Isolated subacute tuberculous spinal epidural abscess of the cervical spine: a brief report of a special case.

A tuberculous spinal epidural abscess is seen rarely as a late complication of Pott's disease or in immunocompromised patients. Such abscesses in isolation are rare indeed and very uncommon in the developed and developing world. We report a patient with an isolated subacute tuberculous spinal epidural abscess without disc or vertebral involvement and no primary focus or risk factors associated with the development of spinal tuberculosis.

Atypical imaging features of tuberculous spondylitis: case report with literature review.

Spinal tuberculosis in its typical form that shows destruction of two adjacent vertebral bodies and opposing end plates, destruction of the intervening intervertebral disc and a paravertebral or psoas abscess, is easily recognized and readily treated. Atypical tuberculous spondylitis without the above mentioned imaging features, although seen infrequently, has been well documented. We present, in this report, a case of atypical tuberculous spondylitis showing involvement of contiguous lower dorsal vertebral bodies and posterior elements with paravertebral and epidural abscess but with preserve

Spinal blastomycosis: unusual musculoskeletal presentation with literature review.

We report a case of a 41-year-old male who presented to our institution with a large groin mass. CT, MRI and PET imaging was performed and was concerning for a soft tissue abscess likely originating in the lumbar spine. Differential considerations included infection, with atypical infections such as tuberculosis strongly considered. Biopsy revealed fungal elements preliminarily reported as consistent with Cryptococcus neoformans but later revealed to be Blastomyces dermatitidis. The patient responded positively following the introduction of appropriate treatment. This case illustrates the imag

Treatment of Thoracic Tuberculosis Through Posterior Costal Transverse Joint Window: A Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: The surgical treatment of thoracic spinal tuberculosis has garnered enormous interest from researchers toward the development of posterior surgical techniques that have contributed to greater use of the 1-stage posterior approach. This study aims to demonstrate the initial clinical experience of a modified total posterior approach, in which the 1-stage posterior approach preserves the posterior spinal column structure by combining with the endoprosthetic implant fusion for thoracic spinal tuberculosis. METHODS: In this clinical study, we intended to report the initial idea of a mo

Surgical treatment of tuberculous paraparesis in the third trimester: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous paraplegia as a consequence of spinal infiltration in pregnancy is reported to be rare. Analysis of the current literature produces few case studies that report successful outcomes. Delay in diagnosis and treatment may ultimately result in an irreversible neurological deficit. The potential implications of progression are paraplegia and a significant associated morbidity to the fetus if delivered premature. METHODS: Two cases of spinal tuberculosis in pregnancy are reported with description of clinical presentation, neuroradiographic findings and treatment. RESULTS: B

Non traumatic paraparesis: aetiological, clinical and radiological profile.

AIM OF STUDY: To study the aetiological and clinical profile of non traumatic paraparesis and radiological correlation with newer aids of diagnosis like CT scan, MRI. METHODOLOGY: Forty cases of non traumatic paraparesis admitted at Sri Sayaji General Hospital, Baroda were studied. The clinical, laboratory data and radiological features were analyzed. RESULTS: Spinal tuberculosis was commonest cause (30%) of paraparesis followed by acute transverse myelitis (20%) and then by primary spinal cord tumours (10%). Incidence of paraparesis was highest (32.5%) in third decade. Backache (75%), paras

Management of tuberculosis of the spine with neurological complications.

Tuberculosis is still a major cause of spinal compression in the developing countries. In this study 200 patients presenting with neurological lesions secondary to tuberculosis of the spine have been classified according to the Frankel classification and the results evaluated. A combination of surgical decompression and chemotherapy is advocated. The dangers of non-operative treatment are discussed.
