A Comparison of Computed Tomographic, Radiographic, Gross and Histological, Dental, and Alveolar Findings in 30 Abnormal Cheek Teeth from Equine Cadavers.

BACKGROUND: Equine cheek teeth disorders, especially pulpar/apical infections, can have very serious consequences due to the frequent extension of infection to the supporting bones and/or adjacent paranasal sinuses. Limited studies have assessed the accuracy of computed tomographic (CT) imaging in the diagnosis of these disorders, and no study has directly compared imaging and pathological findings of the alveoli of diseased equine cheek teeth. OBJECTIVE: To validate the accuracy of CT and radiographic imaging of cheek teeth disorders by comparing CT and radiographic imaging, gross and histol

Sports dentistry--what's it all about?

UNLABELLED: This paper provides an overview of dental conditions that commonly affect individuals competing in all levels of sport. Athletes represent a group of individuals who possess specific risk factors for various dental diseases and related injuries. These patients are at greater risk of dental caries, dental erosion and traumatic dental injuries. Therefore, a clear understanding of these conditions is vital for those practitioners who are involved in the dental care of these patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The early diagnosis and management of dental conditions that affect athletes will

Genetic variants in pachyonychia congenita-associated keratins increase susceptibility to tooth decay.

Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a cutaneous disorder primarily characterized by nail dystrophy and painful palmoplantar keratoderma. PC is caused by mutations in KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16, and KRT17, a set of keratin genes expressed in the nail bed, palmoplantar epidermis, oral mucosal epithelium, hair follicle and sweat gland. RNA-seq analysis revealed that all PC-associated keratins (except for Krt6c that does exist in the mouse genome) are expressed in the mouse enamel organ. We further demonstrated that these keratins are produced by ameloblasts and are incorporated into mature human ename

Effect of long-acting β2-agonist and corticosteroid combination treatment on parotid glands of rats (histological and immunohistochemical study).

BACKGROUND: Bronchial asthma is a common chronic condition frequently managed with corticosteroids, β2 receptor agonists, or their combination. While these therapies effectively control respiratory symptoms, emerging evidence suggests they may adversely affect oral and salivary gland health. However, most existing studies focus on inhalation-related tooth erosion or xerostomia, with limited histological evidence on glandular changes. This study uniquely investigates the direct impact of combination therapy of salmeterol and fluticasone propionate on the parotid glands using histological and im…

Silencing of Ac45 Simultaneously Inhibits Osteoclast-Mediated Bone Resorption and Attenuates Dendritic Cell-Mediated Inflammation through Impairing Acidification and Cathepsin K Secretion.

Endodontic disease is characterized by inflammation and destruction of periapical tissues, leading to severe bone resorption and tooth loss. ATP6AP1 (Ac45) has been implicated in human immune diseases, yet the mechanism underlying how Ac45 regulates immune response and reaction in inflammatory diseases remains unknown. We generated endodontic disease mice through bacterial infection as an inflammatory disease model and used adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated Ac45 RNA interference knockdown to study the function of Ac45 in periapical inflammation and bone resorption. We demonstrated that the

Clinical effectiveness of a potassium chloride containing chewing gum in the treatment of hypersensitive teeth.

Dental hypersensitivity has been observed in an increasing number of younger patients over the past few decades. The reasons for this include forced or false tooth-brushing techniques, and abrasions caused by bruxism or orthodontic procedures. The aim of the present study was to assess the possible benefits of a potassium chloride (KCl) containing chewing gum in dental hypersensitivity. The study population consisted of 59 selected university students (age: 25 +/- 4.4 years). Each subject suitable for entry into the study had more than 3 teeth sensitive to thermal stimulation (air stimulus ran

The prevalence of developmental defects of enamel in people with cystic fibrosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Oral health impacts systemic health, individual well-being, and quality of life. It is important to identify conditions that may exacerbate oral disease to aid public health and policy development and promote targeted patient treatment strategies. Developmental defects can increase an individual's risk of dental caries, hypersensitivity, premature tooth wear, erosion, and poor aesthetics. As part of an ongoing study assessing oral health in adults with cystic fibrosis at Cork University Dental School and Hospital, a systematic review of available literature was conducted to assess

Assessing tooth wear progression in non-human primates: a longitudinal study using intraoral scanning technology.

Intraoral scanners are widely used in a clinical setting for orthodontic treatments and tooth restorations, and are also useful for assessing dental wear and pathology progression. In this study, we assess the utility of using an intraoral scanner and associated software for quantifying dental tissue loss in non-human primates. An upper and lower second molar for 31 captive hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) were assessed for dental tissue loss progression, giving a total sample of 62 teeth. The animals are part of the Southwest National Primate Research Center and were all fed the same monke

Investigation of the presence of Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in ancient adult skulls: analyzing data from prehistoric and historical samples through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Historically, the prevalence of caries has undergone significant changes, particularly increasing with the industrialization of sugar consumption. When examining ancient populations, lower caries rates are discovered, attributed in part to dietary factors. These populations consumed abrasive foods, leading to occlusal wear and reduced non-axial occlusal forces, potentially influencing Non-Carious Cervical Lesions (NCCLs). Although some attribute NCCLs to abfraction, the mechanism remains debated. This systematic review aims to evaluate the presence of NCCLs in ancient populations,

A Retrospective Study on the Clinical, Laboratory, and Nutritional Status of Pediatric Epidermolysis Bullosa in a Tertiary Referral Hospital in West Java, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a genodermatosis disease with bullae and erosions of the skin and mucous membrane that can last for a lifetime and decrease quality of life. Oral and gastrointestinal disorders inhibit the patients' ability to achieve optimal nutrition, making the patients prone to infection, leading to prolonged wound healing, and delayed growth and developmental process. However, there has been no research on the clinical, laboratory, and nutritional status of pediatric EB patients in Indonesia. PURPOSE: This study aims to describe the clinical, laboratory, and nutr

The Remineralization of Enamel from Saliva: A Chemical Perspective.

The natural remineralization of enamel is of major importance for oral health. In principle, early erosions (demineralization) induced by acidic beverages and foods as well as initial caries lesions can be covered and remineralized by the deposition of calcium phosphate, i.e., tooth mineral. This remineralization effect is characterized by the presence of calcium and phosphate ions in saliva that form hydroxyapatite on the enamel surface. Although it is apparently a simple crystallization, it turns out that remineralization under in vivo conditions is actually a very complex process. Calcium p
