Introduction: Uveitis is characterized by inflammation of the middle layer of the eye. Its overall incidence is low. Autoimmune diseases and infections are the most common underlying diseases. Out of the autoimmune diseases, juvenile idiopathic arthritis is associated most frequently with uveitis. The topical ophthalmological treatment may fail in a significant proportion of the patients and immunomodulatory therapy may be required. Aim and method: In a retrospective study, data of 33 children diagnosed and treated with uveitis at the Department of Pediatrics and Ophthalmology, University of P…

The uveitides are a heterogenous group of ocular inflammatory disorders that account for the third highest cause of blindness worldwide, responsible for 5-10% of visual impairment globally. Up to 35% of patients with uveitis can suffer significant vision loss. To prevent irreversible structural damage and blindness, it is important that the diagnosis and commencement of appropriate therapy occurs promptly. Management includes topical and systemic corticosteroid therapy and conventional immunomodulatory agents, including methotrexate, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil and cyclosporin. Signifi…

Purpose: To investigate the use of letermovir 480 mg daily for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-associated uveitis (AU).Methods: Retrospective case series of CMV-AU patients on letermovir. Results: Six eyes of five patients (mean age 54 years) were included. Mean follow-up time was 10 months. Four patients had CMV anterior uveitis and one patient had bilateral CMV retinitis. All were treated initially with valganciclovir 900 mg twice daily. Transition to letermovir was due to cytopenias (n = 3), transaminitis (n = 1), and persistent inflammation on valganciclovir (n = 1). At the initiatio…

Uveitis is a sight-threatening disease. Up to 35% of patients may have impaired vision. Inflammation of the uvea tissue has more than 60 etiologies. Previous reports have shown that 20-40% of uveitis cases were noninfectious. Some of them may be associated with systemic rheumatological and autoimmune diseases but some may affect the eyes only. The epidemiology and clinical situations of some specific uveitis entities vary worldwide because they are influenced by genetic, ethnic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. The Asia-Pacific region comprises more than 30 countries. Epidemiology and…

The syndrome of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) is a multisystemic autoimmune disorder that may occur in response to various environmental triggers, including drugs and microbial pathogens. Evidence exists of HLA antigen-related genetic predisposition to developing TINU. The resulting inflammation affects chiefly the ocular uvea and renal tubules, although other organs may be involved. TINU is uncommon; only about 200 cases are on record since its original description 40 years ago, although it is possible that new ones are no longer being reported. Although its incidence is hig…

Uveitis is defined as intraocular inflammation. It is an extraarticular manifestation of many forms of joint disease, which include spondyloarthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and Behçet's disease. Rheumatologists may be asked to consult on the ophthalmologic care of patients with uveitis in order to identify an associated systemic illness. Diagnoses such as spondyloarthritis, sarcoidosis, and interstitial nephritis with uveitis are frequently overlooked by referring ophthalmologists. Alternatively, rheumatologists may be asked to help manage the patient's immunosuppression, including bi…

Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma (NXG) is a chronic, progressive non-Langerhans histiocytic granulomatous disease. While case reports describing periorbital involvement of NXG are frequent, only a few case reports describing ocular involvement, such as scleritis and uveitis, exist. Herein, we present a case presenting initially as bilateral anterior and posterior scleritis, as well as a chronic bilateral granulomatous panuveitis, and discuss the immunosuppressant options that should be considered for this disease with protean manifestations.

PURPOSE: The incidence of syphilis appears to be increasing in recent years. Although any structure of the eye can be involved in syphilis, isolated unilateral anterior uveitis as an initial sign of the disease is rare. We report a case of ocular syphilis presenting as a mild unilateral, nongranulomatous, anterior uveitis in an otherwise asymptomatic patient.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old white male patient presented with a 3-day history of mildly reduced vision, photophobia, and pain in his left eye. The patient denied prior occurrences, and no contributing ocular or medical history was elicite…

INTRODUCTION: Syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum agent, results in polymorphic and non-specific ocular manifestations. Early diagnosis and institution of individualized treatment play a large role in the prognosis. The increase in syphilis over the past several years requires the ophthalmologist to consider this diagnosis in the setting of any intraocular inflammatory involvement.
PURPOSE: To describe epidemiological, clinical and paraclinical features and natural history of syphilitic uveitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective, descriptive and non-comparative study of a series of pat…

The association of uveitis and multiple sclerosis (MS) is less well known than the association between optic neuritis and MS even though MS patients suffer ten times more often from uveitis than the normal population. In this group of patients, intermediate uveitis presenting with periphlebitis and "snowbanks" or "snowballs", as well as granulomatous anterior uveitis play an important role. Simultaneous occurrence of MS and uveitis could be due to the fact that both neural and ocular tissues have the same embryological origin or could be the consequence of an immunological reaction following a…

Current data permit only speculations regarding sex differences in the prevalence of infectious uveitis between women and men because uveitis case surveys do not uniformly report gender data. Differences in prevalence that are reported in the literature could relate to simple differences in the number of women and men at risk for infection or to biological differences between men and women. Compared to other types of uveitis, infectious uveitis may be directly related to occupational exposures or sexual behaviors, which differ between women and men, and may mask actual biological differences i…
