Modulating the properties and structure of a wheat starch-lauric acid system via modified soy protein isolate.

Modulation of starch digestibility in ternary systems involving starch, lipids, and proteins is an emerging research area. However, native soy protein isolate (SPI) restricts the formation of wheat starch (WS)-lauric acid (LA)-protein complexes because of its rigid globular structure. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of SPI modified via pH-shift (pHS), ultrasound (US), and high-pressure microfluidisation (HPM) on the characteristics and structure of the WS-LA system. The results showed that the WS-LA-protein systems containing modified SPI exhibited increased cooling peak viscosit

Spatiotemporal Distribution, Mechanisms, and Field Efficacy of Tebuconazole Resistance in Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) Populations in Hebei, Henan, and Shandong Provinces, China.

The wheat powdery mildew fungus Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) is a devastating pathogen for wheat production in the core wheat-producing regions of China, including Hebei, Henan, and Shandong provinces. The demethylation inhibitor fungicide tebuconazole has been a cornerstone for Bgt management. However, its intensive and prolonged application has led to the development of resistance, reducing its field efficacy. This study presents findings on the spatiotemporal dynamics of tebuconazole resistance in Bgt populations across these provinces, reveals the resistance mechanisms, and descr

Bread Wheat Anther Culture.

Doubled haploid (DH) technology can rapidly deliver fixed lines for breeding and research purposes, especially in crops like wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In Western Australia, we have developed an anther culture protocol that generates more than 12,000 bread wheat DH lines annually. Key aspects of the protocol include the growth conditions of donor plants, microspore developmental stage, stress pretreatment, induction and regeneration medium and culture conditions. Using controlled environment rooms for donor plant growth is important in Australia, enabling year-round production of high-quali…

Identification of Rht1 for plant height reduction in two wheat mutants and the effects on yield components.

Plant height determines lodging resistance and is closely linked to yield stability in wheat. In this study, we identified two semi-dwarf wheat mutants, designated je0370 and je0344, using the winter wheat cultivar Jing411 as the wild type (WT). Field experiments revealed that the plant height of these two mutants was significantly lower than that of the WT. In contrast, the thousand-grain weight was significantly higher in je0370 but lower in je0344 compared to the WT. Bulk Segregant Analysis (BSA) based on exome capture sequencing indicated that the gene responsible for height reduction is l

Non-Celiac Gluten/Wheat Sensitivity-State of the Art: A Five-Year Narrative Review.

Background: Non-celiac gluten/wheat sensitivity (NCGWS) is a syndrome for which pathogenesis and management remain debated. It is described as a condition characterized by gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms rapidly occurring after gluten ingestion in subjects who have had celiac disease or wheat allergy excluded. To date, the diagnosis of NCGWS is challenging as no universally recognized biomarkers have been yet identified, nor has a predisposing genetic profile been described. However, the research is moving fast, and new data regarding pathogenic pathways, patients' classificatio

Deletion of wheat alpha-gliadins from chromosome 6D improves gluten strength and reduces immunodominant celiac disease epitopes.

Wheat gliadins and glutenins confer valuable end-use characteristics but include amino acid sequences (epitopes) that can elicit celiac disease (CeD) in genetically predisposed individuals. The onset of CeD in these individuals is affected by the amount and duration of the exposure to immunogenic epitopes. Therefore, a reduction of epitopes that result in high immune responses in the majority of CeD patients (immunodominant epitopes) may reduce the incidence of CeD at a population level. We generated gamma radiation-induced deletions encompassing the α-gliadins in each of the three wheat genom

Legume-based rotation enhance long-term soil carbon storage in eastern Oregon dryland wheat systems.

The potential for increasing soil carbon (C) storage in dryland croplands is still under debate, and there is a lack of comprehensive data regarding storage capacity under conservation management practices. In this study, we analyze the potential for sequestration and stabilization by soil minerals in agricultural land in Eastern Oregon when legume-based rotations are incorporated into cereal cropping systems. This study encompasses long-term experiments that compare the traditional conventional tillage (CT) with winter wheat-summer fallow (WW-SF) cropping system to winter wheat (Triticum aest…

Chemical Composition, Antifungal Activity, and Plant-Protective Potential of Rosa damascena Mill. Essential Oil Against Fusarium graminearum.

Fusarium graminearum is a common plant pathogen among cereals worldwide. The application of chemical antifungal compounds is the most frequently used method in controlling F. graminearum. However, its excessive use and the genomic plasticity of the fungal genome lead to increased resistance levels to these chemical antifungal compounds. In this context, plant-derived compounds might play a role in protecting against Fusarium head blight (FHB) and crown rot (CR) as an alternative. In this study, we aimed to examine the antifungal effects of an essential oil obtained from Rosa damascena Mill. on

Modified wheat starch for the development of 3D-printed red propolis gels for dysphagic diets: phenolic content and bioactivities during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion.

This study developed functional foods for dysphagic diets using Brazilian Red Propolis, modified starch, and 3D printing technology. The obtained gels were evaluated in relation to their printability, textures suitable for people with dysphagia, propolis phenolic bioaccessibility and bioactive properties. The gels were formulated using native and Dry Heating Treatment (DHT)-modified wheat starches (2 and 4 h), at 4-10 % concentrations, with propolis (4 %). Lower starch concentrations (≤6 %) led to agglomerates hindering 3D printing, while higher starch concentrations (8-10 %) produced homogene

Investigation of phloem transport of foliar-absorbed Cd in wheat.

The transport pathway of foliar absorbed Cd in wheat has not been clarified. Hydroponically raised wheat seedling stems were steam girdled to disrupt phloem transport, then the leaves were exposed to Cd solutions (40 or 60 mg L-1) containing 20 mg L-1 Rb (a phloem transport indicator) for 16 h. Plants were harvested 7 days later and divided into roots and leaves, while the stem was divided into two parts above and below the girdling location, with phloem sap collected from the upper part. Samples were analyzed for Cd, Rb, Cu, Zn and Mn concentrations; root glutathione concentration was also an

Mitigating lead-induced stress and DNA damage in wheat plant using palm seed-based bio-adsorbent.

Heavy metals (HMs) are metalloids that exhibit biological toxicity to plants. Effective management of HM-contaminated environments is crucial for sustainable plant development. Palm seeds, as agricultural residues with nutritional value, show potential for bioremediation applications. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of air-dried (D) and roasted (R) palm seed powder (PSP) as HMs adsorbents. PSP was used to mitigate lead (Pb) toxicity in wheat and reduce its bioavailability in contaminated soils. PSP contains 33% fibers and 23% carbohydrates, and other constituents. PSP could adsorb cad

Non-Coeliac Wheat Sensitivity: Symptoms in Search of a Mechanism, or a Distinct Well-Defined Clinical Entity? A Narrative Review.

Non-coeliac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) is characterised by gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms following gluten/wheat ingestion in individuals without coeliac disease or wheat allergy but remains controversial due to symptom overlap with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This narrative review aims to provide a comprehensive, critical analysis of NCWS as a clinical and biological entity, examining the evidence for its distinction from related disorders. While self-reported rates are high (often >10%) in the general population, rigorous double-blind, placebo-controlled challenge (DBPCC) s

Combined techniques for revealing the mechanism beneath the inhibition effects of pectin on gluten digestibility using static in vitro gastro-duodenal protocols.

In the current study, how pectin retards the digestibility of wheat gluten was investigated using a static in vitro gastric-duodenal model. The degree of protein hydrolysis was estimated using the o-phthaldialdehyde method, while the in vitro digestograms were mathematically fitted using a single first-order kinetics model. Peptides' profile, free amino acids compositions, gluten-pectin interactions and their effects on enzymatic activities of proteolytic enzymes as well as on the gluten secondary structures under digestive conditions were studied using combined techniques. Results showed that

A review of gluten detoxification in wheat for food applications: approaches, mechanisms, and implications.

With the improved knowledge of gluten-related disorders, especially celiac disease (CD), the market of gluten-free food is growing. However, the current gluten-free diet still presents challenges in terms of nutrition, acceptability, and cost due to the absence of gluten. It is important to note that gluten-related allergies or sensitivities have different underlying causes. And individuals with mild non-celiac gluten disorder symptoms may not necessarily require the same gluten-free treatments. Scientists are actively seeking alternative solutions for these consumers. This review delves into

TavWA1 is critical for wheat growth by modulating cell morphology and arrangement.

Plant growth is determined by the production of cells and initiation of new organs. Exploring genes that control cell number and cell size is of great significance for understanding plant growth regulation. In this study, we characterized two wheat mutants, ah and dl, with abnormal growth. The ah mutant is a naturally occurring variant characterized by severe dwarfism, increased tiller number, and reduced grain length, while the dl mutant is derived from an ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS)-mutagenized population and exhibits smaller grain size and slightly reduced plant height. Unveiling the multifaceted potential of Pseudomonas khavaziana strain SR9: a promising biocontrol agent for wheat crown rot.

Fusarium pseudograminearum, a soil-borne fungus, is the cause of the devastating wheat disease known as wheat crown rot (WCR). The persistence of this pathogen in the soil and crop residues contributes to the increased occurrence and severity of WCR. Therefore, developing effective strategies to prevent and manage WCR is of great importance. In this study, we isolated a bacterial strain, designated as SR9, from the stem of wheat, that exhibited potent antagonistic effects against F. pseudograminearum, as well as the biocontrol efficacy of SR9 on WCR was quantified at 83.99% ± 0.11%. Quantitative Trait Loci Mappings for the Sulfur Utilization Efficiency-Related Traits at the Seedling Stage of Wheat.

BACKGROUND: Sulfur (S) is a vital element for the normal growth and development of plants, performing crucial biological functions in various life processes. METHODS: This study investigated thirteen S utilization efficiency (SUE)-related traits at the seedling stage of wheat using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population. The quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were mapped by genetic mapping. Thirteen S utilization efficiency-related traits were investigated under two hydroponic culture trials with low S (0.1S, T1), moderate S (0.5S, T2), and high S (1.5S, T3) levels, using the wheat RILs. Volatile Organic Compounds Mediate Host Selection of Wheat Midge, Sitodiplosis Mosellana (Géhin) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) between Preanthesis and Postanthesis Stages of Wheat.

The orange wheat blossom midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a significant wheat pest in the Prairie Provinces of Canada and northern regions of the USA. Wheat phenology plays a critical role in wheat midge oviposition. We hypothesized that S. mosellana oviposition behaviour is influenced by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by wheat at two adjacent wheat growth stages: preanthesis and postanthesis. A higher number of S. mosellana eggs laid on preanthesis than postanthesis spikes in an oviposition choice experiment using the susceptible spring wheat culti
