Urinary catheters are standard medical devices utilized in both hospital and nursing home settings, but are associated with a high frequency of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). The article highlights the issues of prevention of acute urinary retention after surgery. The authors present results of a study on the efficacy and safety of 1-blockers for the prevention of acute urinary retention after surgery. The results imply that the use of 1-blockers in pre- and postoperative period can significantly reduce the risk of postoperative ischuria, contribute to independent urination after a single urinary catheterization in patients who experience urinary retention, improve the postoperative period and promote recovery of patients.

A wide range of abnormalities in the genito-urinary system predispose to infection and surgical solutions may be appropriate. This review considers the investigation of obstruction and the relationship between urinary infections and renal damage, chronic renal disease, renal abscesses, reflux, calculi, catheterization and instrumentation, the neuropathic bladder and prostatitis as well as the role of antibiotic prophylaxis in urological surgery. Recommendations for the urosurgical management of urinary infection are made.

We evaluated the influence of a Brazilian resolution, published in 2013, that restricts the performing of urinary catheterization to nurses, as opposed to others from different nursing professional categories, on indicators of catheter-associated urinary tract infection in an intensive care unit. Failure to deflate Foley catheters is a rare problem in clinical practice. There are various methods to overcome this problem. This is an experimental study of the commonly used methods. The balloons should never be inflated until rupture to prevent leaving loose fragments. A ureteric catheter or its stylet can be used to deflate the balloon. The balloon can be ruptured with fine needle under ultrasound guidance but it should not have been inflated to more than 50% of its volume to prevent leaving loose fragments in the bladder.

PURPOSE: We review the urological complications in spinal cord injury patients treated with suprapubic catheterization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Suprapubic catheterization was used in 44 spinal cord injury patients. Followup ranged from 12 to 150 months (mean 58). The catheters were irrigated weekly and changed every 2 weeks. Patients were followed annually with urodynamic studies and ultrasound.
RESULTS: No patient had renal deterioration, vesicoureteral reflux or bladder carcinoma. The incidences of incontinence, urinary tract infections and calculi were acceptable.
