Executive function deficits in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) measured using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Tests Automated Battery (CANTAB).

BACKGROUND: Chronic prenatal alcohol exposure causes a spectrum of deleterious effects in offspring, collectively termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), and deficits in executive function are prevalent in FASD. The goal of this research was to test the hypothesis that children with FASD exhibit performance deficits in tasks that assess attention, planning and spatial working memory. METHODS: Subjects (8-15 years male and female children) with a diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial FAS (pFAS), or alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND), and age- and sex-matche

Therapeutic Exercises Induce Distinct Regional Activation Patterns of the Fibularis Longus Muscle in People With Chronic Ankle Instability.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is common in athletic populations and is associated with recurrent sprains and impaired performance. Recent evidence shows that fibularis longus has distinct anterior and posterior regions and that, during isometric eversion, people with CAI display a reduced relative contribution of the posterior region. This muscle is typically trained with band-resisted eversion in supine (BES) and BOSU-based exercises (seated and single-leg eversion, BOSU-Sit and BOSU-SL, respectively), yet it is unknown whether these specific tasks correct or perpetuate regional

Addressing the burden of violence on global mental health: contributions of Narrative Exposure Therapy across different health systems.

Post-traumatic stress disorder represents a substantial global mental health burden, particularly in the face of cumulative violence, forced migration, and structural inequities. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) configures a brief trauma-focused intervention that supports the reconstruction of autobiographical memory by the chronological narration of life events. By integrating fragmented traumatic experiences into a coherent narrative, NET facilitates emotional processing and restores continuity to disrupted life stories. This regional case series examines the integration of NET into the ment

From innovation to implementation: strengthening anterior ocular inflammatory surface diseases diagnostics through global health policy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dry eye disease (DED), allergic conjunctivitis (AC), and infectious conjunctivitis (IC) are anterior ocular inflammatory surface diseases (AOISD) that remain overlooked, particularly in low-resource settings. This review explores the policy and health system factors driving inequities in AOISD diagnosis and highlights strategic pathways for scaling up access through global public health integration. RECENT FINDINGS: While diagnostic innovations such as tear-based biomarkers, artificial intelligence (AI) tools, and teleophthalmology platforms offer promising solutions, imple

Health-care provision and policy for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa, which has a population of more than 1 billion people, carries 24% of the global burden of disease and spends the least on health care of any region, relying heavily on international development assistance to deliver health care for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. The demographic and epidemiological transitions occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, with rising prevalences of obesity and diabetes, enhance the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), yet this remains an unrecognised complication of metabolic syndrome. There are no guidance documents on NAFLD from sub-Saha

Normal aging and Parkinson's disease are associated with the functional decline of distinct frontal-striatal circuits.

Impaired ability to shift attention between stimuli (i.e. shifting attentional 'set') is a well-established part of the dysexecutive syndrome in Parkinson's Disease (PD), nevertheless cognitive and neural bases of this deficit remain unclear. In this study, an fMRI-optimised variant of a classic paradigm for assessing attentional control (Hampshire and Owen 2006) was used to contrast activity in dissociable executive circuits in early-stage PD patients and controls. The results demonstrated that the neural basis of the executive performance impairments in PD is accompanied by hypoactivation wi

Poor cognitive flexibility in eating disorders: examining the evidence using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task.

BACKGROUND: People with eating disorders (ED) frequently present with inflexible behaviours, including eating related issues which contribute to the maintenance of the illness. Small scale studies point to difficulties with cognitive set-shifting as a basis. Using larger scale studies will lend robustness to these data. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 542 participants were included in the dataset as follows: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) n = 171; Bulimia Nervosa (BN) n = 82; Recovered AN n = 90; Healthy controls (HC): n = 199. All completed the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST), an assessment that i

Cognitive deficits in euthymic patients with recurrent depression.

Neurocognitive impairments are found in people recovered from major depression compared with never-depressed controls. A total of 20 patients in recovery from recurrent unipolar depression and 20 healthy controls were tested using a neuropsychological battery containing tasks of executive function (Wisconsin Card Sort Test), attention, visuomotor speed, and working memory. The recovered-depressed group performed poorly in comparison to healthy controls on the planning and problem solving aspects of the Wisconsin Card Sort Test, even after controlling for subclinical depressive symptoms. West London first-episode study of schizophrenia. Clinical correlates of duration of untreated psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Studies in schizophrenia suggest that a longer initial period of untreated illness is associated with a poorer clinical outcome. AIMS: To determine whether, in first-episode schizophrenia, a longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) or of untreated illness (DUI) (DUP plus any prodrome) is associated with clinical variables that could mediate a poor prognosis. METHOD: Clinical, social, neuropsychological and oculomotor function data on 53 patients with first-episode schizophrenia were related to the DUP and DUI. RESULTS: Comparing short and long DUP groups split around the med

Patterns of perceptual asymmetry in processing facial expression.

The paper reports four visual half-field experiments on the recognition of schematic faces whose emotional expression varied. Experiments I and II tested accuracy of recognition in a match-to-sample task. The results confirmed an overall left visual-field superiority in face recognition, but an analysis of a subset of the stimuli indicated that the direction and magnitude of the perceptual asymmetry depend upon the sign of the emotional expression. A replot of the results based on direct scaling of emotional expression (Experiment III) revealed an asymmetry gradient shifting from a left visual

Infants' acquisition of spatiotemporal expectations.

The microdevelopment of infants' visual expectations was examined by analysis of the eye movements that 80 three-month-old human infants made during interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of an alternating picture sequence. For comparison, identical eye movement data were gathered from 10 infants who watched an irregular sequence. Shifts during ISIs were exhibited by all infants and occurred on 48% of all trials. Initially, infants' ISI shifts repeated saccades that had successfully located the preceding picture; during the course of the alternating session, repetitive saccades declined while alternat

Intentional gaze shift to neglected space: a compensatory strategy during recovery after unilateral spatial neglect.

Unilateral spatial neglect is a common neurological syndrome following predominantly right hemispheric stroke. While most patients lack insight into their neglect behaviour and do not initiate compensatory behaviours in the early recovery phase, some patients recognize it and start to pay attention towards the neglected space. We aimed to characterize visual attention capacity in patients with unilateral spatial neglect with specific focus on cortical processes underlying compensatory gaze shift towards the neglected space during the recovery process. Based on the Behavioural Inattention Test

Objective assessment of image quality. II. Fisher information, Fourier crosstalk, and figures of merit for task performance.

Figures of merit for image quality are derived on the basis of the performance of mathematical observers on specific detection and estimation tasks. The tasks include detection of a known signal superimposed on a known background, detection of a known signal on a random background, estimation of Fourier coefficients of the object, and estimation of the integral of the object over a specified region of interest. The chosen observer for the detection tasks is the ideal linear discriminant, which we call the Hotelling observer. The figures of merit are based on the Fisher information matrix relev

Unsupervised Hybrid Deep Feature Encoder for Robust Feature Learning from Resting-State EEG Data.

EEG classification is a challenging task due to the nonstationary nature of EEG data and the covariance shift induced by cross-subject variance. Recently, various machine learning and deep learning models have been developed to learn robust features for inter-subject EEG classification tasks. However, current existing models are designed based on active task-related EEG, with a lack of investigation into learning robust feature representation from resting-state EEG data. Given the differences in the nature of brain activities captured by resting-state and active task-related EEG, existing mode
