Studies were made of the physiologic changes in the lung of young growing pigs intratracheally inoculated at 5.5 to 6 weeks of age with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Hematologic changes also were studied. Studies were performed at the 4th, 5th, and 6th weeks after inoculations were done. The inoculated pigs had a marked decrease in body weight gain. There were no significant changes in the heart rate, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature, even though at necropsy the apical, cardiac, and diaphragmatic lobes of the lungs of inoculated pigs had scattered, but well-demarcated, pneumonic lesions. A total of 72 pigs weaned at 4 wk of age were allotted by litter and weight to nine treatment groups and fed 20% protein cornsoybean meal diets supplemented with various levels of inorganic Se during a 37-d postweaning period. Partial renal ablation was produced in 15/17 swine kidneys after segmental intraarterial injection of 1-2 ml of 95% ethanol. Complications were seen in 3 kidneys, including reflux of ethanol into nontarget vessels with subsequent total infarction of 2 kidneys, and the development of hydronephrosis in 1 kidney. Strictly selective catheterization and a very slow injection of ethanol are essential to avoid complications. This technique may find clinical application and the possible indications are discussed.

Rectal stricture with anastomoses of colon and/or small intestine to a spherical dilatation of the descending colon proximal to the stricture was observed in six swine. In three of these swine, feces bypassed most of the colon in passage from the small intestine to the dilated colon. Rectal stricture with an anastomosis of a loop of colon to the rectal stricture was observed in one pig where feces bypassed much of the stricture.

The effect of aflatoxin consumption on the development of acquired immunity to swine erysipelas was studied. Twenty-four pigs were divided into 4 groups (6 pigs/group). Two groups were fed a normal diet and 2 groups were fed the same diet but containing aflatoxin. The production of acute hypocalcemia was investigated using either 80 U. MRC of salmon calcitonin or 160 1. mrc of pork calcitonin in 117 subjects (58 patients with Paget's disease, 22 with osteoporosis, 22 with Sudeck-Leriche algodystrophy and 15 control subjects).
