A new steroidal alkaloid, michainine (1), was isolated from Fritillaria michailovskyi Fomin, along with nine known compounds 2-10 of different classes, including ribonucleoside, steroids, and fatty acids, which were isolated for the first time from this plant. Their structures were elucidated through extensive spectroscopic techniques, as well as by comparing the data in the literature. Furthermore, the dichloromethane fraction of F. michailovskyi showed a positive butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity, along with non-cytotoxicity against 3T3 cell line.

Four new prenylated isoflavones, rhynedulins A-C (1-3) and rhynedulinal (4), were isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation of the dichloromethane bark extract of Rhynchosia edulis. Five previously described compounds, scandenal, ulexin B, cajanone, cajanin, and cyclochandalone, were also isolated. These isoflavonoids showed weak inhibitory activity towards rhodesain, the major cathepsin-L like protease in Trypanosoma brucei. They also have weak antiproliferative activity towards MCF-7 cells.

There are sound biological reasons for using hyperthermia in the treatment of malignant disease. This review includes a discussion of this rationale and describes effects of hyperthermia either given alone or in combination with ionising radiation to cells in vitro, tumours or normal tissues. Topics discussed include thermotolerance, step-down sensitisation, fractionation, re-treatment of previously irradiated sites, thermal enhancement ratio and thermal dose. Problems of heat delivery and temperature measurement are considered and the current status of clinical studies is stated briefly.

For the early mouse foot skin reactions an increase in RBE relative to 60Co has been found for the irradiations with X ray beams generated between 100 and 250 kVp at both the surface and depth, respectively. In most cases, the RBE of the late skin reactions for irradiations at the surface and at depth are significantly lower than those for the early reactions. The clinical implications of these results, the effect of a possible hypoxic fraction of cells in the skin, and the choice of a "standard" radiation modality for radiobiological experiments are discussed.

The distribution of transferrin-donated iron between the stroma and cytosol compartments of rabbit reticulocytes was studied. In cells with inhibited haem synthesis iron accumulates in the stroma fraction. Quantitative electromyographic (QEMG) data recorded with two levels of threshold for the apparatus are compared. Using a fixed fraction of a subject's maximum effort the data are shown to be independent of sex, age and the strength of the muscles. The diagnostic yield of such a method is shown to be better with 50 muV threshold for analysis than with 100 muV, in cases of muscle disorders such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and polymyositis. However, in cases of neurogenic lesions due to anterior horn cell disease the diagnostic yield remains the same with both thresholds.
