Neuropsychological and clinical findings of Cognitive Remediation Therapy feasibility randomised controlled trial in young people with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Randomised controlled trial (RCT) in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) showed that Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) enhances cognitive flexibility, abstract thinking and quality-of-life. Despite inconsistent findings, CRT has the potential as an adjunct treatment for young people (YP) with AN. A feasibility RCT was conducted in an inpatient setting. The study will also consider the effect of CRT in YP with AN and autistic symptoms. METHODS: Participants were randomly allocated to the Immediate or Delayed condition to receive individual CRT sessions, in addition to standard treat

Sleep-Related Declarative Memory Consolidation in Children and Adolescents with Developmental Dyslexia.

Sleep has a crucial role in memory processes, and maturational changes in sleep electrophysiology are involved in cognitive development. Albeit both sleep and memory alterations have been observed in Developmental Dyslexia (DD), their relation in this population has been scarcely investigated, particularly concerning topographical aspects. The study aimed to compare sleep topography and associated sleep-related declarative memory consolidation in participants with DD and normal readers (NR). Eleven participants with DD and 18 NR (9-14 years old) underwent a whole-night polysomnography. They we

Obsessive compulsive disorder and thought action fusion: Relationships with eating disorder outcomes.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is among the most common psychiatric comorbidities with eating disorders (EDs) and most studies have only examined this relationship at a diagnostic level. More research is needed to determine whether specific symptom domains and cognitive patterns commonly observed in OCD are most salient among individuals with clinically significant EDs, and whether these symptoms appear to change and/or influence treatment outcomes. Thought Action Fusion (TAF) is one cognitive pattern that may underlie OCD-ED comorbidity. The current study assessed 112 adolescent and adul

Bungeanum Improves Cognitive Dysfunction and Neurological Deficits in D-Galactose-Induced Aging Mice via Activating PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 Signaling Pathway.

Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim (Rutaceae), a popular condiment and dietetic herbal medicine, has been used traditionally in the treatment of forgetfulness, as recorded in Shen Nong's Herbal Medicine, an old Chinese medicine book. To explore effects and potential mechanisms of it, extracts of Z. bungeanum through water (WEZ), volatile oil (VOZ), petroleum ether (PEZ), and methylene chloride (MCZ) were used to treat the memory loss induced in D-galactose-induced aging mice. The impaired memory was significantly alleviated after WEZ and VOZ extract treatment. WEZ and VOZ extracts also prevented D-ga

Naringenin protects AlCl3/D-galactose induced neurotoxicity in rat model of AD via attenuation of acetylcholinesterase levels and inhibition of oxidative stress.

Currently prescribed medications for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) that are based on acetylcholinesterase inhibition only offer symptomatic relief but do not provide protection against neurodegeneration. There appear to be an intense need for the development of therapeutic strategies that not only improve brain functions but also prevent neurodegeneration. The oxidative stress is one of the main causative factors of AD. Various antioxidants are being investigated to prevent neurodegeneration in AD. The objective of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of naring

Abrogation of atypical neurogenesis and vascular-derived EphA4 prevents repeated mild TBI-induced learning and memory impairments.

Brain injury resulting from repeated mild traumatic insult is associated with cognitive dysfunction and other chronic co-morbidities. The current study tested the effects of aberrant neurogenesis in a mouse model of repeated mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI). Using Barnes Maze analysis, we found a significant reduction in spatial learning and memory at 24 days post-rmTBI compared to repeated sham (rSham) injury. Cell fate analysis showed a greater number of BrdU-labeled cells which co-expressed Prox-1 in the DG of rmTBI-injured mice which coincided with enhanced cFos expression for neuronal

Prospective associations between childhood social communication processes and adolescent eating disorder symptoms in an epidemiological sample.

Deficits in social cognition and communication, the processes associated with human social behavior and interaction, have been described in individuals with eating disorder psychopathology. The current study examined whether social communication characteristics present in middle childhood (ages 8-14) were associated with eating disorder behaviors, cognitions, and diagnoses across adolescence (ages 14-18) in a large, population-based sample. Participants (N = 4864) were children enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a population-based, prospective study of wo

Interplay between Cocaine, Drug Removal, and Methylphenidate Reversal on Phospholipid Alterations in Drosophila Brain Determined by Imaging Mass Spectrometry.

Cocaine dependence displays a broad impairment in cognitive performance including attention, learning, and memory. To obtain a better understanding of the action of cocaine in the nervous system, and the relation between phospholipids and memory, we have investigated whether phospholipids recover in the brain following cocaine removal using the fly model, Drosophila melanogaster. In addition, the effects of methylphenidate, a substitute medication for cocaine dependence, on fly brain lipids after cocaine abuse are also determined to see if it can rescue the lipid changes caused by cocaine. Lentiviral delivery of human erythropoietin attenuates hippocampal atrophy and improves cognition in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder caused by a trinucleotide (CAG) repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene (HTT). The R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD expresses exon 1 of the human HTT gene with approximately 150 CAG repeats. R6/2 mice develop progressive behavioural abnormalities, impaired neurogenesis, and atrophy of several brain regions. In recent years, erythropoietin (EPO) has been shown to confer neuroprotection and enhance neurogenesis, rendering it a promising molecule to attenuate HD symptoms. In this study, the therapeutic potential of EPO was eval

Graphene oxide improves postoperative cognitive dysfunction by maximally alleviating amyloid beta burden in mice.

Rationale: Graphene oxide (GO) based nanomaterials have shown potential for the diagnosis and treatment of amyloid-β (Aβ)-related diseases, mainly on Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, these nanomaterials have limitations. How GO is beneficial to eliminate Aβ burden, and its physiological function in Aβ-related diseases, still needs to be investigated. Moreover, postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is an Aβ-related common central nervous system complication, however, nanomedicine treatment is lacking. Methods: To evaluate the effects of GO on Aβ levels, HEK293T-APP-GFP and SHSY5Y-APP-GFP

Alterations of Brain Signal Oscillations in Older Individuals with HIV Infection and Parkinson's Disease.

More than 30 years after the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic, HIV patients are now aging due to the advances of antiretroviral therapy. With immunosenescence and the susceptibility of dopamine-rich basal ganglia regions to HIV-related injury, older HIV patients may show neurofunctional deficits similar to patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). We examined the amplitudes of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) across different frequency bands of the BOLD signal in 30 older HIV-infected individuals, 33 older healthy controls, and 36 PD patients. Participants underwent resting-state fMR

Osthole Improves Cognitive Function of Vascular Dementia Rats: Reducing Aβ Deposition via Inhibition NLRP3 Inflammasome.

Vascular dementia (VD) is a common neurodegenerative disease, and the cognitive dysfunction is a major manifestation of VD. Lots of evidences showed that beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and neuroinflammation act as vital elements in the progress of VD. The previous studies showed that osthole (OST) can improve the cognitive function of VD and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effect of OST on Aβ in VD brain is still unclear. Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) of rats were used to investigate the effect of OST on Aβ through nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in this study. Mor

Combination of HIV-1 and Diabetes Enhances Blood Brain Barrier Injury via Effects on Brain Endothelium and Pericytes.

Despite combined antiretroviral therapy (ART) achieving efficient HIV replication control, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) continue to be highly prevalent in HIV-infected patients. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-known comorbidity of HAND in HIV-infected patients. Blood brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction has been linked recently to dementia development, specifically in DM patients. BBB injury exists both in HIV and DM, likely contributing to cognitive decline. However, its extent, exact cellular targets and mechanisms are largely unknown. In this report, we found a decrease in per

The Regulatory Functionality of Exosomes Derived from hUMSCs in 3D Culture for Alzheimer's Disease Therapy.

Reducing amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation could be a potential therapeutic approach for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Particular functional biomolecules in exosomes vested by the microenvironment in which the original cells resided can be transferred to recipient cells to improve pathological conditions. However, there are few reports addressing whether exosomes derived from cells cultured on scaffolds with varying dimension can reduce Aβ deposition or ameliorate cognitive decline for AD therapy. Herein, both 3D graphene scaffold and 2D graphene film are used as the matrix for human umbilical cord mese

Continually Modeling Alzheimer's Disease Progression via Deep Multi-Order Preserving Weight Consolidation.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia. Identifying biomarkers that can track AD at early stages is crucial for therapy to be successful. Many researchers have developed models to predict cognitive impairments by employing valuable longitudinal imaging information along the progression of the disease. However, previous methods model the problem either in the isolated single-task mode or multi-task batch mode, which ignores the fact that the longitudinal data always arrive in a continuous time sequence and, in reality, there are rich types of longitudinal data to apply our

Changes in Empathy Mediate the Effects of Cognitive-Behavioral Group Therapy but Not Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been shown to be associated with difficulty in the ability to vicariously share others' positive emotions (positive affective empathy). Mixed evidence also suggests potentially impaired recognition of the positive and negative emotions of others (cognitive empathy) and impaired or enhanced sharing of the negative emotions of others (negative affective empathy). Therefore, we examined whether two efficacious treatments for SAD, cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), improve empathy in SAD relative to a wait-list

Metformin Therapy Aggravates Neurodegenerative Processes in ApoE-/- Mice.

Epidemiological studies suggest that individuals with diabetes mellitus are at greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. A well-known insulin-sensitizing drug and the most widely prescribed oral medication for diabetes is metformin. There is evidence that metformin acts in a neuroprotective manner via the AMPK/mTOR pathway by inhibiting the tau phosphorylation. In addition, it is known that metformin upregulates Fgf21, which in turn activates the AMPK/mTOR pathway and mediates neuroprotection. Thus, metformin-induced Fgf21 release may be involved in AMPK/mTOR activation. However, some st

5-HIAA as a Potential Biological Marker for Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders.

Neurological and psychiatric disorders occur in about 6 percent of the global population indicating a significant amount of people suffering from neurological disorder on a varying range in day to day life. On an extensive view, there is a critical requirement for the development of an alternative biomarker for these conditions. The thwart found in developing a biomarker is the difficulty in identifying a serum biomarker as these are mostly limited to the central nervous system (CNS). Serotonin being a neurotransmitter synthesized in the raphe nuclei of the brain could serve as an alternative

Sialic Acid and Sialylated Oligosaccharide Supplementation during Lactation Improves Learning and Memory in Rats.

Sialic acids (Sia) are postulated to improve cognitive abilities. This study evaluated Sia effects on rat behavior when administered in a free form as N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) or conjugated as 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL). Rat milk contains Sia, which peaks at Postnatal Day 9 and drops to a minimum by Day 15. To bypass this Sia peak, a cohort of foster mothers was used to raise the experimental pups. A group of pups received a daily oral supplementation of Neu5Ac to mimic the amount naturally present in rat milk, and another group received the same molar amount of Sia as 6'-SL. The control
