Seven cases of aortitis syndrome were surgically treated with good results: Abdominal aortic aneurysm 1, atypical coarctation of aorta 2, aortic valve insufficiency 2, renovascular hypertension 2. Several attentions were paid as following: 1. Operation should be avoided during acute phase of aortitis. 2. Synthetic graft material should be avoided if possible. Autogenous vein is advisable for reconstruction of small-sized artery. 3. Surgical intervention should be performed before the loss of organ function. 4. Hematological consideration is worthwhile to prevent hypercoagulopathy due to aortit

OBJECTIVE: In polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), glucocorticoids (GCs) relieve pain and stiffness, but fatigue may persist. We aimed to explore the effect of disease, GCs and PMR symptoms in the metabolite signatures of peripheral blood from patients with PMR or the related disease, giant cell arteritis (GCA).
METHODS: Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed on serum from 40 patients with untreated PMR, 84 with new-onset confirmed GCA, and 53 with suspected GCA who later were clinically confirmed non-GCA, and 39 age-matched controls. Further samples from PMR patients were taken one a…

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory rheumatic disease characterized by stiffness and aching mainly in the shoulders, neck and hip girdles. The underlying pathogenesis of PMR involves myeloid lineage activation with a high expression of pattern recognition receptors. In addition, vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 with mRNA-1273 functions as both an immunogen and intrinsic adjuvant. It leads to the activation of innate immunity, resulting in antibody production. We herein report the first case of PMR-like syndrome seven days after mRNA-1273 vaccinati

Corticosteroids rank at the first place among the most commonly used immunosuppressive agents in the rheumatology practice. Although their conventional adverse effects including hyperglycemia, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and osteoporosis are well-recognized and managed, steroid-induced cardiac arrhythmias are known to a lesser extent. In this regard, steroid-associated bradycardia is rarely expected and not very well known. Reported cases of steroid-associated bradycardias in the literature predominantly have emerged during the course of intravenous high-dose (pulse) methylprednisolone (MP)

Fusarium is a mould widely distributed in soil and water which causes various diseases in plants and occasionally in animals. The Fusarium species cause a broad spectrum of infections in humans, of which, the degree of severity is largely determined by the immune-status of the host, occurring in the most severe and invasive forms in immunocompromised individuals. Skin infections, sinusitis and pneumonia are the most common human manifestations of the disease. In patients with severe immunodeficiency, the disease can become invasive and disseminated causing fungemia. We report a case of an immu

In recent years, many advances have been made in our understanding of vasculitis etiopathology as well as of different disease courses. The revised Chapel Hill Consensus Conference (CHCC) 2012 nomenclature reflects current knowledge about etiopathology, in addition to the descriptive principles of vessel size and type of inflammation. Anti-neutrophil cyptoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides have been classified as a separate group, as opposed to immune complex small vessel vasculitis. In cases where consensus was achieved, eponyms have been replaced by systematic names, such as gra

BACKGROUND: Segmental arterial mediolysis, an uncommon arterial disorder most often occurring in the splanchnic muscular arteries of the abdomen, is a cause of catastrophic hemorrhages. Its histology and initial clinical presentations suggested that it represented a localized norepinephrine-induced vasospastic response to perturbations in vascular tone and blood volume distribution caused by coexisting vasoconstrictor conditions. However, later presentations were at odds with some aspects of this hypothesis.
METHODS: Nine greyhound dogs were administered a single dose of ractopamine. Two dogs

PURPOSE: To describe 4 patients who sustained facial nerve injury during temporal artery biopsy.
DESIGN: Retrospective, observational case series.
METHODS: The medical records were reviewed of 4 patients (2 men, 2 women; mean age 72.8 years, range 60 to 87), referred for evaluation of palsy of the frontal branch of the facial nerve following temporal artery biopsy. Main outcomes measured were site of incision, length of follow-up, and degree of recovery.
RESULTS: In all cases, incisions were made in the preauricular region or on the pretrichial temple within 3 cm of the lateral canthal angl

This study investigates the hypotheses that (1) the fetal inflammatory response to intra-amniotic infection can occur in early stages of mat … e. The absence of differences in cord vein inflammation depending on cord site and the finding that arteritis occurs close to the placental cord insertion site suggest that cord vessel blood flow dynamics play a role in neutrophil margination. At least 2 cord sections representing proximal and distal sites are recommended to exclude fetal inflammatory respo …

The application of suction cups or cupping is a medicinal practice that is very widespread in Asian countries. The presence of circular areas of erythema, ecchymosis or blood blisters symmetrically distributed on the shoulders, back, thorax or lumbar area should suggest the use of this technique. The number of followers of traditional Chinese medicine is increasing in the Western world, so we should be familiar with these practices in order to prevent social and/or legal conflicts that may arise from mistaken diagnoses of abuse. We present the case of a 65-year-old male with multiple circular,
