The Case of Atypical Sexual Attractiveness in a Male Domestic Dog-A Case Study.

During the ovarian cycle in domestic dogs, females do not accept males during the first days of estrus but become attractive to males from the beginning of proestrus, with this attractiveness persisting until the end of the estrus phase. It is believed that increased estradiol is responsible for the female attractiveness to the males. In this paper we describe the case of strong, but atypical attractiveness of a castrated male to various, adult, intact males, influenced by the emitted semiochemical signals. Any significant changes in the level of hormones typically involved in the process conn

Efficacy of vocal fold injection of dedifferentiated fat cells in treating glottis closure insufficiency: Insights from a rat model of recurrent laryngeal nerve resection.

Glottic insufficiency results from impaired vocal fold contact, leading to a gap between the folds and manifesting as hoarseness and respiratory difficulties. Vocal folds injection is a commonly utilized therapeutic approach to rectify this gap by augmenting vocal folds volume; however, the optimal injectable material remains undetermined. Dedifferentiated fat cells (DFATs), derived from mature adipocytes, exhibit robust proliferative capacity and multipotency, establishing them as potential candidates for treating glottic insufficiency. This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy of DFAT

Vibratory Dynamics of Four Types of Excised Larynx Phonations.

OBJECTIVES: There are four types of signals that are typical representations of vocal fold vibratory patterns. Type 1 signals are nearly periodic, type 2 signals contain subharmonic properties, type 3 signals are chaotic, and type 4 signals are characterized as white noise. High-speed imaging allows detailed observation of these vocal fold vibratory patterns. Therefore, high-speed imaging can explore the vibratory mechanism behind each of the four types of signals. METHODS: The glottal area time series of the four types of vocal fold vibrations were calculated from high-speed images of 10 exc

Neuromuscular basis for ventricular fold function.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the neuromuscular basis for ventricular fold function. The primary function of the ventricular folds is to assist in the regulation of intra-abdominal and intrathoracic pressure. They also influence phonation in the setting of vocal fold paralysis or ventricular dysphonia, or after partial laryngectomy. The neuromuscular basis of true vocal fold function has been well studied; however, its neuromuscular correlates in the ventricular folds are ambiguous. The literature is unclear as to whether ventricular fold contraction is passive or active. The musculature an

An experimental study on the laryngeal electromyography and visual observations in varying types of surgical injuries to the unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve in the neck.

A series of varying types of surgical injuries to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, including half section, double crush, suture ligation, and complete section of the nerve, was investigated in dogs by correlating clinical and electromyographic findings. The state of recovery from palsy was evaluated by recording the electromyography from the affected laryngeal muscles as well as by observing the movements of the vocal cords. Six electromyography patterns were recorded from the affected muscles following injuries to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. There is a close relationship between the electrom

Qufeng Zhidong Recipe attenuates dendritic impairments via GDNF modulation in tourette syndrome: Evidence from clinical and animal studies.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by motor and vocal tics. Recent evidence highlights the role of neurotrophic factors like glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), which may play a key role in the pathogenesis and exacerbation of TS. Qufeng Zhidong Recipe (QFZDR), a traditional Chinese herbal formulation, has demonstrated clinical efficacy in the treatment of TS. However, its potential to enhance neurotrophic support and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate

Histological Correlates of Auditory Nerve Injury from Kainic Acid in the Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

PURPOSE: Loss of auditory nerve afferent synapses with cochlear hair cells, called cochlear synaptopathy, is a common pathology in humans caused by aging and noise overexposure. The perceptual consequences of synaptopathy in isolation from other cochlear pathologies are still unclear. Animal models provide an effective approach to resolve uncertainty regarding the physiological and perceptual consequences of auditory nerve loss, because neural lesions can be induced and readily quantified. The budgerigar, a parakeet species, has recently emerged as an animal model for synaptopathy studies base

Emergence of negative affect as motivation for drug taking in rats chronically self-administering cocaine.

RATIONALE: The role of negative affect as a motivational factor in animal models of drug addiction has been underexplored in the context of cocaine self-administration. OBJECTIVES: The present investigation studied the relationship between magnitude of affective response and quantity of cocaine consumed in order to clarify the affective components that drive drug use in a preclinical model. METHODS: Rats self-administered (SA) cocaine 6 h/day for 14 consecutive days while their ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) were recorded. RESULTS: Animals displayed an increase in 50-kHz call rates (indica

Awakenings in rats by ultrasounds: A new animal model for paradoxical kinesia.

Paradoxical kinesia refers to a sudden transient ability of akinetic patients to perform motor tasks they are otherwise unable to perform. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are unknown due a paucity of valid animal models that faithfully reproduce paradoxical kinesia. Here, in a first experiment, we present a new method to study paradoxical kinesia by "awakening" cataleptic rats through presenting appetitive 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USV), which are typical for social situations with positive valence, like juvenile play or sexual encounters ("rat laughter"). Rats received system

Individual differences in personality in laying hens are related to learning a colour cue association.

Personality can influence how animals perceive and learn cues. The behaviour and physiological responses animals show during stressful events is indicative of their personality. Acute induced stress prior to a cognitive test are known to affect the judgement of a stimulus, but personality of an individual could also affect learning of a specific cognitive paradigm. Here, we assessed if adult laying hens' behaviour and physiological responses, as indicators of their personality, were related to their cognitive performance. We assessed their behavioural responses to a tonic immobility test, an o

Activation of the maternal immune system during pregnancy alters behavioral development of rhesus monkey offspring.

BACKGROUND: Maternal infection during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia and autism in the offspring. Supporting this correlation, experimentally activating the maternal immune system during pregnancy in rodents produces offspring with abnormal brain and behavioral development. We have developed a nonhuman primate model to bridge the gap between clinical populations and rodent models of maternal immune activation (MIA). METHODS: A modified form of the viral mimic, synthetic double-stranded RNA (polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid stabilized with poly-L-lysine) was del

Mice lacking Astn2 have ASD-like behaviors and altered cerebellar circuit properties.

Astrotactin 2 (ASTN2) is a transmembrane neuronal protein highly expressed in the cerebellum that functions in receptor trafficking and modulates cerebellar Purkinje cell (PC) synaptic activity. We recently reported a family with a paternally inherited intragenic ASTN2 duplication with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), learning difficulties, and speech and language delay. To provide a genetic model for the role of the cerebellum in ASD-related behaviors and study the role of ASTN2 in cerebellar circuit function, we generated global and PC-specif

Emotional responses in monkeys differ depending on the stimulus type, sex, and neonatal amygdala lesion status.

The amygdala plays an essential role in evaluating social information, threat detection, and learning fear associations. Yet, most of that knowledge comes from studies in adult humans and animals with a fully developed amygdala. Given the considerable protracted postnatal development of the amygdala, it is important to understand how early damage to this structure may impact the long-term development of behavior. The current study examined behavioral responses toward social, innate, or learned aversive stimuli among neonatal amygdala lesion (Neo-Aibo; males = 3, females = 3) or sham-operated c

Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Reinnervation in Rats Posttransection: Neurotrophic Factor Expression over Time.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury causes vocal fold paralysis from which functional recovery is typically absent due to nonselective reinnervation. This study investigates expression of axon guidance cues and their modulators relative to the chronology of reinnervation by examining the expression of glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), netrin 1, and laminin 111 (LAMA1) in nonpooled laryngeal muscles. This study is the first to describe the post-RLN injury expression pattern of LAMA1, a target of particular interest as it has been shown to switch netrin 1-mediated growth co

Thyroid hormone controls the onset of androgen sensitivity in the developing larynx of Xenopus laevis.

Gonadal differentiation, the onset of androgen-stimulated laryngeal growth and the genesis of a sex difference in laryngeal innervation, all temporally coincide with thyroid hormone (TH)-induced metamorphosis in Xenopus laevis. To explore the role TH plays in the ontogeny of the Xenopus androgen-sensitive vocal neuromuscular system, we examined gonadal and laryngeal development in tadpoles in which metamorphosis had been blocked by treatment with the thyroxine synthesis inhibitor propylthiouracil (PTU). PTU treatment did not arrest gonadal differentiation. Testes from PTU-treated male tadpoles
