Tumour vascularity has been proposed as a prognostic indicator for a number of solid tumours. In these respects the situation is unclear for cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM). Intracellular calcium plays an important role in the regulation of Cl- reabsorption in the ascending thin limb of Henle's loop (ATL). To elucidate the cytosolic Ca2+ dynamics in the ATL, intracellular Ca2+ concentration activity ([Ca2+]i) was measured in the in vitro microperfused hamster ATL using fura 2. A 59-year-old woman has had persistent microscopic hematuria for 10 years. A few days after the onset of upper respiratory tract infection, edema and severe proteinuria appeared. In renal biopsy, an electron micrograph revealed electron dense deposits in the subepithelial regions with diffuse thinning of the glomerular basement membrane. These glomerular findings were compatible with thin basement membrane syndrome associated with membranous nephropathy. On the basis of our review of the literature, the association of these two diseases seems to be very rare.

A thin-layer chromatographic screening procedure for some basic, neutral and acidic drugs was developed using 3 ml of horse plasma. Chloroform-2-propanol (95:5, v/v) was used as the extraction solvent. The drugs were identified by a high-performance thin-layer chromatographic plate and spraying successively with some detection reagents. In this study, the extraction recovery rates and the detection limits were determined at the same time.

Hemoglobin variants can be successfully identified in cord blood samples. The methods most commonly used include cellulose acetate (CAC) and citrate agar (CAG) electrophoresis. Recently thin layer isoelectric focusing (TLIF) has been shown to be an excellent method for identifying hemoglobin variants. A rapid thin-layer densitometric method for the quantitative determination of salicylic acid and its metabolites in urine or plasma is described. The method is specific and very sensitive. Nanogram quantities of salicylic acid and its metabolites, both free and conjugated, may be estimated. Known metabolites, as well as the newly described gentisuric acid, were estimated quantitatively in urine from a patient treated with aspirin.
