Prosthodontists often assess crown margins clinically and radiographically. However, judging an open crown margin clinically is difficult, and their radiographic assessment is controversial. The objective of this study was to investigate factors influencing interpretation of crown margins to optimize their assessment. Nine plastic KaVo model teeth were divided into three groups (n = 3 per group), and each group received a different margin design (slanted buccal or lingual, concave coronal or convex, 0.7 mm or 1 mm finish line). Zirconia crowns were fabricated, and preparations were exposed to

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the influence of two types of glass ionomer-based luting agent on the clinical performance of metal-free zirconia crowns.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty participants received two full crown restorations in either anterior or posterior teeth, in a split-mouth design. After tooth preparation, impressions with addition-cured silicone were made and casts were obtained. The casts were scanned and 3Y-TZP zirconia copings (Ceramill ZI - Amann Girrbach) were milled using a CAD/CAM system. Glass ceramic (IPS E.max Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent) was used to create the crown sha

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of varying ferrule height and distribution on the fatigue resistance and fracture strength of endodontically treated premolars.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: Thirty-two extracted human premolars were endodontically treated and prepared to receive all-ceramic crowns. Teeth were randomly divided into two groups. The occluso-cervical height was reduced to 2 mm and 4 mm for the 1st and 2nd groups, respectively. According to the ferrule distribution, samples in each group were randomly divided into two subgroups with inadequate ferrule on 1 or 2 proximal walls, respective

BACKGROUND: In cases of infraoccluded primary molars associated with agenesis of premolars, any treatment plan occasionally includes retention of the primary teeth for space preservation and future implant placement if needed. In these cases, building up the crowns to the occlusal line is necessary to prevent various clinical problems. The present case report describes in detail a novel but simple clinical approach for retention and building up of the crown of infraoccluded primary molars.
CASE REPORT/TECHNIQUE PRESENTATION: The technique is presented in a 14-year-old girl with nine missing p

The purpose of this article is to identify the incidence of complications and the most common complications associated with single crowns, fixed partial dentures, all-ceramic crowns, resin-bonded prostheses, and posts and cores. A Medline and an extensive hand search were performed on English-language publications covering the last 50 years. The searches focused on publications that contained clinical data regarding success/failure/complications. Within each type of prosthesis, raw data were combined from multiple studies and mean values calculated to determine what trends were noted in the st

An open apices tooth is among the rare types of traumatic dental injuries is horizontal root fracture. Many factors may affect the treatment and prognosis of root fractures, like the time between trauma and treatment, degree of dislocation and mobility, stage of tooth development, fracture site, and patient's age. This case presents a horizontal root fracture of a maxillary central incisor in an 8-year-old boy. The tooth was considered for extraction due to excessive mobility and deep probing depth, but the patient's parents refused to extract the tooth. After one year, during the follow-up ex

The fate of developing tooth buds located in relation to mandibular fractures was investigated in three infancy cases. Three infants, 2 girls and a boy, aged from 1 year and 5-months old to 2 years and 6-months old, were treated for dislocated mandibular fracture in the symphyseal region by manual reduction and fixation with a thermoforming splint and circumferential wiring under general anesthesia. Fracture healing was uneventful in all cases. A few years later, no obvious deformity of the jaw or malocclusion was observed; however, malformation of the crown was found in one of the permanent t

CONTEXT: Dental caries remains a leading cause of early tooth loss in children, often necessitating full coronal restorations. With the rising demand for esthetic restorations, preformed zirconia and the newly introduced Bioflx crowns have emerged as alternatives to stainless steel crowns. However, their effect on the antagonistic wear of primary teeth remains underexplored.
AIMS: To evaluate and compare the wear of primary natural teeth when opposed by two preformed aesthetic crowns, Zirconia and Bioflex, against natural primary teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty primary teeth and 40 crow

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the impact of artifacts generated by metal crowns on the detection of proximal caries lesions in teeth at various distances using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Additionally, the diagnostic impacts of tube current and metal artifact reduction (MAR) were investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty teeth were arranged within 10 phantoms, each containing 1 first premolar, 1 second premolar, and 1 second molar. A sound first molar (for the control group) or a tooth with a metal crown was placed. Of the 60 proximal surfaces evaluated, 15 were sound and 45 exhib

OBJECTIVES: Although minimally and noninvasive caries management are advocated in pediatric dentistry, extensive caries progression often requires endodontic treatment followed by crowning of the tooth. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the success of esthetic preformed zirconia crowns (PZCs) compared to the standard preformed metal crowns (PMCs) after pulpotomy in primary molars retrospectively.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Patients' digital records in a specialized pediatric clinic in Germany were analyzed to include 2- to 9-year-olds, who had received one or more PMCs or PZCs after a pu

Full ceramic restorations are associated with metal free post and core prosthodontics for teeth with seriously destroyed clinical crowns. Using custom made zirconium-dioxide post and cores can be flattering not only to give a good aesthetic result, but also to provide excellent retention. As none of the post systems stands all demands, prudent planning is mandatory. Our paper deals with favourable and unfavourable conditions as well as common causes of failures of post and core restorations. We took morphological, esthetical and functional considerations that can help to achieve the best resul

Invasive cervical resorption is a relatively uncommon form of external root resorption that may lead to tooth loss. This article presents the clinical and radiologic diagnoses and treatment modalities of invasive cervical resorption in 2 patients. In the first case, we did a slow orthodontic forced eruption to make the bone grow coronally. After 6 months, the tooth was extracted and an immediate implant was placed. Eight months later a zirconia crown was cemented. In the second case, we performed root canal treatment followed by a composite reconstruction of the defect. These 2 cases illustrat

Dens invaginatus (DI) often causes dysmorphic changes in both the crown and root. This case report presents a complicated type 3a DI in a maxillary lateral incisor with labial talon cusp and root bifurcation. Although lingual talon cusp is common in maxillary lateral incisor, labial talon cusp is rare. An auxiliary palatal root in maxillary lateral incisor is also unusual. No such case involving all three variations has been described in the literature. The DI was classified as type B4 according to Schulze and Brand, as it involved division of pulp and root. DI was managed by orthograde MTA, r

Talon cusp is an uncommon anomaly seen both in primary and permanent dentition. In most instances they are associated with other clinical problems such as occlusal interferences, poor esthetics and caries susceptibility. Management of such instances requires a comprehensive knowledge of the clinical entity as well as the problems associated with it. Here, we present two cases of talon cusps.
