B-vitamin interventions for women and children in low-income populations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the effect of B vitamins on women and child health from recent evidence available. RECENT FINDINGS: Findings were related to functional outcomes. In terms of foetal growth, although supplementation with B12 increased B12 status of nonpregnant and pregnant women and infants, maternal plasma homocysteine, which is related to multiple deficiencies of vitamin B12, B6, riboflavin or folate, has been shown to be associated with lower birth size rather than solely plasma B12. However, an experimental study with thiamine supplementation showed improvement in st

Contribution of dietary intakes of antioxidants to homocysteine-induced low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in atherosclerotic patients.

PURPOSE: Elevated circulating oxidized low density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) levels are associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis, which may be due to high plasma homocysteine (Hcy) and low intakes of antioxidants. We investigated the contribution of dietary intakes of antioxidants to Hcy-induced LDL oxidation in atherosclerotic patients (AP) and controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male AP (n = 101) who were confirmed by coronary angiography and 91 controls were evaluated by blood biochemistry and dietary intakes. To determine whether homocysteine is an independent risk factor for atheroscler

A survey of the current clinical practice of psychiatrists and accident and emergency specialists in the United Kingdom concerning vitamin supplementation for chronic alcohol misusers.

Although it is well known that B-vitamin deficiencies directly affecting the brain are common in alcohol misuse, no concise guidelines on the use of vitamin supplements in alcohol misusers currently exist in the UK. The purpose of this study was to assess current practice and opinion among UK physicians. Questionnaires were completed by a total of 427 physicians comprising Accident and Emergency (A&E) specialists and psychiatrists, with a response rate of 25%. The main findings were that vitamin deficiency was perceived as being uncommon amongst alcohol misusers (<25%) and there was no consens

Association between dietary vitamins intake and the DMFT index: a cross-sectional analysis of the Rafsanjan cohort study.

This study aimed to investigate the associations between dietary intake of vitamins and the DMFT index (Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth). This cross-sectional study utilized baseline data collected from the Oral Health Branch of the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (OHBRCS). OHBRCS is a part of Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS) that begun from 2015 in Rafsanjan in the southeast of Iran. The baseline phase of RCS ended in 2017. The RCS enrolled 9,991 individuals aged 35-70 years from both genders. A comprehensive full-mouth examination was performed to determine the DMFT index. Dietary intakes of vitamins

Non-drug pain relievers active on non-opioid pain mechanisms.

This review is aimed to summarize the pain-relieving effect of non-drug substances, mostly prescribed as integrators in treatment of pain, i … f the effect and to lower the doses. Convincing examples of effective combinations against pain are vitamin B complex plus gabapentin for CPSP, including neuropathic pain; vitamin B complex plus diclofenac against low back pain and also in association with gabapentin, and ALA for burning mouth syndrome. These as well as other examples need, however, careful control …

Micronutrients in Cardiovascular Disease: A Comprehensive Review of Vitamins, Trace Minerals, and Electrolytes.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of global mortality, accounting for approximately 17.3 million deaths annually. The antioxidant effects of certain micronutrients may play a role in CVD prevention. This systematic review critically evaluates the evidence on antioxidant vitamins (C, E, carotenoids), B-complex vitamins, vitamin D, trace minerals (iron, copper, zinc, selenium), and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium) in cardiovascular health. This scoping review with narrative synthesis was informed by PRISMA principles. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Google

Vitamin and mineral status: effects on physical performance.

Public health recommendations encourage the selection of a balanced diet and increasing physical activity to foster health and well-being. Whereas the adverse effects of restricted intakes of protein, fat, and carbohydrate on physical performance are well known, there is limited information about the impact of low intakes of vitamins and minerals on the exercise capacity and performance of humans. Physically active people generally consume amounts of vitamins and minerals consistent with the recommendations for the general public. However, when intakes are less than recommendations, some notic

Micronutrients and their supplementation in chronic cardiac failure. An update beyond theoretical perspectives.

Physicians' use of micronutrients to improve symptoms or outcomes in chronic illness has until recently been guided by limited data on the actions of individual agents in vitro or in animal studies. However several recently published clinical trials have provided information about which groups of patients are likely to benefit from which combination of micronutrients. Patients with chronic cardiac failure (CCF), particularly elderly individuals, have several reasons to be deficient in micronutrients including reduced intake, impaired gastrointestinal absorption and increased losses on the back

The effects of dietary niacin and riboflavin on voluntary intake and metabolism of ethanol in rats.

The effects of dietary deficiency and excess of niacin and riboflavin on voluntary drinking of 10% (v/v) ethanol were studied in male rats. The effectiveness of dietary deficiency and excess of both niacin and riboflavin on tissue levels of these vitamins was demonstrated by measurements of urinary N1-methylnicotinamide and blood glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2) activity. A high-niacin diet containing 75 mg niacin/kg food decreased ethanol intake by about 36% compared to the control diet containing 15 mgniacin/kg. Niacin or riboflavin deficiency and a high-riboflavin diet containing 40 mg rt

Diet, nutrition, and cancer.

As the second leading cause of death in the United States, cancer is a major public health problem today. Cancer incidence varies worldwide and tends to change with migration. These epidemiological observations have led to the concept that environmental factors may be important in carcinogenesis. Diet and nutrition are receiving increased attention and the National Cancer Institute, as mandated by the Nation Cancer Act Amendments of 1974, is playing a major leadership role in expanding research efforts in the areas of environmental carcinogenesis, and nutrition in relation to cancer. The subje

Phase II study of oral vitamin B12 supplementation as an alternative to intramuscular injection for patients with non-small cell lung cancer undergoing pemetrexed therapy.

PURPOSE: A vitamin B12 supplement is required in pemetrexed single agent therapy. Intramuscular administration is the method of choice; however, oral administration is simpler and easier and may be sufficiently effective. We conducted a Phase II study to evaluate the safety of oral administration of vitamin B12 in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who received pemetrexed single agent therapy. METHODS: Folic acid and vitamin B12 were given orally for ˃ 1 week before pemetrexed administration. The primary end-point was onset of a grade ≥ 3 neutropenia ratio (50% of threshold exp

Investigation of the efficacy of two different laser types in the treatment of lower lip paresthesia after sagittal split ramus osteotomy.

Orthognathic surgery involves invasive and major surgical procedures commonly used to correct maxillofacial deformities. Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSO) is often used to treat dentofacial anomalies related to the mandible, but it can result in various complications, the most common of which is inferior alveolar nerve damage. Nerve damage-induced paresthesia of the lower lip significantly affects patient comfort. Medical treatments such as steroids and vitamin B, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) can be used as supportive therapies for nerve regenera
