A contained open abdomen is commonly used during damage control laparotomy and consists of the temporary coverage of the abdomen for protection of the viscera and reduction of intra-abdominal pressure. Definitive closure of a contained open abdomen is technically difficult due to the inability to obtain primary fascial suture. The insertion of a prosthetic mesh can be complicated with enterocutaneous fistula, and other definitive closure techniques need several surgical procedures. This report describes a case of polysplenia syndrome diagnosed by selective spleen scintigraphy. This syndrome is rarely encountered in the elderly. It is characterized by multiple splenuncules with a number of associated congenital anomalies involving the cardiovascular system and the viscera. By employing haematological, histological and isotope studies on rabbit, it was shown that envenomation by the South African crab spider, Sicarius testaceus, results in tissue necrosis and a marked increase in the permeability of the blood vessels in the vicinity of envenomation. A case of primary mucinous carcinoma originating in the renal pelvis associated with renal lithiasis is reported. The left kidney removed was mostly occupied by mucinous carcinoma with areas of signet ring cell carcinoma. The epithelium covering the pelvis consisted of a single layer of columnar epithelium with scattered goblet cells and mucous glands. A series of careful examinations of the abdominal viscera failed to disclose any other primary lesion. The patient died with multiple peritoneal tumor disseminations eight months after the operation despite additional chemotherapy.

A total of 13 dogs weighing 13-15 kg were infected by intra-dental route with the tuberculosis mycobacterium strain H37R in a dose of 0.5 ml in the 5th dilution according to a turbidity standard. Two dogs were given intravenously the same dose of tuberculosis mycobacteria and they formed a control group. The observation varied from 10 days to 5 months. It was found tuberculosis development in intradental contamination could be attended by generalized specific affection of the viscera and development of a "minor" tuberculosis inflammation in the peridental tissues.

A four-year-old Holstein, 23 days postpartum, was presented with abdominal distention. Gas filled viscera were detected in the right paralumbar fossa and pelvic canal. Surgery revealed cecal and colonic distention and generalized intestinal atony. There was no other evidence of gross pathology. The condition deteriorated during five post-operative days. Gross postmortem findings were not remarkable; histopathology revealed ganglionitis of the cranial mesenteric ganglion and myenteric plexus. A brief review of relevant literature for a differential diagnosis and an etiology is discussed.

Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is most commonly limited to cutaneous lesions that resolve spontaneously. However, generalized IM with visceral involvement, which has a reported mortality rate as high as 73%, has been successfully treated with a combination of methotrexate and vinblastine. Here we report the further efficacy of low-dose methotrexate and vinblastine in 2 pediatric patients with IM and visceral involvement and review the literature describing chemotherapy for these patients.
