Pulmonary metastasectomy in colorectal cancer patients with previously resected liver metastasis: pooled analysis.

BACKGROUND: Data addressing the outcomes and patterns of recurrence after pulmonary metastasectomy (PM) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and previously resected liver metastasis are limited. METHODS: We searched the PubMed database for studies assessing PM in CRC and gathered individual data for patients who had PM and a previous curative liver resection. The influence of potential factors on overall survival (OS) was analyzed through univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Between 1983 and 2009, 146 patients from five studies underwent PM and had previous liver resection. The

Cost of care for elderly cancer patients in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Timely estimates of the costs of care for cancer patients are an important element in the formulation of national cancer programs and policies. We estimated net costs of care for elderly cancer patients in the United States for the 18 most prevalent cancers and for all other tumor sites combined. METHODS: We used Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare files to identify 718,907 cancer patients and 1,623,651 noncancer control subjects. Within each tumor site, noncancer control subjects were matched to patients by sex, age group, geographic location, and phase of care (

Sonographically guided radio frequency thermal ablation for unresectable recurrent tumors in the retroperitoneum and the pelvis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of sonographically guided radio frequency thermal ablation as a minimally invasive method for treatment of unresectable recurrent or metastatic tumors in the retroperitoneum and the pelvis, which often pose difficult surgical problems. METHODS: Radio frequency thermal ablation was performed on 7 patients with unresectable recurrent retroperitoneal or pelvic tumors from colorectal (n = 4), renal (n = 2), and prostate (n = 1) cancers. Under sonographic guidance, a total of 11 radio frequency thermal ablation operations were performed by a percutaneous or t

Comorbidity patterns and their associations with performance status and treatment receipt in breast and colorectal cancers in a multiethnic Asian setting: a latent class analysis.

PURPOSE: Comorbidity is usually summarised as a count or index, which treats different combinations of conditions equally. Whether distinct comorbidity patterns have different implications for management decisions in cancer is unclear. We applied latent class analysis (LCA) to identify comorbidity patterns and examined their associations with performance status and cancer treatment in individuals with breast or colorectal cancer. METHODS: Data from two Malaysian cohorts comprising adults with breast or colorectal cancer were analysed. Comorbidities, verified against medical records, were grou

Metastasis-Specific Biomarker SPP1 and its Characterization in Colorectal Cancer with HIV Infection.

INTRODUCTION: Secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) is upregulated in cancers, but its role in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) and expression in HIV-associated CRC remain unclear. METHODS: Transcriptomic data from the GEO and TCGA databases were analyzed. Metastasisspecific genes were identified. SPP1-associated functions were explored using GO enrichment, KEGG pathway analysis, and GSVA. Prognostic value was assessed. SPP1 expression was evaluated in 30 CRC specimens (15 HIV-positive, 15 HIV-negative) via immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: SPP1 exhibited a metastasis-specific expression pattern.

Novel nomogram based on preoperative inflammatory indicators and postoperative clinicopathological features for predicting metachronous liver metastasis of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of metachronous liver metastasis (MLM) after primary resection of colorectal cancer (CRC) significantly worsens patient prognosis. Identification of patients at high risk of MLM would enable closer monitoring and more timely intervention. We therefore aimed to develop and validate a novel nomogram to predict MLM in patients with CRC, based on preoperative inflammatory indicators and postoperative clinicopathological features. METHODS: Data from 505 patients with CRC who underwent radical resection of the primary tumor at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou Un

Simultaneous dual-Raman-shift scanning-free stimulated Raman scattering microscopy for label-free biomolecular imaging.

Conventional stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy requires time-consuming Raman-shift scanning to achieve chemical specificity, limiting its application in real-time biological studies. We present simultaneous dual-Raman-shift scanning-free SRS (SDRSRS) microscopy, which captures different distinct molecular vibrational signatures simultaneously without spectral scanning, achieving more than 10-fold faster imaging while maintaining high chemical specificity. The system uses birefringent crystals to create controlled optical path differences and orthogonal polarizations, enabling dual-p

Impact of time to ablation on survival outcomes in patients with colorectal liver metastases: an inverse probability-weighted cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing for thermal ablation (TA) in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) eligible for local curative therapy remains undefined. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of time to ablation (TTA) on long-term survival outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 220 patients with ablatable CRLM (≤ 5 liver metastases, maximum diameter ≤ 3 cm) who underwent TA between January 2015 and December 2022. Based on the TTA, patients were stratified into three groups: upfront TA (UTA, ≤ 3 months, n = 113), short-term delayed TA (DTA, 3-6 months, n = 59), and long‑ter

Physical activity patterns after diagnosis and survival of prognostic colorectal cancer subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is associated with improved overall survival (OS) among colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, but research on PA changes after diagnosis remains limited. This study examines associations between OS and changes in PA from CRC diagnosis onward, across stage- and treatment-related subgroups. METHODS: Data were analyzed from patients in two large CRC cohorts (PLCRC and COLON) enrolled between August 2010 and December 2022 (follow-up until February 1st, 2024). This included 3395 stage I-IIA patients who underwent surgery only, 2406 stage IIB/C-III patients who receiv

Cancer stem cell-driven drug resistance in colorectal carcinoma: molecular aspects and therapeutic potentials.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a major global health burden, with therapeutic resistance accounting for the majority of treatment failures and cancer-related deaths. Cancer stem cells (CSCs), which possess intrinsic drug tolerance and self-renewal capacity, drive both primary and acquired resistance. CSCs maintain drug tolerance through the activation of core signaling cascades, including Wnt/β-catenin, Notch, Hedgehog, PI3K/Akt, and MAPK/ERK pathways, as well as through epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), enhanced DNA repair, and PD-1/PD-L1-mediated immune evasion. These molecular alter

Long-term outcomes following a pathological complete response at the primary tumor site after preoperative therapy in metastatic colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: A pathological complete response (pCR) following neoadjuvant chemoradiation (CRT) is associated with a favorable prognosis in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) often receive systemic therapy, and some patients undergo primary tumor resection after preoperative therapy. However, whether oncological outcomes remain favorable in patients with mCRC and pCR in the primary tumor site (ypT0N0M1) following preoperative therapy is unknown. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with mCRC who underwent preoperative therapy followed by pr

Construction and validation of a prognostic model for 1 year all-cause mortality risk in patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases after HIFU treatment.

PURPOSE: Colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM) worsen the prognosis of patients. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive treatment for CRLM, but reliable prognostic tools for HIFU patients are lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram to predict the risk of 1-year all-cause mortality (ACM) in patients with CRLM receiving HIFU. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients with CRLM who received HIFU between January 2014 and December 2023 at two medical centers. Data from Chongqing Medical University's Second Affiliated Hospital were used

Early-onset cancer and modifiable risk: quantifying the combined impact of excess body weight and alcohol on breast and colorectal cancer in Italy (18-34 years).

BACKGROUND: Rising rates of cancers diagnosed before the age of 50 have been reported worldwide, including in Italy. Among modifiable risk factors, excess body weight (overweight and obesity) and alcohol consumption independently and synergistically increase the risk of breast and colorectal cancers, including early-onset disease. However, the population-level burden attributable to these exposures among adolescents and young adults (AYA) remains poorly quantified. METHODS: We combined a targeted overview of the literature with a quantitative Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) analysis to
