Early childhood abuse and late-life suicidal ideation.

OBJECTIVES: In younger populations childhood sexual and physical abuse have been found to be associated with suicidal ideation. Such associations have not been examined among older adults. SETTING: Data from the National Comorbidity Study-Replication (NCS-R). PARTICIPANTS: Older adults (60+, N = 1610) from the NCS-R sample. MEASUREMENTS: Suicidal ideation occurring after the age of 60 was assessed. Early-life factors were assessed including childhood physical and sexual abuse and parent's internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Participants' internalizing and externalizing symptoms were a

Drug-resistant tuberculosis in two children in Greece: report of the first extensively drug-resistant case.

Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB) represents a serious and growing problem in both endemic and non-endemic countries. We describe a 2.5-year-old girl with XDR-pulmonary TB and an 18-month-old boy with pre-XDR-central nervous system TB. Patients received individualized treatment with second-line anti-TB agents based on genotypic and phenotypic drug susceptibility testing results. Both children achieved culture conversion 3 months and 1 month after treatment initiation, respectively. The child with XDR-pulmonary TB showed evidence of cure while treatment adverse events were mana

Influence of maternal nutritional status on vascular function in the offspring.

Suboptimal maternal nutritional status has been implicated in the development of cardiovascular risk in the child. Initially inferred from studies of low-birthweight children, investigations in cohorts of women subjected to famine provide direct evidence for an independent influence of the mother's diet on the cardiovascular health of her child. Animal studies from rodents and sheep have shown associations between maternal undernutrition and raised blood pressure, as well as abnormalities in resistance artery function, particularly in endothelium-dependent responses. Early life exposure to the

Cohesion and conflict: family influences on adolescent alcohol use in immigrant Latino families.

This study examines how cohesion and parent–child conflict relate to alcohol use among Mexican-heritage adolescents. The sample consists of 120 adolescents (14 to 18 years) participants from the Southwest sub-sample of the Latino Acculturation and Health Project. Lifetime and recent alcohol use and binge drinking were tested. Results from the logistic regressions identified high and low levels of family cohesion as a risk factor for alcohol use compared to medium levels of cohesion, and parent–child conflict predicted lifetime use and binge drinking. Low and high family cohesion levels appear

Impact of spatial distribution of permethrin-impregnated bed nets on child mortality in rural northern Ghana.

Effects of the distribution in space of permethrin (insecticide)-impregnated bed nets (IIBNS) on child mortality were studied in a randomized controlled trial of IIBNs in a an area highly endemic for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in rural northern Ghana. Eight hundred sixty-two deaths occurred among children 6-59 months of age during 16,841 child-years-at-risk. Mortality increased with the distance from health facilities but not with proximity to identifiable anopheline breeding sites (reservoirs). The efficacy of IIBNs was independent of these distances. Mortality in users of IIBNs was indepe

Eye conditions and blindness in children: priorities for research, programs, and policy with a focus on childhood cataract.

The major causes of blindness in children encompass intrauterine and acquired infectious diseases, teratogens and developmental and molecular genetics, nutritional factors, the consequences of preterm birth, and tumors. A multidisciplinary approach is therefore needed. In terms of the major avoidable causes (i.e., those that can be prevented or treated) the available evidence shows that these vary in importance from country to country, as well as over time. This is because the underlying causes closely reflect socioeconomic development and the social determinants of health, as well as the prov

Talking About the Anti-Trans Sociopolitical Climate with Transgender and Gender Diverse Children and Their Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children and adolescents in the United States are currently experiencing an oppressive sociopolitical climate that is likely impacting their mental wellbeing. TGD children, defined as 5- to 10-year-olds, have the capacity to be aware of the anti-trans sociopolitical climate and, within the context of developmental readiness, TGD children and their caregivers may benefit from having conversations about the sociopolitical climate with a mental health provider. However, there are no clinical guidelines for how mental health providers may approach c

"Anything Can Happen Here": Mother-Child Experiences Navigating Life as Residents of an Urban Red-Light Brothel District in India.

Female sex workers as mothers are disproportionately disadvantaged and experience myriad intersecting vulnerabilities, including poverty, physical and mental health challenges, limited access to health care and health care providers, stigma and discrimination, substance use, and histories of trauma. These risks elevate the potential for negative developmental outcomes for their children. To date, little information exists on the contextual and familial dynamics of female sex workers and their children. Yet, this information is critical for providing effective, evidence-informed interventions.

Under-5 Malaria and Fever Morbidities as Correlates of Anaemia in Niger: A Heteroscedasticity-Consistent Ordered Probit Approach.

Background: The relationship between malaria/other febrile infections and anaemia among under-5 children is a subject of significant policy relevance among African health policy makers. The international significance of addressing anaemia is prominently underscored in the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). This paper therefore analysed the effect of malaria/other febrile infections and other maternal and child's demographic variables on the prevalence of anaemia in Niger. Methods: We utilized the under-5 children's module of the Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) for 2021, which was collect

Differences of sex development and surgical decisions: focus group interviews with health care professionals in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Differences of Sex Development (DSD) are congenital conditions where the chromosomal, gonadal and anatomical sex characteristics do not strictly belong to male or female categories, or that belong to both at the same time. Surgical interventions for individuals with DSD remain controversial, among affected individuals, caregivers, and health-care providers. A lack of evidence in support of, for deferring, or for avoiding surgery complicates the decision-making process. This study explores Norwegian health-care professionals' (HCPs) perspectives on decision-making in DSD-related sur

Linking Psychosocial Stress Events, Psychological Disorders and Childhood Obesity.

There is scientific evidence that supports a strong association between early exposure to stressful life events and the presence of health complications throughout adulthood and, to a lesser extent, in adolescence and childhood. The aim of this study was to examine the accumulation of Psychosocial Stress Events (PSE) and the prevalence of mental disorders in children from 8 to 12 years. The association between these factors and child weight measurements was analysed. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 children classified by weight status (obesity, overweight and normal-weight). Th
