Vergence and Accommodative Dysfunctions in Emmetropic and Myopic Chinese Young Adults.

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between refractive error and common binocular vision and accommodative dysfunctions in Chinese adults and to report the percentage of these disorders in this sample population. METHODS: This was a single-site, prospective cross-sectional clinic-based study. A total of 415 Chinese participants aged between 21 and 38 years were grouped into 4 refractive error groups (emmetropia, low, moderate, and high myopia) based on the spherical equivalent power of noncycloplegic refraction. Baseline testing including binocular vision and accommodative testing was per

Is there a need for binocular vision evaluation in low vision?

The purpose of this study was to determine the need for a binocular vision evaluation in the management of low vision patients. Thirty subjects were selected with visual acuities of at least 6/60 in each eye. Twenty-three had age-related macular degeneration as the primary ocular pathology and seven had various other ocular conditions. The binocular vision evaluation comprised: detailed history and symptoms with an emphasis on the occurrence of near vision problems; modified binocular vision assessment which included cover test at near, ocular movements, convergence, Bagolini glasses, horizont

Guidance (challenges and priorities) in the assessment of children with low vision: ERN-EYE clinical consensus statement.

Across Europe, children living with low vision often face inconsistent approaches to the assessment of their visual function, leading to delays in diagnosis and unequal access to care. To address this gap, a multidisciplinary group of experts from 8 European countries developed a clinical consensus statement (CCS), using a modified Delphi process. This CCS provides guidance on evaluation of primary visual functions in children with low vision, regardless of etiologies. Assessing visual function can be challenging and cannot be limited to testing visual acuity. It requires a comprehensive appro

Evaluation of vision screening of 5-15-year-old children in three Tongan schools: comparison of The Auckland Optotypes and Lea symbols.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive vision screening programmes for children are an important part of public health strategy, but do not exist in many countries, including Tonga. This project set out to assess: (1) the functional vision of children attending primary schools in Tonga and (2) how a new recognition acuity test (The Auckland Optotypes displayed on a tablet computer) compares to use of a standardised eye chart in this setting. METHODS: Children from three Tongan primary schools were invited to participate. Acuity testing was conducted using a standardised recognition acuity chart (Lea symbo

[Value of the stereoscopic tests in the detection of sensorimotor anomalies in children].

Limitations and advantages of the stereotests are briefly discussed. In this trial, two stereotests (TNO and Frisby) have been tested in 3 groups of patients: group 1 was composed of 180 cases with normal binocular vision; group 2 of 312 patients with known ocular motility disorders: group 3 of 186 patients with unknown sensorimotor status. The utility of the two stereotests in detecting ocular motility disorders and/or amblyopia is uncertain when used alone. Because of a high number of false positives and false negatives the tests are best used in conjunction with other clinical tests of ocul

Visual hallucinations in psychiatric conditions: appraisals and their relationship to distress.

OBJECTIVES: Visual hallucinations (visions) associated with psychiatric conditions are poorly understood. This study tested the hypothesis that appraisals of visions would predict distress associated with visions. It also aimed to describe typical appraisals of visions. DESIGN: A cross-sectional interview study of people with visual hallucinations. METHOD: Participants (N = 20) who had experienced visions caused by their psychiatric condition (i.e. not by additional pathology such as epilepsy or substance abuse) completed a semi-structured interview and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Visual performance of single-vision contact lenses utilizing opaque, nonrefractive features for potential myopia management.

SIGNIFICANCE: Contact lenses (CLs) utilizing opaque, nonrefractive features may purposefully modulate retinal ganglion cell activity away from the baseline activity. This is a nonrefractive mechanism that may reduce myopia progression. However, the visual performance of CLs with opaque features is unknown. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the visual performance and binocular/accommodative function of CLs with opaque features (test) against MiSight (control-1) and single-vision (control-2) CLs. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, unmasked, cross-over study where 35 myopic CL wear

Comprehensive visual electrophysiological measurements discover crucial changes caused by alcohol addiction in humans: Clinical values in early prevention of alcoholic vision decline.

Alcohol addiction often compromises vision by impairing the visual pathway, particularly the retina and optic nerve. Vision decline in alcoholics consists of a sequential transition from reversible functional deterioration of the visual pathway to irreversible clinical vision degeneration or vision loss. Thus, the control of alcoholic vision decline should focus on prevention before permanent damage occurs. Visual electrophysiology is a promising method for early detection of retinal dysfunction and optic neuropathy, including full-field electroretinography (ffERG) and pattern-reversal visual

Cortical visual impairment at birth can be improved rapidly by vision training in adulthood: A case study.

BACKGROUND: Cortical visual impairment (CVI) is a severe loss of visual function caused by damage to the visual cortex or its afferents, often as a consequence of hypoxic insults during birth. It is one of the leading causes of vision loss in children, and it is most often permanent. OBJECTIVE: Several studies have demonstrated limited vision restoration in adults who trained on well-controlled psychophysical tasks, after acquiring CVI late in life. Other studies have shown improvements in children who underwent vision training. However, little is known about the prospects for the large numbe

Mobility performance in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To determine whether glaucoma affects mobility performance and whether there is a relationship between mobility performance and stage of disease as estimated from vision-function measures. METHODS: The mobility performance of 47 glaucoma subjects was compared with that of 47 normal-vision subjects who were of similar age. Mobility performance was assessed by the time required to complete an established travel path and the number of mobility incidents. The subjective assessment of falling and fear of falling were also compared. Vision function was assessed by measures of visual acuity

Visual impairment in children with a brain tumor: a prospective nationwide multicenter study using standard visual testing and optical coherence tomography (CCISS study).

BACKGROUND: Children with a brain tumor have a high risk of impaired vision. Up to now, visual acuity measurement, visual field testing and orthoptic testing are the most informative diagnostic investigations for the assessment of visual function. Evaluating vision in children can be challenging given the challenges in cooperation, concentration and age-dependent shifts in visual tests. Since visual loss due to a brain tumor can be progressive and irreversible, we must aim to detect visual impairment as early as possible. Several studies have shown that optical coherence tomography facilitates

Outcomes of an elementary school-based vision screening program in North Carolina.

School nurses can play a key role in the detection of significant refractive error. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a statewide school nurse vision screening program by evaluating the outcomes of screening among first, third, and fifth graders in 10 schools in North Carolina during the 2009-2010 school year. Of the 2,726 children who were screened, 7.7% (n = 209) were abnormal, of which 89% (n = 186) were placed into a comprehensive database for follow-up. No documentation of any follow-up was available for 35% (n = 65) of these children. Of the 106 with complete eye exam

Surveillance of vision and ocular disorders in children with Down syndrome.

Children with Down syndrome have a high prevalence of ocular disorders. The UK Down's Syndrome Medical Interest Group (DSMIG) guidelines for ophthalmic screening were locally implemented into a protocol that included neonatal eye examination by an ophthalmologist and a comprehensive ophthalmological examination (cycloplegic refraction, ophthalmoscopy, and orthoptic assessment) by at least the age of 3 years, followed by preschool follow-up as indicated. We audited retrospectively surveillance for ocular disorders before and after the DSMIG-based guidelines were locally adopted in 1995. Results
