A 66-year-old female developed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) 17 months after treatment with bendamustine and rituximab chemoimmunotherapy. During her evaluation for PML, she was found to have a CD4 count of 176 cells/μL (reference range 492-1740). The patient demonstrated spontaneous recovery of symptoms that occurred in parallel with recovery of the CD4 counts. While PML is associated with rituximab therapy, the timing and patients' clinical course are atypical, raising the possibility of a previously unreported association with bendamustine therapy.

We observed a young man with apparently septic appendicitis who finally could be diagnosed as suffering from haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) when spuriously normalising platelet counts were identified as a cell counter artifact. This case stresses the fact that automatically counted abnormal thrombocyte numbers should be examined by microscopy. Therapy is empirically based on corticosteroids, plasmapheresis and fresh frozen plasma. The application of thrombocyte concentrates should be avoided because of the risk of aggravating the disease process.

Effects of lithium carbonate on peripheral white blood cell and granulocyte counts were investigated in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and non-Hodgkin malignant lymphoma. Li2CO3 given orally for two weeks in a single daily dose of 700 mg/m2 caused a significant and lasting increase in the peripheral WBC and granulocyte counts and increased the granulocyte ratio during induction of remission and maintenance cytotoxic therapy. Haematologic actions and the long-term effect of lithium carbonate are discussed.

A 41-year-old woman was admitted for Candida fungemia. On hospital day 4, a routine complete blood count and peripheral smear showed circulating plasma cells. Initial workup showed an M-component on serum protein electrophoresis with 6% λ-predominate plasma cells by flow cytometry. The patient was treated with intravenous antifungal therapy.
