The effect of motor and cognitive placebos on the serial reaction time task.

Motor learning is a key component of human motor functions. Repeated practice is essential to gain proficiency over time but may induce fatigue. The aim of this study was to determine whether motor performance and motor learning (as assessed with the serial reaction time task, SRTT) and perceived fatigability (as assessed with subjective scales) are improved after two types of placebo interventions (motor and cognitive). A total of 90 healthy volunteers performed the SRTT with the right hand in three sessions (baseline, training and final). Before the training and the final session, one group

Novel analogous tasks to assess material-specific memory impairments associated with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Episodic memory tasks employing verbal material are generally sensitive to material-specific memory impairments in individuals with left mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE), whereas visuospatial memory tasks are less consistently failed by individuals with right mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (RTLE). A limitation of these tasks is the possibility for the examinee to use verbalization strategies when tested with visuospatial stimuli, and visualization strategies with verbal material. In this study, we aimed to develop two new analogous computerized recognition tasks to identify material-specifi

The contribution of individual differences in statistical learning to reading and spelling performance in children with and without dyslexia.

Using an individual differences approach in children with and without dyslexia, this study investigated the hypothesized relationship between statistical learning ability and literacy (reading and spelling) skills. We examined the clinical relevance of statistical learning (serial reaction time and visual statistical learning tasks) by controlling for potential confounds at the participant level (e.g., non-verbal reasoning, attention and phonological skills including rapid automatized naming and phonological short-term memory). A 100 Dutch-speaking 8- to 11-year-old children with and without d

Auditory Biases in Cognitive Assessment: Insights from a Hearing-Loss Simulation for the Screening of Dementia due to Alzheimer's Disease.

Cognitive-screening tests are used to detect pathological changes in mental abilities. Many use orally presented instructions and test items. Hence, hearing loss (HL), whose prevalence increases with age, may bias cognitive-test performance in the target population for the screening of dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. To study the effect of the auditory test format, an impairment-simulation approach was used in normal-hearing listeners to compare performance on the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test, a memory task employed in dementia screening and research, when test items were unprocessed and …

Agenesis of the corpus callosum in Turner's syndrome: report of a case and review of the literature.

Turner's syndrome (TS) is a genetic disorder caused by loss of entire or a substantial part of the X-chromosome, but association with central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities is rarely reported. A 32-year-old female with TS was found to have agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and various clinical features including coarctation of aorta, hypertelorism, small jaw, short and webbed neck, cubitus valgus, and absence of the uterus. Karyotype analysis revealed X monosomy cell line (45, X). There have been only three other cases of TS associated with ACC. High prenatal lethality of TS fetuses wi

A preliminary study of right hemisphere cognitive deficits and impaired social judgments among young people with Asperger syndrome.

Seven children and young adults with definite signs of Asperger syndrome were administered a battery of tests designed to test: intelligence; left and right cerebral hemisphere functioning; ability to discriminate eye gaze; and social judgment. The subjects revealed a non significant tendency to have a higher verbal IQ than visual IQ; and their right hemisphere functioning seemed impaired. They were also poorer at discriminating eye gaze and revealed difficulties in making hypothetical social judgments. The data are considered with reference to Rourke's (1988) work on non-verbal learning disab…

Temporal context discrimination in patients with schizophrenia: associations with auditory hallucinations and negative symptoms.

BACKGROUND: A deficit in remembering the temporal context of events (a type of source memory) has been observed in schizophrenia, and suggested to be associated with positive symptoms. METHODS: In order to investigate memory for temporal context, we administered a list discrimination task to a sample of schizophrenia patients and a sample of healthy controls. Participants were required to learn two lists of mixed high- and low-frequency words separated by 10 min, then to remember whether each word had been presented in the first or in the second list. RESULTS: The number of misattributions t

ADHD May Associate With Reduced Tolerance to Acute Subconcussive Head Impacts: A Pilot Case-Control Intervention Study.

OBJECTIVE: To test our hypothesis that individuals with ADHD would exhibit reduced resiliency to subconcussive head impacts induced by ten soccer headings. METHOD: We conducted a case-control intervention study in 51 adults (20.6 ± 1.7 years old). Cognitive assessment, using ImPACT, and plasma levels of neurofilament-light (NF-L), Tau, glial-fibrillary-acidic protein (GFAP), and ubiquitin-C-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) were measured. RESULTS: Ten controlled soccer headings demonstrated ADHD-specific transient declines in verbal memory function. Ten headings also blunted learning effects in

[Transitory cognitive dysfunction in rolandic epilepsy].

Forty-four patients with rolandic epilepsy (32 boys, 12 girls), aged from 5 to 14 years, were examined in the prospective study during 5 years. Before the antiepileptic treatment, most of patients had transitory cognitive disturbances. There were the impairment of verbal functions, especially verbal intellect, while non-verbal intellect remained intact; dyspraxia, impairment of auditory-speech memory, disturbances of arbitrary regulation and optical-motor coordination. The cognitive impairment was not severe and did not impact on learning of school program. No significant correlations were fou

The neuropsychological profile of infantile Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

It has been shown that children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) exhibit specific cognitive deficits. However, the neuropsychological profile has not yet been fully characterized. In order to control for the contribution of motor impairments as a confounding variable that is usually present when assessing children with muscular pathologies, we compared children with DMD to a group of children with an autoimmune pathology that does not entail either brain or cognitive dysfunction but does imply motor impairment: juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). An extensive neuropsychological evaluati

Boys with Asperger's disorder, exceptional verbal intelligence, tics, and clumsiness.

Five boys with both Asperger's disorder and Tourette syndrome, exceptional verbal intelligence, and clumsiness are reported. Each presented at early elementary school age with a prominent complaint of social difficulties with peers. History was notable for a flapping stereotypy and the neurological examination revealed motor and/or vocal tics and numerous motor soft signs. Highly specialized interests were characteristics. Language prosody and/or pragmatics was impaired. Despite exceptional verbal intelligence, the children were not, according to their teachers and parents, faring well either

Neuropsychological aspects of Marfan syndrome.

We evaluated the neuropsychological status of 13 adults patients with Marfan syndrome. All subjects were administered the same neuropsychological test battery that included nine measures covering a broad range of cognitive abilities such as attention and concentration, learning and memory, and verbal and non-verbal abilities. Compared to a control group of 13 healthy subjects matched for sex, age and verbal intelligence, Marfan patients only performed significantly worse on tests measuring sustained visual attention and visuoconstruction. Although these tests use visual material and depend on

The Computerized Adaptable Test Battery (BMT-i) for Rapid Assessment of Children's Academic Skills and Cognitive Functions: A Validation Study.

Background: Learning disabilities in children are a major public health concern worldwide, having a prevalence of 8%. They are associated with lost social, educational, and ultimately, professional opportunities for individuals. These disabilities are also very costly to governments and raise the issue of the appropriate means of screening. Unfortunately, validated tools for preliminary appraisal of learning and cognitive function in struggling children are presently restricted to specific age ranges and cognitive domains. This study sought to validate a first-line battery for assessment of ac

Selective Procedural Memory Impairment but Preserved Declarative Memory in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), also known as Machado-Joseph disease, is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that affects … c Classification test (WPPCt). SCA3 patients showed normal learning on the declarative Rey Auditory Verbal Learning test (Rey-AVLt). The correlations between the learning measures of the SRTt, WPPCt, and Rey-AVLt tests in SCA3 and controls separately were not significant. These results imply that the cerebellar degeneration in SCA3 causes selective impairment in …

Mental Disorders and Learning Disabilities in Children and Adolescents: Learning Disabilities.

Learning disabilities are estimated to affect 5% to 9% of US children. Risk factors include a family history of learning disabilities, environmental factors during gestation or birth, and social adversity. Individuals with learning disabilities may experience social exclusion and bullying, poor self-image, or underachievement. They may struggle with tasks and in settings that depend on reading, mathematical skills and reasoning, or written and verbal communication. The family physician often is the first to be approached by parents regarding learning delays in children. The initial evaluation

Word learning deficit among Chinese dyslexic children.

The present study examined word learning difficulties in Chinese dyslexic children, readers of a nonalphabetic script. A total of 105 Hong Kong Chinese children were recruited and divided into three groups: Dyslexic (mean age 8;8), CA control (mean age 8;9), and RL control (mean age 6; 11). They were given a word learning task and a familiar word writing task. It was found that the Dyslexic group performed less well than the RL group in learning irregular words over trials but not the regular ones. Error analyses showed that the Dyslexic group made more orthographic and word association errors
