Enhancing Performance and Stability of PEDOT:PSS-Based Organic-Inorganic Planar Heterojunction Solar Cells through Dimethyl Sulfone Doping.

This paper presents a simple method of enhancing the performance and stability of a DMSO2 treated PEDOT:PSS film as a hole-transport layer in an organic-inorganic planar heterojunction solar cell. By integrating dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2 or D2 for short) alongside ethylene glycol and methanol, significant improvements in the power conversion efficiency (PCE), conductivity, morphology, and long-term stability are achieved. Notably, DMSO2 induces unique morphological reorganization leading to enhanced screening upon film drying, aligning PEDOT chains and thus enhancing electrical conductivity. Sol

Sulfonate-mediated hydrogen-bond network modulation and proton enrichment at zerovalent iron-water interface for efficient hydrodechlorination reaction.

Hydrogenation reaction driven by atomic hydrogen (*H) in nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI)-water system holds great promise for deep dechlorination of refractory organic compounds, while adequate *H supply at nZVI-water interface remain challenges due to random proton transfer and rapid *H recombination. Inspired by the metalloproteins in natural enzymes, an interfacial hydrogen-bond network modulation strategy was proposed to design sulfonate modified nZVI (S-nZVI), which realized oriented proton transfer and surface *H confinement, offering sufficient *H for dechlorination reaction. S-nZVI ac

Rational design of electron-deficient COFs via ketone and sulfone functionalization for dramatically enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production.

Rational integration of ketones and sulfones into electron-deficient COFs creates an internal electric field that optimizes charge separation and carrier mobility, boosting superoxide radical generation for photocatalytic H2O2 production. Sulfone-functionalized Tp-DDS outperforms its electron-rich counterpart, establishing a clear structure-activity relationship for next-generation COF photocatalysts.

The main metabolite of fipronil, fipronil sulfone triggers morphological and functional damage to SerW3 cells and dysfunction in blood-testis barrier.

Fipronil sulfone (FS) is one of the main metabolites of the wide-spectrum insecticide fipronil, and it is used against non-agricultural pests. Exposure to fipronil is recognized for its detrimental effects on non-target organisms, including birds, bees, and mammals. Due to FS accumulation in testicular tissue, SerW3 Sertoli cell toxicity, morphology, and specifically the structure and functions of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) have been thoroughly investigated. In this study, SerW3 cells were exposed to 10, 20, and 40 µM FS, and the cell viability assay was conducted. The cell morphology and

Reproductive toxicity of perfluorobutane sulfonate in zebrafish (Danio rerio): Impacts on oxidative stress, hormone disruption and HPGL axis dysregulation.

Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic chemicals extensively used in consumer products. Perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), a short-chain PFAS, has been introduced as an alternative to long-chain PFAS, but limited studies have investigated its reproductive toxicity in fish. In this study, adult zebrafish were exposed to PFBS at concentrations of 0.14, 1.4, and 14 μM for 28 days. PFBS accumulation in male and female gonads was confirmed by specific mass spectrum peaks detected in exposed samples. PFBS exposure at 14 μM significantly reduced egg production and hatching rates.

Comparison of toxic effects of phenanthrene and perfluorooctane sulfonate on Chinese tongue sole Cynoglossus semilaevis larva in a muti-biomarker approach.

Phenanthrene (Phe) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are among the most frequently detected contaminants in the coastal environment of China. However, comparative studies on the toxic effects of these two chemicals in fish are limited. This study examined biomarker responses in Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) larvae exposed to sublethal Phe/PFOS (10 and 100 μg/L) for 7 days. The results showed that both Phe and PFOS significantly altered antioxidant indexes, such as activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD), and the detoxification metabolic p

Electrochemical Three-Component C-H Functionalization of Indoles with Sodium Bisulfite and Alcohols to Access Indole-Containing Sulfonate Esters.

Herein, an efficient electrochemical three-component C-H functionalization of indoles with sodium bisulfite and alcohols is described, providing a sustainable and convenient synthetic route for the construction of structurally valuable indole-containing sulfonate esters in moderate to good yields. This protocol proceeds in an undivided cell without any metal catalysts or oxidants, features a broad substrate scope, and has an excellent functional group tolerance. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a radical-radical pathway may be involved in this three-component reaction system.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) induces liver cytotoxicity by activating autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum stress-regulated mitochondrial pathway apoptosis.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), a common alternative to perfluorootane sulfonate, is extensively used in various industrial products. As PFHxS contamination becomes more prevalent, it has been detected in human umbilical cord blood, serum, and breast milk, among other samples. In humans, the elimination half-life of PFHxS is at least 8.5 years. Although PFHxS shows the highest tissue-plasma partition coefficients in the liver and is known to cause liver hypertrophy, the mechanisms underlying PFHxS-induced hepatotoxicity remain unclear. In present study, the impacts of PFHxS on human liver L

Vinyl sulfone-amino-alkyl supports: heterofunctional matrixes to prevent enzyme release and stabilize lipases via covalent immobilization.

New trifunctional supports were prepared (amino-octyl-vinyl sulfone (VS)- and amino-hexyl-VS-agarose) and compared to octyl-VS-agarose. They were utilized to immobilize the lipases A and B from Candida antarctica (CALA and CALB). After incubation to generate some enzyme-support bonds and blocking with different nucleophiles, SDS-PAGE analyses showed that all enzyme molecules become covalently immobilized on the support. In all VS biocatalysts, the blocking reagent presented a great effect in the properties of enzymes. The best blocking agents promoted a significant enzyme stabilization compare

Influence of Aluminum Incorporation on the Adsorptive Performance of Silica-Based Supported Sulfonic Acid for the Chemical Recovery of Gaseous O-Xylene.

A group of silica-based supports with varying Al/Si ratios (S-x) was synthesized using the sol-gel method, followed by a chlorosulfonic acid modification to produce supported sulfonic acids (SA-x). The S-x and SA-x materials, along with their adsorption products, were characterized via techniques such as FTIR, BET, and HPLC-MS. The analysis revealed that the sulfonic acid groups in the SA-x materials existed in two anchoring states: the covalently bonded (CB) state [SiOx-O]ɗ--SO3Hɗ+ and the ion-paired (IP) state AlOy+:OSO3H-. The sulfonation reactivity of the CB-state sulfonic acid was enhance

Sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate alleviates fetal growth restriction by mediating aquaporin-3 expression in placental trophoblast cells.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is characterized by the inability of the fetus to achieve its growth potential due to pathological factors, most commonly impaired placental trophoblast cell function. Currently, effective prevention and treatment methods of FGR are limited. We aimed to explore the pathogenesis of FGR and provide potential strategies for mitigating its occurrence. The case-control study compared AQP3 expression in placental trophoblast cells of pregnant women with FGR and those with normal pregnancies. Then mouse FGR models were induced via cadmium exposure, and placental trophob

Intratracheal perfluorooctane sulfonate induces pulmonary injury via TLRs signaling and disrupts sex steroidogenesis through systemic translocation.

Numerous studies have reported the widespread presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in both indoor and outdoor air, yet the inhalation toxicity of these substances remains poorly understood. This research aims to investigate the lung and reproductive toxicity associated with respiratory exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), particularly focusing on low doses of PFOS which were even lower than the human internal exposure levels. By intratracheal instillation of low (5 μg/kg), medium (25 μg/kg), and high (625 μg/kg) doses of PFOS, we demonstrated that repeated inhalatio

A high-throughput LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous analysis of albendazole, albendazole sulfoxide and albendazole sulfone in human plasma.

Albendazole is a benzimidazole derivative with a broad spectrum of antihelmintic activity. Its primary metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, is responsible for the treatment's efficacy. On the other hand, it contributes to side effects and toxicity. Therefore, their quantification in plasma may increase therapeutic success and reduce associated risks by maintaining values within the therapeutic range. The present study introduces an LC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous quantification of albendazole, albendazole sulfoxide, and albendazole sulfone in human plasma. A simple and sensitive LC-MS/MS me

Analyzing the impact of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) on the reproductive system using network toxicology and molecular docking.

Growing evidence suggests that perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) contribute to reproductive toxicity, with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) being the most extensively studied. These chemicals are known to lower testosterone levels and compromise the integrity of the blood-testis barrier. However, the specific mechanisms of their reproductive toxicity remain largely unknown due to research limitations. In this study, we utilized network pharmacology to pinpoint the core genes and signaling pathways implicated in the reproductive toxicity caused by PFOA and PFOS.
