Halogen ion-modified silver nanoparticles for ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Rapid ultrasensitive detection of trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is essential and significant for pollution control due to their hazard, persistence, and the wide distribution in the environment. Therefore, rapid detection of PAHs is critical for controlling pollution and protecting the ecology. Considering the advantages of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), a simple and reliable SERS method was proposed in this work for detecting PAHs in water. Three chemicals, namely NaCl, KBr, and KI, were chosen to modify Ag nanoparticles (NPs) for phenanthrene (Phe) detection, and

[Climate change and global pollution : endocrine consequences].

Modern industrial societies have profoundly transformed our environment. Climate change - particularly global warming - and pollution, whether atmospheric or chemical and present in water and food, exert detrimental effects on both human and animal health. In particular, alterations in endocrine function have been reported. This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on the effects of global warming and environmental pollution on the function of three glands under hypothalamic-pituitary control: the adrenal cortex, the thyroid gland, and the gonads.

Spatial allocation of LID practices with a water footprint approach.

Urban water problems due to stormwater have been aggravated by the higher frequency of high-intensity precipitation events and the increase of paved surfaces. However, with appropriate stormwater management practices, such as low-impact development (LID), stormwater can provide an additional urban water resources rather than cause damage. This study aims to apply a water footprint to location determination of LID practices in the urban area. The LID planning procedure was demonstrated with the highest population density region in Taipei, Taiwan. In order to improve the spatial resolution of LI

The pesticide mineralization capacity in sand filter units of drinking water treatment plants (DWTP): Consistency in time and relationship with intake water and sand filter characteristics.

Sand filters (SFs) are commonly applied in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) for removal of iron and manganese but also show potential for microbial degradation of pesticide residues. The latter is advantageous in case the intake water contains pesticide residues. However, whether this involves mineralization suggesting no generation of harmful transformation products, its consistency over time, and how this ability relates to physicochemical and biological characteristics of the DWTP intake water and the SFs is unknown. The capacity to mineralize the herbicides bentazon and 2-methyl-4-c

Optimization of extraction methods for quantification of microcystin in drinking water treatment residuals: Implications for safe land application.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) in freshwater have increased the burden on drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) to supply high-quality water and manage drinking water treatment residuals (DWTRs). Land application of CyanoHAB-affected DWTRs could lead to microcystin (MC) accumulation in crops, posing public health risks. However, studies on MC recoveries from DWTRs remain limited. This study focused on optimizing methods for MC quantification from DWTR matrices, testing five solvents and two pretreatment methods. Results showed that 75 % acidified methanol (MeOH) was optimal
