Meningiomas seldom occur in children, and spinal meningioma in a child is rare. We report the case of a boy, 3 years and 5 months of age, who had an unusual atypical meningioma involving the subarachnoid space from T-2 to the cauda equina. To our knowledge, no similar case has been reported previously.

This case report describes a 37-year-old man with a blind eye with opaque media. Histopathology revealed an aggressive adenocarcinoma of the retinal pigment epithelium with marked invasion of the choroid, retina, sclera and--not previously reported--the orbital and cranial optic nerve and subarachnoid space. The tumour seeded into the lumbar spinal-cord space. Metastatic foci--not in continuity with the primary process--developed in the parietal lobe and cerebellopontine angle. Adenocarcinoma of the retinal pigment epithelium, which occurs rarely in longstanding blind eyes, may exhibit aggress…

Six histologically confirmed cases of esthesioneuroblastoma re reported. Two case had presented with primarily an intracranial mass, two had intracranial extension of a nasal tumour and the remaining two had only nasal growth. Local recurrence in the form of a swelling at the root of nose and metastases to the cervical vertebra, dorsal extradural space and lumbar subarachnoid space were seen in one case each. Aggressive treatment with surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy improved the qualityof life in locally recurrent and metastatic disease. CT scan findings and the role of chemotherap…

We report a case of a 17-year-old male who had hit the front of his head in a traffic accident. CT scan revealed contusional hemorrhage and pneumocephalus of the left frontal lobe 10 hours after the accident. A month later he complained of rhinorrhea and CT scan revealed intracerebral pneumocephalus. One day he complained of headache and began to vomit after he sneezed. CT scan revealed that the pneumocephalus had become worse and air had spread throughout the subarachnoid space. Bone CT scan revealed the air communicated from the frontal sinus to the intracerebral air cavity. 3D-CT scan revea…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Flat detector CT (FDCT) has been used as a peri-interventional diagnostic tool in numerous studies with mixed results regarding image quality and detection of intracranial lesions. We compared the diagnostic aspects of the latest generation FDCT with standard multidetector CT (MDCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 102 patients were included in our retrospective study. All patients had undergone interventional procedures. FDCT was acquired peri-interventionally and compared with postinterventional MDCT regarding depiction of ventricular/subarachnoidal spaces, detection of intra

BACKGROUND: Exophytic growth (EG), wherein the tumor mass grows beyond the neuraxial boundary formed by pia mater, remains a rare pattern of glioma growth. It has been described in gliomas at several locations like the brainstem, cerebellum, suprasellar area, spinal cord, and insula. However, EG in hemispheric grade 2 astrocytomas, particularly affecting the convexity subarachnoid space, as against the more spacious basal subarachnoid space, is exceedingly rare. To the best of our knowledge, there is only 1 such case reported in the English literature. Due to the extreme rarity, little is know…

Syringomyelia is a condition with many possible causes, the commonest of which seems to be an abnormality at the foramen magnum. Such cases may be grouped under the heading of "Hindbrain related syringomyelia" and the principles of treatment for all such cases are largely similar. The commonest of these foramen magnum region abnormalities is hindbrain herniation which may be associated with a history of birth difficulties, a small posterior fossa, segmentation abnormalities of the cervical vertebrae or the base of the skull, arachnoiditis of the subarachnoid spaces, subarachnoid pouches, hydro…

In this region, the dura mater adhered to the internal wall of the spinal canal, and the subarachnoid space was large indicating that injection would be into the subarachnoid rather than the epidural space. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effects of low-dose subarachnoid injections of 2% lidocaine (LIDO) and 0.5% bupivacaine (BUPI) in goats.
ANIMALS: 6 healthy, privately owned female goats.
METHODS: In this randomized blind crossover clinical trial, each goat received 0.05 mL/kg-1 of LIDO, BUPI, or sterile saline solution into the lumbosacral subarachnoid space, with a seven-day washout. Cardiorespiratory variables, rectal temperature, and somatosensory (pinprick) and motor (ataxia) functions were recorded at baseline (time 0) and 2, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes after injection, then ev…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (SANCC) is the most severe form of Taenia solium CNS infection and accounts for the majority of neurocysticercosis-associated mortality. Inflammation is important in the treatment of SANCC because overactivity can lead to serious complications, but excessive suppression may be counterproductive toward parasite eradication. A relative abundance of CSF IL-10 to IL-12 has been associated with increased treatment duration for patients with SANCC, suggesting that IL-10 plays an important role in this disease process. To better understand SA

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic infection of the central nervous system and is typically diagnosed through visualization of the cysts in the cerebral parenchyma by neuro-imaging. However, neuro-imaging may not detect extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis (EPNCC), which is a rare manifestation of the disease involving the subarachnoid, meningeal, and intraventricular spaces. We report 2 cases of extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis, and discuss the diagnostic challenges and management of this entity.
METHODS: Two cases were identified through clinical records.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is an essential and critical component of the central nervous system (CNS). According to the concept of the "third circulation" originally proposed by Cushing, CSF is mainly produced by the choroid plexus and subsequently leaves the cerebral ventricles via the foramen of Magendie and Luschka. CSF then fills the subarachnoid space from whence it disperses to all parts of the CNS, including the forebrain and spinal cord. CSF provides buoyancy to the submerged brain, thus protecting it against mechanical injury. CSF is also transported via the glymphatic pathway to reach…

INTRODUCTION: The pineal region is situated in the posterior part of the incisural space. This region includes the pineal body inside the quadrigeminal arachnoidal cistern. This article reviews the anatomic features of this region, with particular emphasis on those aspects of importance for surgical access to the pineal region.
MATERIAL & METHODS: Five cadaver heads fixed in 10% formalin and injected with colored latex were used for anatomic dissection (five other specimens were also prepared and dissected to illustrate the articles on surgical techniques and approaches presented elsewhere in

The authors describe a case of 28-year-old man who presented with cervical myelopathy and lumbar radiculopathy due to the giant cervical pseudomeningocele extending to the lumbar spine at 10 years after previous brachial plexus injury. To evaluate the communicating tract between pseudomeningocele and subarachnoidal space, the multidetector-row helical CT with simultaneous myelography was performed preoperatively. The surgical treatment in the cervical spine included the resection of pseudomeningocele and the repair of dural defects communicating into the cyst following multi-level laminoplasty

PURPOSE: Subarachnoid cysticercosis, an uncommon form of neurocysticercosis, can occasionally grow to giant size causing mass effect and obstructive hydrocephalus. These often require surgical excision to relieve the mass effect and re-establish the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathways.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The authors report a rare case of giant anterior interhemispheric racemose cysticercosis with extension to the region of septum pellucidum causing obstructive hydrocephalus.
INTERVENTION: Due to the proximity of the cysts to the dilated ventricular system, a frontal transventricular endos

Neurochemical changes may precede the development of clinical signs in neurological disease. Early identification of such changes may offer an opportunity to avoid or treat complications. Under experimental conditions, extracellular levels of glutamate and other amino acids can be monitored by in-vivo microdialysis in cerebral ischemia, head trauma and epilepsy. Data on the release of glutamate under ischemic conditions in humans are limited. There is no published data on the effects of temperature variation or other manipulations on the extracellular glutamate levels in humans. We report for

Subarachnoid injection during a retrobulbar block is a rare complication, requiring prompt recognition and management of life-threatening respiratory and cardiac depression. This case report describes a patient who began to decompensate 2 minutes after receiving a retrobulbar block. Central nervous system symptoms progressed from restlessness and confusion to respiratory arrest and cardiac depression. Intubation, ventilatory support, and treatment of mild bradycardia and hypotension were provided. One hour after the incident, the patient was fully awake and was extubated. Brain stem anesthesia
