City bus seat vibration analysis using 6-axis accelerometer and gyroscope sensors.

This paper analyses different modes and cycles of seat vibration in city buses by analysing acceleration peak magnitudes and their trends and fluctuations in the time domain. The purpose is to find peak vibration modes that exist in the driving patterns of city buses. Analysing peaks in a time series is essential for many applications specifically in vibration analysis because they represent significant events. Using a 6-axis inertial measurement unit device which has accelerometer and gyroscope sensors data were collected from a number of city buses operating. By applying algorithmic filters …

Sonic vibration ameliorates inflammatory diseases via the up-regulation of IL-10.

Sonic vibration (SV), or vibroacoustic therapy, is applied to enhance local and systemic blood circulation and alleviate pain using low-frequency sine wave vibrations. However, there is limited scientific data on the mechanisms through which the benefits are achieved. In this study, we investigated the impact of SV on inflammatory responses by assessing cytokine secretion in both in vivo and in vitro models. After inducing inflammatory responses in mice and macrophages, we studied cytokine expression and the symptoms of inflammatory diseases in response to three frequencies (14, 45, or 90 Hz) …

A novel rat-tail model for studying human finger vibration health effects.

It has been hypothesized that the biodynamic responses of the human finger tissues to vibration are among the major stimuli that cause vibration health effects. Furthermore, the finger contact pressure can alter these effects. It is difficult to test these hypotheses using human subjects or existing animal models. The objective of this study was to develop a new rat-tail vibration model to investigate the combined effects of vibration and contact pressure and to identify their relationships with the biodynamic responses. Physically, the new exposure system was developed by adding a loading dev…

Impacts of whole-body vibration on denervated skeletal-muscle atrophy in rats.

Whole-body vibration has been considered as a countermeasure against muscle atrophy. However, its effects on muscle atrophy are poorly understood. We evaluated the effects of whole-body vibration on denervated skeletal muscle atrophy. Whole-body vibration was performed on rats from Day 15 to 28 after denervation injury. Motor performance was evaluated using an inclined-plane test. Compound muscle action potentials of the tibial nerve were examined. Muscle wet weight and muscle fiber cross-sectional area were measured. Myosin heavy chain isoforms were analyzed in both muscle homogenates and sin…

sEMG and Vibration System Monitoring for Differential Diagnosis in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders.

The stomatognathic system represents an important element of human physiology, constituting a part of the digestive, respiratory, and sensory systems. One of the signs of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can be the formation of vibroacoustic and electromyographic (sEMG) phenomena. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of temporomandibular joint rehabilitation in patients suffering from locking of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articular disc by analysis of vibrations, sEMG registration of masseter muscles, and hypertension of masticatory muscles. In this paper, a new…

Sex-specific response to whole-body vibration training: a randomized controlled trial.

A few studies have indicated that males and females respond differently to whole-body vibration (WBV) training. However, the existing insights are still insufficient and they cannot be transferred to sex-specific practice planning. To evaluate the effect of 5-week WBV training on neuromuscular [countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ)] and cardiovascular [heart rate and blood pressure] data, taking into account sex-specific effects. This is a comparative experimental study including 96 healthy adults, divided into two groups: a WBV group (25 females and 24 males) and a control group (27 fem…

Skull Vibration-Induced Nystagmus Test (SVINT) in Vestibular Migraine and Menière's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine (VM) and Menière's disease (MD) are the two most frequent episodic vertigo apart from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) differential diagnosis for them may be troublesome in the early stages. SVINT is a newly proposed vestibular test, which demonstrated to be fast and reliable in diagnoses above all of peripheral vestibular deficits. METHODS: We retrieved clinical data from two groups of subjects (200 VM and 605 MD), enrolled between 2010 and 2020. Among others, these subjects were included when performing a SVINT. The purpose of the study is to asses

Previous hamstring muscle strain injury alters passive tissue stiffness and vibration sense.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain is one of the most common among sports injuries. A previous history of this injury is considered a strong predictor of recurrent hamstring strain injury. It has been suggested that fascial tissue alters after muscle strain injury. However, the association between previous hamstring strain injury and tissue stiffness and vibration sense detection has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether a previous history of hamstring strain injury affects tissue stiffness and vibration sense in professional soccer players. METHOD: The stiffness (Myoton…

Enhanced Condensation on Liquid-Infused Nanoporous Surfaces by Vibration-Assisted Droplet Sweeping.

Condensation is a universal phenomenon that occurs in nature and industry. Previous studies have used superhydrophobicity and liquid infusion to enable superior liquid repellency due to reduced contact angle hysteresis. However, small condensate droplets remain immobile on condensing surfaces until they grow to the departing size at which the body force can overcome the contact line pinning force. Hence, condensation heat transfer is limited by these remaining droplets that act as thermal barriers. To break these limitations, we introduce vibrational actuation to a slippery liquid-infused nano…

Mechanical vibration does not systematically reduce the tremor in essential tremor patients.

Essential tremor (ET) is a major cause of disability and is not effectively managed in half of the patients. We investigated whether mechanical vibration could reduce tremor in ET by selectively recruiting afferent pathways. We used piezoelectric actuators to deliver vibratory stimuli to the hand and forearm during long trials (4 min), while we monitored the tremor using inertial sensors. We analyzed the effect of four stimulation strategies, including different constant and variable vibration frequencies, in 18 ET patients. Although there was not a clear homogeneous response to vibration acro…

Effect of Low-Frequency Vibration on Muscle Response under Different Neurointact Conditions.

Stretch reflex is an important factor that influences the biomechanical response of the human body under whole-body vibration. However, there is a lack of quantitative evaluation at lower frequencies. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of vibration on the stretch reflex and, in particular, to explore the quantitative relationship between dynamic muscle responses and low-frequency vibrations. The gastrocnemius muscle of 45 Sprague-Dawley rats was dissected. Sinusoidal vibrations of five discrete frequencies (2~16 Hz) with peak-to-peak amplitudes of 1 mm were applied to t…

Loading of the hip and knee joints during whole body vibration training.

During whole body vibrations, the total contact force in knee and hip joints consists of a static component plus the vibration-induced dynamic component. In two different cohorts, these forces were measured with instrumented joint implants at different vibration frequencies and amplitudes. For three standing positions on two platforms, the dynamic forces were compared to the static forces, and the total forces were related to the peak forces during walking. A biomechanical model served for estimating muscle force increases from contact force increases. The median static forces were 122% to 168…

Vibration-induced Behavioral Responses and Response Threshold in Female C57BL/6 Mice.

Despite documented adverse effects, limits for rodent exposure to vibration in the laboratory animal facility have not been established. This study used female C57BL/6 mice to determine the frequencies of vibration at which mice were most sensitive to behavioral changes, the highest magnitude of vibration that would not cause behavioral changes, the behavioral changes that occur in response to vibration, and the extent to which mice habituate to vibration. Mice were exposed to frequencies of vibration between 20 and 190 Hz at accelerations of 0.05 to 1.0 m/s2. Behavioral responses were videore…
