Recent epidemics of human listeriosis have shown the importance of Listeria monocytogenes as a food-borne risk. We have developed an automated identification assay for L. monocytogenes using the specificity of the 16S rDNA probe described by Wang et al. (1991). A morphological and morphometric comparison was made of a Babesia ovis strain isolated in Extremadura (Spain) and a B. ovis strain from Turkey. Strains were morphologically similar, with a clear predominance of single sub-spherical or anaplasmoid forms. A double blind cross-over study of eight patients with familial hypokalaemic periodic paralysis was made to assess the influence of acetazolamide on muscle strength.
