Out of 59 duodenal ulcer (DU) probands and their 199 first-degree relatives Giemsa-staining for the determination of Helicobacter pylori (HP) was performed in 51 probands and 155 relatives. Follow-up of patients operated on for gastric ulcer--137 with selective gastric vagotomy (SGV), pyloroplasty and ulcer excision (1967-1976) and 72 with proximal gastric vagotomy (PGV) and ulcer excision (1974-1984)--was supplemented with data from recent clinical, endoscopic and biopsy studies in 78 of the patients. The effect of 300 mg cimetidine q.i.d. on ulcer healing was studied in a controlled double-blind clinical trial of 71 in-patients with duodenal ulcer. Healing occurred in 48.5% of patients in the cimetidine group after two weeks, and in 20.6% in the placebo group (P less than 0.05). The healing rate was 88% in the cimetidine group at four weeks, 79.4% in the placebo group. Only during the first day was ulcer pain significantly reduced in the cimetidine-treated patients.
