ImportanceSudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is often accompanied by vestibular dysfunction, yet the relationship between patterns of peripheral vestibular organ involvement and hearing prognosis requires systematic evaluation. Clarifying this association is essential for guiding clinical assessment and prognosis.ObjectiveTo explore the prognostic value of vestibular function tests in patients with SSNHL by assessing the functional status of peripheral vestibular receptors.DesignRetrospective cohort study.SettingInpatient departments of Jiaxing Second Hospital and the Hospital of the Ch…

The tangential nucleus is a major part of the avian vestibular nuclear complex, and its principal cells are structurally distinctive neurons participating in the vestibuloocular and vestibulocollic reflexes. After unilateral peripheral vestibular lesion, a behavioral recovery of function defined as vestibular compensation is observed. Because sprouting and hypertrophy of synapses have been reported in other regions of immature animals after central nervous system injury, we investigated whether this also occurs in the vestibular nuclei during compensation. To test this hypothesis, unilateral v

BACKGROUND: Children with hearing impairment are at an increased risk of vestibular disorders. Due to the diagnostic challenges associated with pediatric populations, corresponding assessments are rarely performed, resulting in a lack of prevalence data in Germany. The findings, however, could have significant implications for subsequent diagnostic processes, therapeutic interventions, and preventive measures.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the feasibility of balance diagnostics for children of all age groups and emphasizes the necessity of their routine application in children with heari

AIM: To investigate differences in vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) results with patients suffering from vestibular migraine and healthy people, taking into consideration values of threshold and latency of occurrence of the characteristic wave complex, size of amplitude, and interaural amplitude ratio. According to the results, determine the importance and usefulness of VEMP in vestibular migraine diagnostics.
METHODS: A total number of 62 subjects were included in the study, 32 of them belonging to a group of patients suffering from vestibular migraine (VM), while other 30 were i

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the leading nongenetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss and developmental disabilities. Because there are limited data from studies of vestibular involvement in select groups of children with cCMV, the true frequency of vestibular disorders in cCMV is likely underestimated. Our objective for this study is to determine the prevalence of vestibular, gaze, and balance disorders in a cohort of children with asymptomatic cCMV.
METHODS: Comprehensive vestibular, gaze, and balance assessments were performed in 40 children with asympt

PURPOSE: To review the extent and mechanism of the recovery of vestibular function after sudden, isolated, spontaneous, unilateral loss of most or all peripheral vestibular function - usually called acute vestibular neuritis.
METHODS: Critical review of published literature and personal experience.
RESULTS: The symptoms and signs of acute vestibular neuritis are vertigo, vomiting, nystagmus with ipsiversive slow-phases, ipsiversive lateropulsion and ocular tilt reaction (the static symptoms) and impairment of vestibulo-ocular reflexes from the ipsilesional semicircular canals on impulsive te

Hyperventilation-induced nystagmus test (HINT) is capable of generating a response in 77.2% of cases of acute unilateral vestibulopathy (AUVP); both nystagmus toward the affected side (excitatory pattern) and toward the healthy side (inhibitory pattern) have been described. The aim of the study is to investigate the clinical and prognostic role of the test by evaluating its correlation with vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain. We evaluated 33 AUVP patients by performing the HINT and video head impulse test (V-HIT) during the acute phase and then at 15 and 90 days after the onset of the symptoms

Hyperventilation-induced nystagmus (HVIN) has previously been shown by the senior author to be common in patients with both acoustic neuromas and following resection. The recurrent study's aim was to examine if HVIN was specific for retrocochlear pathology. To test this, the incidence of HVIN in 24 patients with confirmed acoustic neuroma was compared with its incidence in 38 patients with end-organ vestibular disease (defined as a greater than 25% reduction in caloric testing). Hyperventilation was carried out for 90 seconds. The results showed that 58% of the acoustic neuroma group were posi

Background: Age-related vestibular decline frequently accompanies presbycusis, and older adults undergoing cochlear implantation (CI) may be particularly vulnerable to postoperative dizziness due to a reduced compensatory capacity and a higher burden of comorbidities. Although CI is an effective treatment for severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss in the elderly, its impact on vestibular function remains a critical concern. This study aimed to compare pre and postoperative vestibular performance in older patients (≥65 years) versus younger adults undergoing CI in order to identify the r

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of the head rotation test with bowing (B-HRT) in the sitting position in diagnosing lateral semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (LSC-BPPV).
METHODS: The efficacy outcomes of lateralization of 25 patients with LSC-BPPV were prospectively evaluated using B-HRT. Traditional head toration in the supine position (S-HRT) and the bow and lean test were also assessed for comparative effectiveness.
RESULTS: Direction-changing nystagmus was detected in all patients with LSC-BPPV (100%) using B-HRT. The nystagmus direction (geotropic or apogeotro

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are frequently referred to physical therapy for management, but little is known on how reliable therapists are at diagnosing BPPV. The purpose of the study was to examine the agreement between physical therapists in identifying nystagmus and diagnosing BPPV.
METHODS: Thirty-eight individuals with complaints of positional vertigo, 19 from each of 2 clinics (clinics 1 and 2) that specialize in vestibular rehabilitation, had eye movements recorded using video goggles during positioning tests including supine-to-

BACKGROUND: Feedback postural control depends upon information from somatosensation, vision, and the vestibular system that are weighted depending on their relative importance within the central nervous system. Following loss of any sensory component, the weighting changes, e.g., when suffering a vestibular loss, the most common notion is that patients become more dependent on visual cues for maintaining postural control. Dizziness and disequilibrium are common after surgery in schwannoma patients, which could be due to interpretation of the remaining sensory systems involved in feedback-depen

The differential diagnosis of dizziness includes vertigo as well as numerous other causes of faintness or lightheadedness. Vertigo is a common symptom that has diverse causes. Because of uncertainties about the diagnosis, many patients are treated symptomatically without a specific diagnosis being made. Most patients have benign, peripheral (otological) causes for their symptoms. Patients with potentially serious central (neurological) problems are usually identified on history and examination. Many common causes of vertigo, such as benign positional vertigo and migraine, can be successfully d

A force platform technology using bonded strain gauges was developed to analyse postural sway as a function of time. Physiologically, the human body is in a state of balance--independent of the position of head, neck, hip, arms or legs and despite permanent oscillations, as long as the centre of gravity projected onto the base of support falls within a limited area. Some examples demonstrate the principles and interpretation of measurements. The method is clinically appropriate to discover ataxias and to manifest Romberg's sign. The diagnostic scope is extended by including a tilting platform
