The present study assessed the presence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in response to stressful or traumatic life events and their impact on HIV risk behaviors and associated psychosocial variables among men who have sex with men (MSM). Participants (n=189; 60% HIV-infected) who were recruited by notices posted in a community health clinic and via a modified respondent-driven sampling technique completed a behavioral assessment survey. Sixty percentage of participants screened positive for having PTSD symptoms using the startle, physiological arousal, anger, and numbness scr

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with an increased risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We aimed to identify predictors and develop models for the prediction of depression and PTSD symptoms at 6 months post-TBI.
METHODS: We analysed data from the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury study. We used linear regression to model the relationship between predictors and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) and PTSD symptoms (PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual fo

INTRODUCTION: As a result of local military conflicts that have become more frequent over the past decades, the number of military personnel subjected to combat stress has sharply increased. More than 50% of them suffer from combat posttraumatic stress disorder. The most common comorbidity in this category of patients is a traumatic brain injury. Due to the undesirability of the long-term use of pharmacological agents, for rehabilitation, preference should be given to physiotherapeutic procedures.
OBJECTS AND METHODS: We examined 50 patients with post-traumatic stress disorder in combination

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that afflicts many individuals, yet the neuropathological mechanisms that contribute to this disorder remain to be fully determined. Moreover, it is unclear how exposure to mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), a condition that is often comorbid with PTSD, particularly among military personnel, affects the clinical and neurological presentation of PTSD. To address these issues, the present study explores relationships between PTSD symptom severity and the microstructure of limbic and paralimbic gray matter brain regions,

BACKGROUND: Home demolition is one of the issues that the Palestinian community faces as a result of Israeli procedures that can impact Palestinian mental health. This study aimed to measure the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and stress among Palestinian citizens whose homes were demolished.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional design was adopted using a purposive sample of home demolished versus not home demolished Palestinian people. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the Depression and Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) were u

BACKGROUND: Research that focused on the mechanisms underlying the relation between school bullying victimization and PTSD ignored the simultaneous effect of emotional and cognitive factors, which may limit our comprehensive understanding of their roles. Besides, most researchers included non-bullying victims in data analysis, and this may mask the true effect among bullying victims. The present study aimed to explore the relation between bullying victimization and PTSD, and the mediating roles of social anxiety, loneliness, and rumination, after filtering out non-bullying victims.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders (EDs) are frequently comorbid, but mechanisms shared between their comorbidity remain understudied. Interconnected moral emotions, such as disgust, shame, and guilt, show associations with these disorders, yet, no research has tested if these emotions are unique or overlapping factors contributing to symptoms of OCD, PTSD, and EDs.
METHOD: The present cross-sectional study (N = 3513) investigated the potential overlap of disgust sensitivity, state shame, and state guilt in a large sampl

BACKGROUND: LGBTQI+ individuals appear to be particularly at-risk of exposure to interpersonal violence. This leads to an increased risk of developing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). The objectives of this systematic review is to: (1) Compile the prevalences of PTSD/C-PTSD among LGBTQI+ individuals; (2) Compare the symptomatology of PTSD/C-PTSD according to sexual orientation and gender identity; (3) Identify the factors involved in the symptomatology of PTSD/C-PTSD among LGBTQI+ individuals.

Narrative exposure therapy (NET) is an individual therapeutic approach that has an emerging evidence base for children. It was initially trialed with refugee and asylum seeking populations, in low, middle and high-income settings, utilizing either lay or professional therapists. The results of treatment trials for PTSD in refugee children with NET (or the child "KIDNET" adaptation) demonstrates how this is an effective intervention, is scalable and culturally dexterous. This paper describes, in five cases from clinical practice settings, the applicability of NET into broader, routine practice.

BACKGROUND: Altered amygdala activation to fear-related stimuli has been proposed to be a potential neural correlate of heightened threat sensitivity in anxiety- and stress-related disorders. However, the role of stimulus awareness and disorder specificity remains widely unclear. Here we investigated amygdala responses to conscious and unconscious fearful faces in patients suffering from panic disorder (PD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and in a large sample of healthy controls (HC).

Severe interpersonal difficulties are central to both complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), two trauma-related disorders with substantial clinical overlap. Whether their relational impairments reflect shared or distinct profiles remains an open question. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis of 92 studies (20 on CPTSD, N = 9,657; 72 on BPD, N = 17,842) reporting associations with interpersonal problems. Medium-to-large effects were observed for both CPTSD (r = .48, 95% CI [0.37, 0.58]) and BPD (r = .39

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur, yet research on this comorbidity is limited. Recent advancements in this area have led to the emergence of new studies that provide insight into the relationship between these disorders, potential treatment interventions, and the ongoing debate surrounding the diagnosis of Complex PTSD. This review aims to examine these findings and evaluate whether they address key gaps identified in the review by Frías & Palma (Psychopathology 48(1):1–10, 2014). METHODS: A literature search was co

Genes involved in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis may be a robust biomarker of psychiatric disorders. Genetic polymorphisms of the SKA2 gene are associated with several behavioral disorders. In this study, we embarked on a systematic search of all possible reports of genetic association with SKA2 and affective disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide behavior; the functional consequences of nsSNPs were explored through computational tools with an in silico analysis. Eight eligible articles were included. Our study identified that SKA2 did not show association with risk of

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders and psychiatric disorders stand in a bidirectional relationship. Sleep complaints are prominent in populations with psychiatric disorders, especially amongst people with major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Consultations at sleep clinics offer opportunities to screen psychiatric disorders and to propose primary psychiatric care.
METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted on 755 patients making their first visit to sleep clinic, with 574 seeking consultation for suspected obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS), 1

Background: There are two primary phenotypic models of comorbidity between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and drug use disorder (DUD), i.e. self-medication (PTSD precedes and causes DUD) and susceptibility (DUD precedes and causes PTSD). We sought to clarify the longitudinal relationship between PTSD and DUD, while examining sex differences.Method: We used approximately 23 years of longitudinal data from Swedish population registries to conduct two complementary statistical models: Cox proportional hazard models (N ≈ 1.5 million) and a cross-lagged panel model (N ≈ 3.8 million). Results:
