OBJECTIVE: Patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) have immune cell abnormalities that remain poorly understood. This study compared primary APS (PAPS) and secondary APS (SAPS) patients with healthy controls with respect to peripheral blood lymphocytes, CD4+T cell subsets, and cytokine levels. These immunopathogenesis studies of leprosy have provided new insight into the immune response to M leprae at the site of disease activity, the skin lesions. The study of leprosy provides a model for studying the immune response to foreign pathogens as well as the immunopathologic study of skin lesions. Further developments in immunology and molecular biology will increase our ability to dissect such immune mechanisms. For example, the advent of the polymerase chain reaction will allow for a more complete elucidation of the cytokines in inflammatory skin lesions.

We report a case of meningitis associated with tsutsugamushi disease. The lymphocyte subpopulation study of peripheral blood revealed a reversed CD4/CD8 ratio (0.14), an increased number of activated T cells and an elevated cytotoxic T cell activity. Lymphopenia is a recognized but poorly studied feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We set out to establish the prevalence and significance of lymphopenia in RA. A group of 66 RA patients was studied for one year. During this time 10 (15%) had persistent lymphopenia (lymphocyte count less than 1.00 X 10(9)/l) without evidence of Felty's syndrome.
