The automated sample preparation system MixMaster for investigation of volatile organic compounds with mid-infrared evanescent wave spectroscopy.

For efficient development assessment, and calibration of new chemical analyzers a large number of independently prepared samples of target analytes is necessary. Whereas mixing units for gas analysis are readily available, there is a lack of instrumentation for accurate preparation of liquid samples containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Manual preparation of liquid samples containing VOCs at trace concentration levels is a particularly challenging and time consuming task. Furthermore, regularly scheduled calibration of sensors and analyzer systems demands for computer controlled automa…

Combining membrane extraction with mobile gas chromatography for the field analysis of volatile organic compounds in contaminated waters.

A mobile gas chromatographic device (Airmobtx HC 1000 monitor manufactured by Airmotec, Germany), originally designed for the analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in air, was connected to a flow cell for dynamic membrane extraction. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) diffuse out of a water stream through a hollow fibre, are enriched onto sorption tubes integrated in the mobile device, and are then thermally desorbed and analysed by gas chromatography-flame ionisation detection. Battery operation of the device enables continuous on-site analysis of VOCs. Influences of th…

Field demonstration of pervaporation for the separation of volatile organic compounds from a surfactant-based soil remediation fluid.

As part of a Department of Defense project, the US Environmental Protection Agency was responsible for designing, building and field operating a pilot-scale pervaporation unit. The field site was an active dry cleaning facility on the grounds of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC. The overall goal of the project was to remove tetrachloroethylene (PCE) from the soil beneath the dry cleaning shop using a surfactant-based soil remediation fluid and to recycle/reuse the surfactant. In order to reinject the recovered surfactant, the pervaporation unit was required to achieve an aver

Machine Learning-Guided Discovery of Efficient Metal-Organic Frameworks for Volatile Organic Compound Removal: A Case Study on CCl4.

The adsorption of carbon tetrachloride (CTC) in MOFs was investigated by integrating GCMC simulations at 298.15 K and 10 kPa with machine learning (ML). The structural properties, including the largest cavity diameter, pore limiting diameter, and accessible surface area, were used as features in the ML models. Four algorithms, including Random Forest, LightGBM, XGBoost, and CatBoost, were employed to predict the CTC adsorptions. CatBoost demonstrated superior accuracy, achieving an R2 of 0.859 and an RMSE of 0.049. K-Means clustering identified MOF clusters with high average adsorptions and hi

Obscured Contribution of Oxygenated Intermediate-Volatility Organic Compounds to Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from Gasoline Vehicle Emissions.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from gasoline vehicles spanning a wide range of emission types was investigated using an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) by conducting chassis dynamometer tests. Aided by advanced mass spectrometric techniques, SOA precursors, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and intermediate/semivolatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs), were comprehensively characterized. The reconstructed SOA produced from the speciated VOCs and I/SVOCs can explain 69% of the SOA measured downstream of an OFR upon 0.5-3 days' OH exposure. While VOCs can only explain 10% of total …

Volatile organic compounds from Lysinibacillus fusiformis: Dual-action of grey mold inhibition and postharvest quality preservation in cherry tomatoes.

Postharvest quality deterioration and fungal disease severely reduce the commercial value of cherry tomatoes, while traditional chemical preservation approaches raise food safety and environmental risks. Microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are regarded as eco-friendly and efficient postharvest preservation alternatives. This study systematically investigated the effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of VOCs produced by Lysinibacillus fusiformis in maintaining postharvest quality and inducing disease resistance in cherry tomatoes. L. fusiformis VOCs fumigation significantly suppre…

Urinary Volatile Organic Compounds as Non-Invasive Biomarkers to Distinguish Hepatocellular Carcinoma from Cirrhosis: A Multicentre Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) typically arises on a background of cirrhosis and carries high mortality, in large part because current surveillance tools-ultrasound and serum AFP-have suboptimal sensitivity for early-stage disease. We investigated whether urinary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could provide a more accurate non-invasive approach. Across four UK centres, 256 participants were recruited: 72 with confirmed HCC and 184 with cirrhosis but no malignancy. Complete urine VOC profiles were obtained using an eight-sensor electronic nose in 190 participants (58 HCC, 132 cirrhosis). Sev…

Intraspecific communication through volatile organic compounds in the mosses Didymodon vinealis and Syntrichia caninervis from an arid temperate desert.

BACKGROUND AND AMIS: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) mediated plant-plant communication is a crucial mechanism enhancing plants' ecological fitness, yet its role in desert mosses remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed VOCs emission from Didymodon vinealis and Syntrichia caninervis and simulated their intraspecific airborne communication under dehydration-rehydration cycles. The VOCs emitters and receivers were subsequently subjected to light rainfall events, and soluble sugar, starch, chlorophyll, and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) were measured to assess stress resistance. RESULTS: Ga…

Evaluating yeasts as biocontrol agents against pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms in agri-food: action of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Yeasts are widely recognized for their industrial and fermentative relevance, but their potential as source of antibacterial compounds remains significantly underexplored compared to bacteria or filamentous fungi. This study evaluated a wide taxonomically characterized population of yeast strains for their antimicrobial activity against enteropathogenic bacteria, plant pathogens and spoilage molds, using both direct-contact and VOC-mediated assays. Our findings reveal that antimicrobial activity, including the production of inhibitory VOCs, is highly complex, depending not only on the genus an

Microbial volatile organic compounds produced during the anaerobic digestion process can serve as potential indicators of microbial community stability.

The principal challenge in monitoring anaerobic digestion (AD) processes lies in the fact that conventional operational parameters (pH, volatile fatty acids, etc.) frequently lag behind the actual microbial performance. This study proposes microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) as a novel indicator reflecting the species-specific characteristics of microorganisms and evaluates their ability to indicate the stability of AD processes in response to organic loading rate (OLR) perturbations. Both gradual and pulsed increases in OLR concentration resulted in an instantaneous change in product…

Fractionation of stable carbon isotopes during UV degradation of toluene: implications for the quantitative characterization of volatile organic compounds.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major atmospheric pollutants commonly derived from the fossil fuel combustion. The concentration of VOCs in the atmosphere and its dynamics have widely been used to evaluate their source, formation processes, residence time, and photochemical reactions involved in the atmosphere. However, little is known about the effect of UV degradation of VOCs during their transport from the source to the study area, which always reduces accuracy in the understanding of VOCs' characteristics in the atmosphere. In the present study, we investigated the fractionation of c…
