Alloplastic spermatocele implants were used for 11 infertile men with bilateral congenital absent vas. Successful recovery of spermatozoa from the prosthesis was obtained in 8 cases for periods up to 4 months after the operation. Single aspirations showed 200,000 to 30 million spermatozoa, and the aspirated volume varied between 0.4 and 1.0 ml. Artificial insemination of the wife was done at the time of ovulation, but no pregnancy has been achieved yet. In only 3 cases the aspirated fluid did not show spermatozoa, which might be due to occlusion of the vasa efferentia or ductus epididymis.

The management of 2 cases of a rare condition previously labelled idiopathic pelvic fibrosis is described. Two cases reported previously are reviewed. The unusual histologic and radiologic features are emphasized, and the differences between this condition and idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis are summarized. Etiologic features, including the possible role of previous pelvic infection, drug-induced hypersensitivity and autoimmunity, are discussed. We believe that disease originating in the vas may be the source of this unusual fibrotic process.

Fanconi's anemia is an autosomal recessive disease, the main feature being pancytopenia secondary to bone-marrow hypoplasia. However, multiple congenital abnormalities may be encountered, urogenital malformations being common. We describe a patient with solitary crossed renal ectopia, vesicoureteric reflux, hypospadias, and unilateral undescended testis with absent vas deferens.

Our initial clinical experience with laparoscopic varicocele ligation has shown this to be an effective technique. It is less invasive and allows a magnified view of spermatic cord vasculature away from the vas deferens. The long-term efficacy and recurrence rate after laparoscopic varicocele ligation need further evaluation.

The spermatic ducts (vasa deferentia) of 235 otters (Lutra lutra) found dead between 1999 and 2012 in Sweden were examined for presence of paraductular cysts. Single or multiple elongated uni- or bilateral cysts parallel to the spermatic duct were noted in 72% of the examined males. The cysts were adjacent to, but did not communicate with the lumen of the spermatic duct, and were usually located within a few centimeters of the testis and epididymis. INTRODUCTION: We have recently designed a novel surgical instrument, a double-ringed clamp (Moon's clamp), with which the vas deferens can be located and isolated both simply and safely while minimizing unnecessary injury to the surrounding tissue.

A variant of microsurgical invagination vasoepididymostomy (patent of the Russian Federation N 2195205, 2002) was developed in 2001-2004 in experiment on 21 mongrel dogs. Fourteen dogs have undergone 22 vasoepididymostomies according to the novel technique and 5 control vasoepididymoanastomoses side-to-side. Apart from cystic fibrosis, mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene are also involved in congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD).
