closure-induced by extracellular calmodulin in Arabidopsis.

Extracellular calmodulin (CaM) plays significant roles in many physiological processes, but little is known about its mechanism of regulating stomatal movements. In this paper, whether CaM exists in the guard cell walls of Arabidopsis and whether depolymerization of actin cytoskeleton is involved in extracellular CaM-induced stomatal closing are investigated. It is found that CaM exists in guard cell walls of Arabidopsis, and its molecular weight is about 17 kD. Bioassay using CaM antagonists W7-agarose and anti-CaM serum shows that the endogenous extracellular CaM promotes stomatal closure an

The significance of serum nitric oxide levels in Behçet's disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory multisystem disorder characterized by recurrent oral and genital aphthous ulcers, arthritis, uveitis, and thrombophlebitis; it can involve several organs. However, recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) can be seen without a confirmed diagnosis of BD. Moreover, there is no way of predicting whether a patient with RAS will develop BD. Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical synthesized from L-arginine by one of the family of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes. Increased production of NO during several inflammatory and infectious processes has been recently pos…

[The effects of indomethacin spray on the pain of stomatitis in the patients for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation].

We studied the effects of 0.25% indomethacin (IM) spray as an in-hospital preparation on the pain of stomatitis after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in 9 patients with various types of leukemia by measuring the change in pain and the decrease in morphine dose. Stomatitis above grade 2 (painful erythema, edema, or ulcers but can eat or swallow) appeared in all patients as white blood cell (WBC) counts declined after transplantation, and clockwise hysteresis was observed between WBC counts and the grade of stomatitis. When the patients used IM spray for the pain of stomatitis and were j…

Involvement of superoxide generation in salicylic acid-induced stomatal closure in Vicia faba.

Salicylic acid (SA), the known mediator of systemic acquired resistance, induced stomatal closure of Vicia faba L. Application of SA to the epidermal peels evoked an elevation of chemiluminescence of Cripridina lucigenin-derived chemiluminescent reagent (CLA) which is sensitive to superoxide anion (O(2)(.-)). The SA-induced generation of chemiluminescence was suppressed by O(2)(.-)-specific scavengers superoxide dismutase (SOD) and 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonic acid (Tiron). These results suggest that O(2)(.-) was generated in epidermal peels by SA-treatment. A peroxidase inhibitor salic

Ulcerative facial and nasal dermatitis and stomatitis in cats associated with feline herpesvirus 1.

Ulcerative dermatitis of the nasal planum or haired skin of the face, associated with intranuclear inclusion bodies compatible with herpesvirus, was identified in nine cats. Clinically, lesions were ulcerative and crusted, and often persistent. A tenth cat had focal proliferative ulcerative stomatitis, also associated with intranuclear inclusion bodies. Microscopically, there was necrosis and ulceration associated with prominent eosinophilic inflammation. Intranuclear inclusion bodies were noted in all cases, within the surface or adnexal epithelium. Ultrastructural examination of skin from tw…

Clinical evaluation of the use of low-intensity ultrasound in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of low-intensity ultrasound in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. STUDY DESIGN: Fifty patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis were enrolled, and 35 patients completed this randomized crossover trial. The ultrasound was self-administered by twice daily use of an ultrasonic toothbrush. The level of aphthous ulcer activity was first observed for each patient with the use of either an ultrasonic or placebo toothbrush over a 6 month period. Patients were then observed for a 2 to 4 month period while using the alternat…

A Behçet-like disease presenting as ulcerative stomatitis and scarring pustular lesions of the face.

Behçet's disease is a complex multisystem disease of unknown origin. It presents clinically as oral, pharyngeal, and genital ulcerations, uveitis, and inflammatory papulopustules. Diagnosis is made clinically since laboratory and histologic observations are not specific. We present a patient who, despite the absence of eye and genital lesions, seems best viewed as having Behçet's disease.

Stomatitis in the bone marrow transplant patient. An overview and proposed oral care protocol.

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a treatment modality associated with a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal complications. One effect is painful stomatitis. Stomatitis is defined as an inflammatory and ulcerative reaction of the oral cavity. Stomatitis in the transplant patient is attributable to one, several, or all of the following: effects of high-dose chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy delivered pretransplant; infection; acute or chronic graft-versus-host disease (in the allogeneic transplant recipient); the condition of the oral cavity pretransplant; and side effects of other medications …

Effectiveness of oral chlorhexidine for reducing stomatitis in a pediatric bone marrow transplant population.

Disruption of the oral mucosal lining and the lack of normal defense mechanisms predispose bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients to life-threatening infections, often caused by oral flora. Chlorhexidine, used as an oral antiseptic, appears promising in limiting oral bacteria and fungi, and therefore, may decrease oral complications associated with BMT. The purpose of this study was to determine in pediatric BMT recipients if a 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthrinse, used as an adjunct to normal in-hospital oral care regimens, would decrease the severity of oral mucositis as measured by oral ulceration

Clinical evaluation of benzydamine, chlorhexidine, and placebo mouthwashes in the management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Eighteen patients with minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis were given alcoholic benzydamine hydrochloride, aqueous chlorhexidine, or a benzydamine-free placebo mouthwash in random order. Each patient used each preparation for a 3-month period. Ulcer diaries were marked at the same time each week during the 9-month test period. Records were made of the number, size, sites, and pain severity of any ulcers present. Statistical analysis of the results showed no significant differences between any of the treatments tested. Stinging of the oral mucosa was the only consistent side effects noted by ni…

Hydrocephalus in weanling mice induced by a temperature-sensitive mutant of vesicular stomatitis virus.

Hydrocephalus developed in weanling Swiss-Webster mice after intracerebral (IC) inoculation of a naturally selected temperature-sensitive (ts) mutant of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). This spontaneous ts mutant was isolated from a persistent infection (pi) of mouse L cells with VSV, and named VSV-tspi 364 (complementation Group I). High doses of the mutant virus induced hydrocephalus in 87% of the mice. Infected mice were clinically asymptomatic, except for a few with transient hind-limb paralysis and proximal muscle weakness. After inoculation, mice were killed every other day for the firs…

Genetic analysis of resistance to lethal infections of vesicular stomatitis virus in Syrian hamsters.

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), Indiana serotype, causes a lethal disease in adult Syrian hamsters. Susceptibility to low doses of VSV (10 to 100 plaque-forming units) was shown to be genetically determined by examining six inbred strains. Three strains, LSH, MHA, and CB, were found to be extremely susceptible, with more than 70% of the animals dying within 72 h after intraperitoneal injection. Two strains, MIT and UT2, were intermediately susceptible, with approximately 60% of VSV-infected animals surviving. One strain, UT1, was found to be highly resistant; however, resistance was not acqu…

Responses of hawaiian plants to volcanic sulfur dioxide: stomatal behavior and foliar injury.

Hawaiian plants exposed to volcanic sulfur dioxide showed interspecific differences in leaf injury that are related to sulfur dioxide-induced changes in stomatal condutance. Species with leaves that did not close stomata developed either chlorosis or necrosis, whereas leaves of Metrosideros collina closed stomata and showed no visual symptoms of sulfur dioxide stress.

The entry into host cells of Sindbis virus, vesicular stomatitis virus and Sendai virus.

We have compared the mechanisms of entry into host cells of three enveloped viruses: Sendai virus, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and Sindbis virus. Virus entry by membrane fusion should antigenically modify the surface of a newly infected cell in such a way that it will be killed by anti-viral antibody and complement. On the other hand, virus entry by a mechanism involving uptake by the cell of the whole virion should not make cells sensitive to antibody and complement. As expected, cells newly infected with Sendai virus were readily and completely lysed by anti-Sendai antibody and compleme…
