The Liolopidae (Diplostomoidea) are a small family of digeneans that parasitize reptiles and amphibians as adults. Knowledge of intermediate hosts in this family remains scarce, leaving a major gap in the understanding of liolopid biology. To date, the only fully elucidated life cycle is that of Liolope copulans Cohn 1902, a species infecting Asian salamanders, with no other cercarial or metacercarial stages known. This study aimed to identify potential intermediate hosts for Paraharmotrema karinganiense, found in several chelonian species from southeastern Mozambique and South Africa. African

Different populations of hosts and parasites experience distinct seasonality in environmental factors, depending on local-scale biotic and abiotic factors. This can lead to highly heterogeneous disease outcomes across host ranges. Variable seasonality characterizes urogenital schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic trematodes (Schistosoma haematobium). Their intermediate hosts are aquatic Bulinus snails that are highly adapted to extreme rainfall seasonality, undergoing prolonged dormancy yearly. While Bulinus snails have a remarkable capacity for rebounding following

Digenean trematodes are common and abundant in aquatic habitats and their free-living larvae, the cercariae, have recently been recognized as important components of ecosystems in terms of comprising a significant proportion of biomass and in having a potentially strong influence on food web dynamics. One strategy to enhance their transmission success is to produce high numbers of cercariae which are available during the activity peak of the next host. In laboratory experiments with 13 Lymnaea stagnalis snails infected with Trichobilharzia szidati the average daily emergence rate per snail was

INTRODUCTION: The family Liolopidae comprises digenean trematodes parasitizing amphibians and reptiles, although the life cycles and evolutionary history of several taxa remain poorly understood. Species of Sagaratrema are primarily associated with marine elapid snakes from the Indo-West Pacific region; however, Sagaratrema eugari is exceptional because it has previously been reported from non-marine snake hosts. This study aimed to identify S. eugari from the little file snake, Acrochordus granulatus, and to provide its first molecular characterization and phylogenetic assessment.

Infections with Opisthorchis viverrini, Clonorchis sinensis and Schistosoma haematobium are classified as Group 1 biological carcinogens: definitive causes of cancer. These worms are metazoan eukaryotes, unlike the other Group 1 carcinogens including human papilloma virus, hepatitis C virus, and Helicobacter pylori. By contrast, infections with phylogenetic relatives of these helminths, also trematodes of the phylum Platyhelminthes and major human pathogens, are not carcinogenic. These inconsistencies prompt several questions, including how might these infections cause cancer? And why is infec

Schistosomiasis, caused by infections by human blood flukes (Trematoda), continues to disrupt the lives of over 200,000,000 people in over 70 countries, inflicting misery and precluding the individuals' otherwise reasonable expectations of productive lives. Infection requires contact with freshwater in which infected snails (the intermediate hosts of schistosomes) have released cercariae larvae. Habitats suitable for the host snails continue to expand as a consequence of water resource development. No vaccine is available, and resistance has emerged towards the single licensed schistosomicide

Investigations carried out on trematode parasites affecting cattle and buffaloes in Ismailia Governorate revealed a degree of infection with Fasciola sp. attaining 6.95% among the former, and 16.16% among the latter. Concerning Paramphistomum sp. infection, it was 43.83% among cattle and 9% among buffaloes. During these studies, it appeared that cattle or buffaloes having no infection with Fasciola sp. or those being infected with Paramphistomum sp. only proved to harbour Entamoeba bovis trophozoites with a percentage of about 85% in cattle, and 80% among buffaloes. This protozoan parasite was

Polyclonal infections are widespread and provide evidence of facilitation, competition, and neutral interactions between parasite clones, even within the same host-parasite system. The outcome of coinfections is usually assessed by means of parasite infection intensities, while other important fitness-related traits, e.g., larval growth rates, are often ignored. We experimentally infected fish (Salvelinus malma) with different clones of the common trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum and pairs of clones. Clones were identified by microsatellite analysis. Their infectivity and growth rates wi

Gastrointestinal parasites (GIPs) pose a significant threat to wildlife health and biodiversity, impacting reproductive activities, behavior, survival, and population dynamics. Identifying parasitic infections in wild animals can help to mitigate extinction risk and support conservation efforts. This study investigates the prevalence, diversity, and zoonotic risks of GIPs in six large wild mammals in Chitwan National Park, Nepal. Fresh fecal samples were collected between December 2022 and April 2023 and examined using direct wet mount and concentration methods. By analyzing 63 fecal samples:

Pathogens are major drivers of cancer globally and the processes of infection and carcinogenesis unfold over decades making them difficult to observe in human or natural populations. We investigate these hidden dynamics for the foodborne trematode Opisthorchis viverrini, which is a primary cause of biliary cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) and infects 12 million people in Southeast Asia. In tumors from patients exposed to O. viverrini, we find that the earliest chromosomal amplifications carrying driver genes occurred at 30 y old on average, two to four decades before cancer diagnosis, and dispropor

: Life history stages of Pleurogonius malaclemys were investigated in wild populations of the eastern mudsnail ( Ilyanassa obsoleta ) and diamondback terrapin ( Malaclemys terrapin ) in New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island between 2011 and 2015, and laboratory experiments investigating the settling preference of metacercarial cysts of P. malaclemys were conducted. Cysts of P. malaclemys were found on mudsnails on the north and south shores of Long Island, New York and in Rhode Island, approximately 280 km farther north than previously reported. The cysts were found on mudsnails year round,

Field surveys were carried out in the Lismore and Casino area for the presence of fresh water snails potentially responsible for the transmission of trematodes in ruminants. Although the North American snail, Lymnaea columella has previously only been reported from metropolitan areas, large populations of the snail were found east of Lismore. Natural infection with F. hepatica was detected in some of the snails and laboratory studies showed that this snail species was highly susceptible to infection with miracidia of F. hepatica and produced viable metacercariae. Three species of planorbid sna

Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) is an intestinal trematode with no tissue phases in the definitive host that has been extensively used as an experimental model to study the factors that determine resistance against intestinal helminths. In E. caproni infections in mice, interleukin-25 (IL-25) plays a critical role and it is required for the resistance to infection. However, little is known on the factors that determine its production. Primary E. caproni infection in mice is characterized by the development of chronic infections and elevated worm recovery, in relation to a loc

Dicrocoeliasis (Lancet liver fluke disease) is caused by Dicrocoelium dendriticum, a trematode living in bile ducts of sheep, cattle and other mammals including man. Human infection is asymptomatic or mild to moderately severe, but being sporadic or rarely reported. This paper reported zoonotic dicrocoeliasis dendriticum among a farmer's family and his domestic animals. The father and mother were successfully treated with Triclabendazole and the children and animals were successfully treated with Mirazid and Oleo-resin solution of Commiphora molmol respectively.

The Manson's schistosomiasis tumoral form rarely affects the brain. There are only 12 cases prior related with a mean age of 25 years and a male predominance. We describe a 16-year-old Brazilian Northeastern boy with a cerebellar mass lesion. The radiological aspect was considered compatible with glioma and a gross total resection was performed. Microscopic examination disclosed intraparenchymal granulomas surrounding Schistosoma mansoni eggs. The case is compared with the literature findings and some peculiar aspects of this trematode infection are reviewed.

The ectopic deposition of ova of Schistosoma haematobium within the dermis is very rare, even in countries where infection with this trematode is widespread. When it does occur, it usually affects the genital area. We report a patient who developed ectopic genital and extragenital cutaneous involvement 4 months after swimming in Lake Malawi. The lesions appeared sequentially and spread from the genitalia in a caudocephalic manner. Doppler imaging of the pelvic veins did not reveal any anomalous venous drainage to account for the distribution of these lesions.

Centrocestus formosanus is a pathogenic heterophyid trematode traditionally known to infect freshwater teleosts, but increasingly recognized for its expanding range into brackish and coastal ecosystems. This study documents the first natural spillover of C. formosanus into the critically endangered marine euryhaline fish, Chinese bahaba (Bahaba taipingensis), which naturally inhabits both high-salinity seawater and brackish estuaries. A devastating disease outbreak accompanied by mass mortality occurred between November 2025 and January 2026 at an aquaculture base in Panyu, Guangzhou, China. B.
