Comparative antibacterial and antifungal activities of sulfur nanoparticles capped with chitosan.

The antimicrobial activity of sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) was compared with elemental sulfur and sulfur-containing salts (sodium thiosulfate and sodium metabisulfite) against bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi (Aspergillus flavus, Candida albicans) using the paper disc, broth microdilution, and time-kill assay methods. The results of the paper disc and MIC tests showed stronger antimicrobial activity of SNPs compared to the elemental sulfur and sulfur-containing salts. SNPs showed more potent activity against bacteria than fungi. Among the test microorganisms, E. coli

Investigation of the toxicity of common oxidants used in advanced oxidation processes and their quenching agents.

The inhibitory effect of commonly known oxidants and their quenching agents was investigated by employing a battery of toxicity tests. Hydrogen peroxide toxicity could be effectively eliminated by the enzyme catalase, whereas sodium thiosulfate and ascorbic acid were recommended as suitable quenching agents for the removal of the oxidants persulfate and peroxymonosulfate in the Vibrio fischeri bioassays. None of the studied quenching agents was found to be suitable for persulfate and peroxymonosulfate in the Daphnia magna bioassays since high inhibitory effects were obtained for both oxidants.

Calcinosis cutis in autoimmune connective tissue diseases.

Calcinosis cutis is a chronic condition involving insoluble calcified deposits of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It is commonly associated with autoimmune connective tissue diseases and can be a source of pain and functional disability. The likelihood of developing calcinosis varies among the autoimmune connective tissue diseases, with systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis being the most commonly associated. Identification of therapy for this challenging disorder has been hampered by a paucity of large controlled trials. Although there is no uniformly effective treatment for calcinosis cut

Phosphonioalkylthiosulfate zwitterions--new masked thiol ligands for the formation of cationic functionalised gold nanoparticles.

We report the synthesis and structural characterisation of a new family of stable phosphonioalkylthiosulfate zwitterions, R3P+ (CH2)nS2O3- (R = Ph or Bu, n = 3,4,6, 8 or 10) which behave as cationic masked thiolate ligands with applications in the functionalisation of gold nanoparticles, having potential as new diagnostic biorecognition systems. The ligands were prepared by treatment of omega-bromoalkylphosphonium salts with sodium thiosulfate. The crystal and molecular structures of the zwitterions (R = Ph, n = 3) and (R = Bu, n = 3) were determined. A series of phosphonioalkanethiolate-cappe

Contact dermatitis in a woodworker.

Woods are capable of causing allergic or irritant contact dermatitis which typically occurs on the exposed areas of the arms, face, and neck. The allergens found in woods include quinones, stilbenes, phenols, and terpenes. We report an 84-year-old woodworker who developed allergic contact dermatitis from Bolivian rosewood and Cocobolo wood. The patient was patch-tested using the North American Contact Dermatitis Group Standard Tray; 2,6 dimethoxyl 1,4 benzoquinone; and wood that he had been exposed to on a regular basis. Positive patch test reactions occurred to methyldibromo glutaronitrile ph

Dental gold alloys and contact hypersensitivity.

A total of 172 patients referred to the Norwegian National Adverse Reaction Group were patch-tested with a dental series. Of these, 25% showed a positive reaction to gold sodium thiosulfate or potassium dicyanoaurate. There was a statistically significant correlation (p=0.0019) between the presence of dental gold and a positive patch test to gold. There was a statistically significant correlation between ear piercing and a positive patch test to gold (p=0.04). In most cases, we did not find clinical correlates to positive patch tests to gold. 2 patients with objective and subjective oral/perio

[Toxicity of sodium nitroprusside (author's transl)].

The mode of breakdown of sodium nitroprusside (NPN) is described and the fact is pointed out that cyanide is formed during the process. The main mode of detoxication leads to the production of thiocyanate. Potential effects of cyanide formation are: blocking of cytochrome oxidase and carbonic anhydrase and cyanmethaemoglobin. The clinical features of NPN poisoning are reviewed. The importance of preventing NPN poisoning by strictly adhering to the maximun doses (1.5mg/kg bodyweight) is emphasized. Anti-dose are; injections of hydroxycobalamin (22.4 mg/mg NPN) and sodium thiosulfate (5.0 mg/mg

Pufferfish (Tetraodon cutcutia) Sampled from a Freshwater River Serves as an Intermediate Reservoir of a Sucrose Nonfermenting Variant of Vibrio cholerae PS-4.

We describe the genomic characteristics of Vibrio cholerae strain PS-4 that is unable to ferment sucrose on a thiosulfate citrate bile salt sucrose (TCBS) agar medium. This bacterium was isolated from the skin mucus of a freshwater pufferfish. The genome of strain PS-4 was sequenced to understand the sucrose nonfermenting phenotype. The gene encoding the sucrose-specific phosphotransferase system IIB (sucR) was absent, resulting in the defective sucrose fermenting phenotype. In contrast, genes encoding the glucose-specific transport system IIB (ptsG) and fructose-specific transport system IIB

In vitro and in vivo comparison of sulfur donors as antidotes to acute cyanide intoxication.

Antidotes for cyanide (CN) intoxication include the use of sulfane sulfur donors (SSDs), such as thiosulfate, which increase the conversion of CN to thiocyanate by the enzyme rhodanese. To develop pretreatments that might be useful against CN, SSDs with greater lipophilicity than thiosulfate were synthesized and assessed. The ability of SSDs to protect mice against 2LD50 of sodium cyanide (NaCN) administered either 15 or 60 min following administration of an SSD was assessed. To study the mechanism of action of the SSD, the candidate compounds were examined in vitro for their effect on rhodane

Medical interventions for the prevention of platinum-induced hearing loss in children with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Platinum-based therapy, including cisplatin, carboplatin, oxaliplatin or a combination of these, is used to treat a variety of paediatric malignancies. One of the most significant adverse effects is the occurrence of hearing loss or ototoxicity. In an effort to prevent this ototoxicity, different otoprotective medical interventions have been studied. This review is the third update of a previously published Cochrane Review. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of medical interventions to prevent hearing loss and to determine possible effects of these interventions on antitumour effi

Penile gangrene due to calciphylaxis: a multidisciplinary approach to a complex clinical challenge.

Penile calciphylaxis is a rare but clinically challenging condition to manage. While multiple treatment options have been proposed, the underlying evidence is anecdotal, and the overall prognosis remains extremely poor. We describe the case of a patient who underwent urgent debridement of a suspected gangrenous penile tip, who was intraoperatively found to have penile calciphylaxis. The necrosis progressed and the patient had a glans amputation. A non-healing wound developed, requiring reconstruction with two skin grafts using foreskin by the plastic and reconstructive surgical unit. The patie

Allergic contact dermatitis: patch testing results at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Patch testing is an important diagnostic tool commonly used to identify allergens responsible for allergic contact dermatitis, especially in cases where the diagnosis is not clearly apparent. The authors report the patch test results from 2004-2008 and compare the results with the North American Contact Dermatitis Group and Mayo Clinic. Four hundred thirty-four patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis underwent standardized patch testing with a tray consisting of 50 allergens at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Two hundred ninety patients (66.8%) had positive reactions to at least one al

Dental gold alloys and contact allergy.

Contact allergy to gold as demonstrated by patch testing is very common among patients with eczematous disease and seems to be even more frequent among patients with complaints from the oral cavity. There is a positive correlation between gold allergy and the presence of dental gold. Gold allergy is often found in patients with non-specific stomatitides as well as in those with lichenoid reactions or with only subjective symptoms from the oral cavity. The therapeutic effect of substituting other dental materials for gold alloys is conspicuous in casuistic reports but less impressive in larger

System evaluation and microbial analysis of a sulfur cycle-based wastewater treatment process for Co-treatment of simple wet flue gas desulfurization wastes with freshwater sewage.

A sulfur cycle-based wastewater treatment process, namely the Sulfate reduction, Autotrophic denitrification and Nitrification Integrated process (SANI(®) process) has been recently developed for organics and nitrogen removal with 90% sludge minimization and 35% energy reduction in the biological treatment of saline sewage from seawater toilet flushing practice in Hong Kong. In this study, sulfate- and sulfite-rich wastes from simple wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) were considered as a potential low-cost sulfur source to achieve beneficial co-treatment with non-saline (freshwater) sewage i

Nitric oxide (NO) stimulates gonadotropin secretion in vitro through a calcium-dependent, cGMP-independent mechanism.

In the last few years, nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as an important intra- and intracellular messenger involved in the control of hypothalamic-pituitary function. The present experiments were undertaken in order to evaluate the pituitary component in the modulatory action of NO on gonadotropin secretion, as well as the second messenger pathway(s) involved. In a first step, we assessed LH and FSH secretion by hemipituitaries incubated in the presence of increasing concentrations of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a potent NO donor, and cyclic guanosin monophosphate (cGMP), the second messenger for

Effective Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization in chromite ore processing residue (COPR) contaminated soils by ferrous sulfate and digestate: A comparative investigation with typical reducing agents.

Chemical reduction combined with microbial stabilization is a green and efficient method for the remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contaminated soil. In this study, the combination of ferrous sulfate with kitchen waste digestate was applied to reduce and immobilize Cr(VI) in chromite ore processing residue (COPR) contaminated soils, and systematically evaluated the remediation performance of Cr(VI) compared with several typical reducing agents (i.e., ferrous sulfate, zero valent iron, sodium thiosulfate, ferrous sulfide, and calcium polysulfide). The results showed that the combinati

Progress in bioleaching: fundamentals and mechanisms of microbial metal sulfide oxidation - part A.

Bioleaching of metal sulfides is performed by diverse microorganisms. The dissolution of metal sulfides occurs via two chemical pathways, either the thiosulfate or the polysulfide pathway. These are determined by the metal sulfides' mineralogy and their acid solubility. The microbial cell enables metal sulfide dissolution via oxidation of iron(II) ions and inorganic sulfur compounds. Thereby, the metal sulfide attacking agents iron(III) ions and protons are generated. Cells are active either in a planktonic state or attached to the mineral surface, forming biofilms. This review, as an update o
