Enamel-like Polymer-Infiltrated Ceramic Materials for Dental Applications.

Polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) composites are recognized for their mechanical properties, closely resembling natural tooth enamel. However, the low fracture toughness of current PICN materials limits their broader use. This study draws inspiration from the natural enamel rod-sheath architecture to develop bionic PICN composites with an enamel-like structure, enhancing their fracture toughness for dental restorations. By simulating the morphology and arrangement of enamel rods, 3 types of zirconia ceramic scaffolds were designed and manufactured by digital light processing technolog

Obesity, Pocrescophobia and Oral Health.

Oral health plays a crucial role in obesity management. Scientific evidence suggests an association between obesity and oral diseases, including periodontal disease, dental caries, tooth erosion, xerostomia, and dentinal hypersensitivity. Maintaining optimal oral health is essential for obese patients, as compromised dentition or oral discomfort can influence dietary habits. However, managing oral health in obese individuals can be challenging due to anatomical limitations and lifestyle choices. Profound knowledge of obesity and its manifestations, the oral health professionals need to raise a

Residual ridge resorption, lower denture stability and subjective complaints among edentulous individuals.

Residual ridge resorption in the mandible after tooth loss may lead to worsening of complete denture stability and to various subjective complaints. The aim was to evaluate the association between radiologically assessed residual ridge resorption in the mandible, clinically assessed stability of lower complete denture and subjective complaints among elderly denture wearers. The study population consisted of 326 (115 men and 211 women) edentulous subjects aged 60-78years, all of whom were wearing complete dentures in the mandible. Data on subjective complaints were obtained from questionnaires

[Oral health of recreational ecstasy-users].

In a cross-sectional study, dental records of 149 individuals visiting an Academic Dental Clinic in Amsterdam who reported recreational ecstasy use, defined as no more than twice a week, were systematically analyzed and compared to a group of age- and sex-matched non-drug-users. The parameters retrieved from the dental records were decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth-index (DMFT-index), number of endodontically treated teeth, presence of active caries lesions, periodontitis, tooth wear, xerostomia, and self-reported use of oral hygiene devices. Periodontitis, active caries lesions, an…

Scanning electron microscopic description of cellular activity and mineral changes in feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions.

The cellular activity and changes in mineral composition of dental tissues involved in feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions were investigated. Teeth with at least 1 lesion (n = 10) were extracted from 10 different cats that were presented primarily for chronic gingivostomatitis and/or severe periodontal disease. Scanning electron microscopic methods were used to determine the presence of resorptive cells in 8 teeth while 2 teeth were evaluated for pathologic changes in dental mineral composition. Observations were complicated by the presence of organic wear on the dental surfaces, however r

Clinical and Micromorphologic 29-year Results of Posterior Composite Restorations.

Prospective clinical studies of composite restorations revealed their safety and longevity; however, studies did not elucidate the dynamic mechanisms of deterioration caused by fractures and secondary caries. Therefore, the aims of this 29-y controlled study were 1) to follow up on the clinical behavior of posterior composite restorations annually and 2) to compare clinical outcomes with micromorphologic scanning electron microscopy features. After ethical approval, the single-arm study commenced in 1987 with 194 class I or II primary posterior composite restorations with glass ionomer cement

Impact of Tourette's syndrome tics on healing following dental trauma.

The following case report outlines the impact of motor tics linked to Tourette's syndrome on dental development and healing following a dental injury to a maxillary central incisor. Emergency care and splinting of a mobile extruded maxillary left central incisor tooth was carried out at the local dentist on the same day as the dental trauma. A subsequent referral was made to the paediatric dental department for continued mobility of the maxillary central incisor on splint removal approximately 2 weeks later. A clinical and radiographic examination revealed shortened root length and apical root

Oral management of a child with mixed dentition affected by amelogenesis imperfecta.

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a hereditary developmental disorder affecting deposition, calcification or maturation of dental enamel in both the primary and permanent dentitions. Patients usually present tooth sensitivity as well as problems in chewing function and esthetics. In addition, dissatisfaction with the teeth appearance is often found, affecting the patient's social life. Oral rehabilitation of children with primary or mixed dentition is complex, since no definitive treatment can be done during periods of growth and until the end of eruption of the permanent dentition is accomplish

Evaluation of periodontal changes following intra-alveolar prosthesis for maxillary cheek tooth extraction in ponies.

This study investigated the placement of an intra-alveolar prosthesis of bone substitute on gingival/periodontal health in 5 ponies following repulsion of cheek teeth 108 and 208. In each pony, one randomly chosen alveolus was allowed to heal by second intention while the other was filled with a non-resorbable, biocompatible bone substitute. At 6, 12 and 24-months after surgery, both maxillary arches were evaluated for wear abnormalities and for gingival health using a periodontal scoring system. Recorded changes included development of overgrowths on mandibular cheek teeth, widening of maxill

In vivo fluoride profiles at different sites of buccal and lingual enamel surfaces obtained by enamel biopsy of human maxillary first permanent molars in young adults.

Twenty male volunteers, average age 24 years, participated in this study. Specimens were obtained by enamel biopsy using 5 microliters of 0.5 M HClO4 for 30 s. Using a regression curve, comparisons of fluoride concentrations were made at different depths. The fluoride concentrations (mean +/- SE) at a depth of 5 microns were highest in the distobuccal (1698 +/- 136), high in the mesiobuccal (1343 +/- 122), low in the distolingual (1119 +/- 107), and lowest in the mesiolingual sites (819 +/- 78). Of the interior enamels (> or = 10 microns in depth), the distobuccal site (1330 +/- 88 parts/10(6)
