The anatomic splenic flexure of the colon occupies the left renal fossa in patients with agensis or ectopic of the left kidney. On ultrasonic scans, the colon filled with stool or fluid may simulate a kidney or mass. This mass is often comma shaped on the transverse scans and lacks good definition of its inferior margin on longitudinal scans. An evaluation of a patient with only right renal function should combine radiologic techniques with ultrasonography to establish the correct diagnosis.

747 cases of ultrasonic B-scan examinations carried out over 528 patients, in threatened or deranged stage of early gestation, are reported, and this method is hereby recommended in therapeutic check-ups of imminent abortions. Concerning cases of missed abortion it is established on the basis of individual materials and other publications that the ultrasonic technique cannot be presently substituted by any other methods. The application of ultrasonic B-scan for the diagnosis and exclusive diagnosis of hydatidiform mole, ectopic pregnancy and incomplete abortions is discussed.

Investigation of the abdomen by ultrasounds must now be included among routine tools in abdominal diseases. All abdominal organs, with the exception of the intestine with its gas content, are open to investigation with this technique which combines harmlessness and rapidity with its unique possibility of making differential diagnosis possible in structures with different tissue constitution. The limitations are to be sought more in the examiner's interpretational capacities and in the apparatu's limited resolution power rather than in the technique proper.

Fourteen consecutive patients with scrotal swellings were examined to determine the feasibility of a B-scan examination. All 14 cases were correctly diagnosed prior to surgery, the majority being hydroceles. Four representative cases are offered, one of which was a hernia with air-filled intestine.

Ultrasonic fragmentation (USF) can be used to fragment various tissues such as the lens, the vitreous, the iris, and the ciliary body, so that they may be aspirated through a 23-gauge canula. Since the technique was first described in 1973, it has been used in 148 eyes in a variety of conditions with encouraging results. A promising method of ultrasonic diagnostics is compound or multiple scanning. Its application in obstetrics makes it possible to more distinctly define the contours of the structures studied. Results subsequent to an examination of 750 pregnant women showed that by using this method it becomes possible to determine the position of the fetus, biparietal diameter of its head, the size of the placenta, abnormalities in the development of the fetus, etc. The advantages of compound scanning are particularly spectacular in estimating the growth of the fetal head during early periods of gestation.
