[Decline of speech understanding in the hearing impaired elderly listeners who visited our hearing aid clinic].

The aim of this study was to investigate distinctive change in the hearing impaired elderly listeners, especially about speech recognition. Subjects were 525 patients (235 males, 290 females), from 60 to 98 years of age who had visited the Hearing Aid Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology, National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology Hospital, between June 2001 and December 2012. Pure-tone air conduction threshold determination was administered to each subject. The speech audiometry materials used to define speech discrimination ability were Japanese monosyllabic word lists, 67S word lists. Sex- and

Environmental sound processing in primary progressive aphasia: behavioral deficits and their neural correlates.

Understanding environmental sound recognition provides insight into the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying nonverbal auditory semantics. In this study, we investigated the clinical characteristics and neural correlates of environmental sound recognition impairments in primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Fifty-three patients with PPA (25 non-fluent/agrammatic, nine semantic, five logopenic, and 14 unclassified), age-matched healthy controls, and patients with other dementia syndromes were examined. Audiological measures included pure-tone thresholds, verbal sound recognition (phoneme ide

Association Between Lifetime Marijuana Use and Cognitive Function in Middle Age: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study.

IMPORTANCE: Marijuana use is increasingly common in the United States. It is unclear whether it has long-term effects on memory and other domains of cognitive function. OBJECTIVE: To study the association between cumulative lifetime exposure to marijuana use and cognitive performance in middle age. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We used data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, a cohort of 5115 black and white men and women aged 18 to 30 years at baseline from March 25, 1985, to June 7, 1986 (year 0), and followed up over 25 years from June 7, 1986, t

Reading with the right hemisphere: evidence from transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Although many patients with dominant hemisphere damage retain some reading ability, the anatomic substrate of the preserved reading remains controversial. We tested the hypothesis that the right hemisphere mediates the reading of some patients with acquired dyslexia by using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to assess the effect of transient cortical stimulation on reading. A patient with (partially recovered) pure alexia was asked to read aloud briefly presented words, half of which were shown in association with TMS of the right or left hemisphere. Consistent with the right hemisphere

Consistency of reward responses in neutral and anxious states in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorder that typically onsets in adolescence. AN is marked by atypical reward responsiveness and elevated anxiety. However, the neural dynamics of reward responsivity, and how this is impacted by being in an anxious state, are unknown in AN. To test this, we conducted a novel fMRI task consisting of a monetary reward following anxiety provocation or a neutral condition. METHODS: Forty-seven adolescent participants (25 females with partially or fully weight restored AN, post treatment and 22 mildly anxious controls) were pr

The VWFA Is the Home of Orthographic Learning When Houses Are Used as Letters.

Learning to read specializes a portion of the left mid-fusiform cortex for printed word recognition, the putative visual word form area (VWFA). This study examined whether a VWFA specialized for English is sufficiently malleable to support learning a perceptually atypical second writing system. The study utilized an artificial orthography, HouseFont, in which house images represent English phonemes. House images elicit category-biased activation in a spatially distinct brain region, the so-called parahippocampal place area (PPA). Using house images as letters made it possible to test whether t

Architecture and anatomy of executive processes: evidence from verbal fluency and Trail Making Test in 2009 stroke patients.

OBJECTIVES: The few voxel-wise lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) studies aimed at identifying the anatomy of executive function are limited by the absence of a model and by small populations. Using Trail Making Test (TMT) and verbal fluency and a model of their architectures, our objective was to identify the key structures underlying two major executive processes, set-shifting and strategic word search. METHODS: We applied a validated VLSM analysis to harmonized cognitive and imaging data from 2009 ischemic stroke patients as a part of the Meta VCI Map consortium. All contrast analyses used an a

Age-related and gender-related changes in monaural speech recognition.

Previous studies of older listeners suggest age-related declines in speech recognition. However, the interpretation of these results is not straightforward because auditory thresholds, which account for the largest proportion of the variance in speech-recognition scores, also vary considerably with age. Here, effects of age, gender, and auditory thresholds on several measures of speech recognition were assessed for a large sample of individuals enrolled in a longitudinal study of age-related hearing loss. Participants ranged in age from 55-84 years. They were evaluated with a battery of conven

Emoji as promising tools for emotional evaluation in orthodontics.

BACKGROUND: Emoji are pictograms frequently used in social networks capable of expressing emotions. These tools can provide insights into people's behavior that could not be obtained with the use of textual communication. Recently, emoji have been introduced to various research fields as successful alternatives to word-based questionnaires for measure emotional responses. The objective of this study was to preliminarily evaluate the discriminating ability and relationship of these tools with different occlusal conditions/malocclusions. METHODS: Online surveys were applied to adult individuals

Evaluating perceptual evidence of cross-modal plasticity in older adults with hearing loss using an audio-visual word mismatch task.

Older adults with age-related hearing loss (OAHL) are more strongly influenced by vision during audiovisual perception tasks compared to typical-hearing older adults, suggesting a greater weighting of visual input in the former group. This visual "bias" has been argued to arise through compensatory, top-down cross-modal neuroplasticity that strengthens visual perceptual processing in response to hearing loss. However, current behavioural evidence does not convincingly demonstrate that cross-modal plasticity confers a visual benefit to OAHL, and existing methods do not untangle top-down influen

Expanding harm reduction services through a wound and abscess clinic.

A wound and abscess clinic, held concurrently with a syringe exchange, provided economical treatment and aftercare for injection-associated soft tissue infections. During 20 two-hour clinic sessions, 173 treatment episodes were logged, and the visit cost was estimated at $5 per patient. Increased patient-clinician interactions provided opportunities beyond those afforded by the syringe exchange for patients to obtain resources and referrals to services such as HIV counseling and testing, medical care, and drug treatment. Distribution of cards advertising the clinic was substantially less effec

Progressive asymmetric apraxic agraphia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Patients with apraxic agraphia cannot correctly form the letters needed to write words but can correctly spell words orally. Apraxic agraphia (AA) is often associated with ideomotor apraxia and most commonly induced by stroke, but can be associated with degenerative diseases. In degenerative diseases, asymmetrical apraxic agraphia (AAA) has rarely been reported as one of the presenting features. The purpose of this report is to describe a case series of 3 patients who presented with an AAA, and also to elucidate some of the cognitive mechanisms of this disorder. METHODS

Dichotic listening to temporal tonal stimuli by good and poor readers.

The hypothesis that reading disability is associated with impairment in the lateralization of temporal stimuli was tested by presenting 123 good- and poor-reading boys (Grades 4 through 6) with dichotic sets of temporal and nontemporal tonal stimuli for recognition. Reading ability was assessed by measuring proficiency in reading consonants, vowels, words, sentences and short stories. On the tone test, good readers showed a right-ear advantage in reporting the temporal stimuli, and a left-ear advantage in reporting the nontemporal stimuli. Poor readers showed the reversed pattern of response.

ADRA2B deletion variant influences time-dependent effects of pre-learning stress on long-term memory.

Extensive work over the past few decades has shown that certain genetic variations interact with life events to confer increased susceptibility for the development of psychological disorders. The deletion variant of the ADRA2B gene, which has been associated with enhanced emotional memory and heightened amygdala responses to emotional stimuli, might confer increased susceptibility for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or related phenotypes by increasing the likelihood of traumatic memory formation. Thus, we examined whether this genetic variant would predict stress effec

Flickering lenses enhance reading performance through placebo effect.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is the most frequent neurodevelopmental disorder among school-age children. Traditional remediation programs for DD are rarely controlled for the placebo effect, raising the hypothesis that positive expectations might explain their efficacy. Wearing expensive flickering glasses has been associated with extraordinary improvements in reading skills. The placebo effect and efficacy of these glasses on reading performance were tested. A double blind within-subject experimental design was used in children with DD (n = 49; Experiment 1) and unselected young adults (n = 48
